*NOTE* Shortbows are “simple weapons” so rogues do get access to some bows without having to choose the elven race. Useful tips for backgrounds in Solasta :
a) Lowlife gives you proficiency in **Thieves Tools,** so you can skip having a Rogue in your party.
b) Sellsword gives access to **Medium armor** (in core D&D, only the Mountain/Shield Dwarves gives that proficiency). Very useful for Wizards notably! You can wear Medium armor as an arcane caster without penalties in D&D, but only if you are proficient!
c) Lawkeeper is proficient in **Martial Weapons** !
It is up to you though to see if you like the concept / role-play of being a Lowlife Ranger for example or Sellsword Wizard.

Bear in mind that a wizard with proficiency in medium armour (due to Sellsword background) does not have proficiency in light armour.

Thanks for this very informative video. I started my first playthrough with random characters just to get a feel of the game for a few hours. Now that I want to play the full campaign "seriously", this is going to be very usefull to create my new party :)

I usually put something as an odd number if there is a feat that I’m getting that increases that score
So what it looks like to me is, Solasta is the game setting, Crown of the Magister is the campaign. So a number of skills and languages are not used in this Campaign, but they might be used in other Campaigns they release down the road, and they might be higher level so, you might use the same party for that one. You can create characters from the main menu under Characters option, you can also level the up, 10 is the max, how ever you can not use them for the base campaign. You can download and play other peoples maps and adventures that have been made with the Dungeon Maker. Dungeon Maker is in Beta.
I mean maybe I’d need the edge in a difficult game like this. (I haven’t played it yet) but I find it really fun to play dnd with characters that don’t have a good race/class synergy. Let’s me be more creative when I write my backstory.
An excellent guide, Wolf. And I'm not just blowing smoke up your ass, as I am a "never-smoker. (BTW, I believe characters who smoke cigars or pipes should receive temporary hits to their CON due to the ill health effects. Unless it is wacky magical tobacky. LOL)
I have played D&D since 2e (one of my groups still uses 2e: accursed THAC0!!) so I understand most of the concepts you cover. My compliment to you is how effectively you explain these concepts without talking down to the listener. That is an impressive skill to have, and reflects a kind and empathetic nature.
I received my email from Solasta Kickstarter this past week and will be downloading the game and other digital content tonight. With my work schedule lightening up by the end of June (no more 5-hour drives and working 8 or 11 hours days up to 12 days per stretch), I'll be able to dive into Solasta much more starting July. Keep the videos and game streaming flowing (I thing you said the YT streams are archieved on the Discord) and I'll be playing along with ya!! Skaal, Wolf!!

You know what would be a cool thing for this game? Being able to load in other players characters. Have a list of other player creations and be able to add to party

Great vid! I'm familiar with 5e, but not this game. Although, I have been cruising the YT for videos on it.
I just picked up the game (Steam has it for 50% off) and it's downloading now.
I'm stoked to play a 5e video game, even if it's missing a lot of options ATM. I hope this dev keeps releasing DLC with more classes/races! They just put out one that adds Druid, Barbarian and half Orc. Hopefully we get another with Bard, Warlock, and Tiefling (or a similar CHA/INT race that fits the setting).

One question: Do the personality flags have any negative influence if I, for example, have a really "good" and a really "evil" character in my party? Probably not. I am asking, because in some games (if I recall it correctly, BG1 for example) characters leave your party if they are unhappy with your actions.
Thanks! The personality flags seem to be more so for added flare. They will not cause a party member to leave.

Question for you Wolf :
Is the the type of DND game that you absolutely need a cleric for healing and/or a rogue for traps?
I played some other DND games and I really felt my hands were tied as it was almost impossible to progress without a dedicated healer and a trapper.

Paladins and rangers can hea but you’ll probably want a cleric, you don’t need a dedicated rogue. My ranger takes care of all the traps and locked chests he has low life background and the fear that doubles your thieves tool proficiency and he’s never failed a roll and still is an absolute powerhouse in combat. I think he’s got more kills than any other character I have, though my cleric is rapidly closing the gap now he can cast spirit guardians
Oh also you can brew your own potions and you can ad insisted those potions to other characters so any character can be a healer quite effectively but you’ll probably want a cleric, they are bad ass, but they don’t have to be a dedicated healer

So is the only way for rogue to get bow profiency by being an elf?
no all rogues can use shortbows and light Crossbows. I believe you can get longbow proficiency from the sellsword background but don't quote me on that.
Yea the shortbow is a “simple weapon,” so they get access to that. I should have mentioned this in the video.
The things that are marked as "not in use" is because they wont be used on the main plot, but if more campaigns are added later as DLC or by player content they can be used then as they are already implemented.

When you make your team should you make a tank, a healer and 2 dps or does it not matter in this game?
There's many ways to make things work, but it never hurts to have a tank and a healer.
So I was researching this video to find the difference between "dungeoneers pack" and "Explorers pack" at 8:25 and it seemed like you didn't really know what the differences were. Or do they not matter a whole lot? Genuinely trying to find answers hopefully I didn't come off like a ****
Yes the differences are in what you get for items / the amount of items offered.
Question: when going for a "Green mage" will the ranger skills modify by int or wis?

@@WolfheartFPS Thanks Wolf :D I messed up in BG3 and made a elf cleric with a racial cantrip. For some reson I assumed it it would use Wis as modifier and picked Fire Bolt :p Played the character way to long before i figured out that was a bad idea.
Does solasta have lots of cool monsters ? Is there a level cap? When i get this game think im gonna a make an all little person party
The campaign goes to level 10. The monsters are all home brew.
What are folks impression of the green mage? Does it make sense not to roll a Ranger for a green mage?
Haven't made a green mage yet but I would say that as a green mage you are going to be much more like an actual druid. You will be a more all around nature spellcaster than a ranger. As a ranger you won't have nearly as many spells / spell slots.
greenmage casts your travel food, goodberries, so your team collects all the food in your inventory. essential in my 3 mage, single pali party. Thier bow also casts entangle on a hit.

I finished the game yesterday. And although i loved it. The game gets riddiculously easy the second you get fireball.... Had a ranger,cleric,paladin,wizard setupp, with all except the ranger having fireball..... The ranger was primarily there for single target boss sniping and lockpicking lol.
The hardest parts of solasta is the beginning of the game. When you get access to tier 3 spellcasting it gets increadibly easy. Just remember to get counterspell on all you wizards. I stopped buffing entirely after the first parts of the game, was no point as fireball ends all the fights increadibly fast. And ranger for killing the bosses works really well, just use the insanely powerfull poison arrows, and craft the fancy bow with radiant damage. Combat lasted max 3 rounds at this point for me, and 2 off thoose rounds where just the boss, non boss fights lasted 1 round... Most with boss lasted 2.
As for the dice, i always just roll untill i get 1 18. For me it is more fun that the primary stat is actually good. Also ranger dont really need wisdom. No offensive spells.
Which cleric domain did you go with and which ranger favored enemy did you picked?
@@abellius66 the one with fireball. Think its light? I dont remember i Just went for anything with fireball. As for the ranger undead and dragons.

Hey who are you doing pretty good with your videos I'm pretty happy yeah I've been watching your videos what's in a blue moon I popped in when you're not when you're not knowing that I'm there but I am there I always give you I'll try to get a thumbs up when I can when I'm not tired you know me I've been playing with your game The Witcher today I beat the wild Hunt yesterday with the store that I have from Merlin man it went through like a butter I was pretty upset I was pretty sad going through the wild Hunt because I thought I at least get some armor set it in your video either so it's the same thing of mine in the video game all I got was swords out of it I saw him the videos that you can get that type of arm said but maybe it's just mods maybe somebody just put that stuff in there I don't have a computer to do something like that I don't know about computers anyway so I can even do it if I wanted to that's a damn shame right well I got the woman God woke her up got the black horse didn't take the coin from the King got the witch's daughter with me she's with Siri and all them in a nail place North Carolina I left them there to go back home to see the black horse that I that I got for free a lot better than what roaches roach roach was a brown horse didn't match the color scheme of the armor this this was had this was 10 times better because it's all black he has long legs and a run fast Rosalinda the roach always leaned on the side every time you'd always have some heavy stuff on him didn't like that too much I picked up a lot of armor sets and stuff like that but I can't even match the clothes up and the swords I put them in the treasure chest I've been doing pretty good but I did not win the last trophy that I want the secret cards that I'm dying to get I think I'm supposed to get 22 in a deck I have to find them to be a tournament and I don't know nothing about Quinn trying to get 22 cards and we're at the practice to figure out how to beat a tournament to get the trophy that I want so I can put in the witch's House which is house looks pretty nice really wants you to pay for the deck it all out looks pretty nice hope I didn't say nothing bad that word if I did I am sorry I was just trying to say the nice way they all be doing good on your video games and your videos you know I think you're a great host and you're saying it real good and I could tell sir you you know what you're doing I have no doubt in my mind about you are better than anybody else I see on CZcams when it comes to video games in the content and how you say the story and what the game is all about I wish somebody could learn this from you please CZcams people have a Time don't know what they're doing you're the only one I feel that you do know what you're doing and you I like it every better I am so glad that I am subscribed to your show you're doing a good job 100%. Yup, the Paladins spellcasting ability is charisma.

I made a Dwarf Paladin with 16 Charisma, a Dwarf Wizard with 16 Intelligence, etc. This is not BG3: you can fully customize your Ability Scores beyond racial defaults. You do not need need to make an optimal race/class combo (you never do, but in Solasta you can even make sure it does not make your party too weak). I actually used the standard Buy-Points, but allowed a 16 even if that race would normally be 15, similar to what is suggested in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (though I did not go as far).
I hear you at 3:15. :P I generally hate the idea of choosing a race depending on class optimization, but yes it sucks to be a Wizard with 15 Intelligence at start (my Dwarf Wizard in tabletop and Drow Wizard in BG3). Solasta allows you to tweak that freely.
Example : in Kingmaker Pathfinder, I played a Halfling Barbarian. A Dexterity based Barbarian is not the cheapest or easiest to roll with, but you can still win the game.
On the other hand, you are correct that you cannot use Martial weapons in some race-class combo. Your Rogue can use a *Short Bow.* Some feats (so level 4) give you access to some weapons (crossbows, longbow, longsword, warhammer).
This is true overall and I do wish I talked a bit more about this! However I feel for a beginner's guide its probably best for new players to get a stat boost in their primary ability score. Your dwarf paladin had a 16, but it could have been an 18 (and then a 20 at level 8) with the choice of a half-elf. For you not a big deal, but for a noob, that extra +1 / +2 modifier might be the saving grace! This game is quite hard imo on its standard settings with nothing turned off. With that said, I do wish I elaborated a bit more on the points you made.

I thought it would be challenging to forgo Ranger and Cleric and play the other four pre-rolled characters. It certainly is "interesting". The Fighter and Paladin are unable to hit anything but their armor does soak up the damage and the Rogue and Wizard more than make up for it by one-shotting everything. Still at low levels, hope it continues like this.
I honestly didn't look at this too much just made a lotr party 😂 (gandalf, aragorn, legolas and gimli)

well go japanese rpg , because Euro HIGH fantasy had elves and fae backgrounds thus magical.
Gnomes, Emberkin Aasimar, various Tiefling bloodlines etc., etc. Oviously, Solasta doesn't offer any of these races, but there _are_ games that do. If you really want that racial boost from heritage.
Anyway, if Int+1 is what stops you from picking other race and do RP that will express _your_ playstyle, what is left from RPG then?..

I think instead of infinite re rolls you should get 3 rolls, and then choose which one you want to use. Pointbuy is my preferred method for tabletop.

Umm. Question, not sure how this game works, but in 5e Shortbow and light crossbow are both simple ranged weapons.

It's a role playing game what is the fun in min/maxing
it's party based role playing game. The key word is "party." With a party of 4 you should have characters that can handle all areas of roleplaying. You don't need 4 jack of all trades characters.

Character creation is NOT important in this game. I just made 4 rangers and killed everything with bows from distance.
Welcome to the 5th edition.
Best comp is cleric with fireball, 2x wizard (again for fireball) and 1 ranger. You basically kill every encounter round 1.
