    Note that many of the more “hardcore” mechanics can be turned on and off, such as the spell components. I will be live tonight and tomorrow at 6PM EST on this channel (not twitch). Stop in for some Solasta fun.

      I think its worth mentioning that some of the more "hardcore" mechanics like spell components etc... can actually be turned down or off in the custom difficulty menu. I would say that game becomes very accessible at that point

    This game, from a gaming and D&D direction is just absurdly GOOD. Its limitations in graphics/characters I find falls to the wayside as the gameplay eclipses it. Highly recommended !

      If they add multiplayer in the future for a more pen & paper type experience I would literally call it the perfect game. Like bordering better than BG....I've never said that before and it hurts my emotions to type it, but my God is it true.

    • @andreaso8886
      @andreaso8886 Před 3 lety +4

      I disagree. Solasta concentrates ONLY on the D&D 5 combat rules. Nothing else. None of the established races, no known worlds (which is not necessarily a bad thing) and very little of D&D classes. No multiclasses at all.
      I can't understand why everyone is so on fire with this.
      Everybody says BG3 is not on spot with the D&D rules. I say it's at least as rule confirm as Solasta and from am rpg standpoint even more. Or Pathfinder. Or Pillars of Eternity.
      Or the old SSI games. Those were at least on par with the rules at that time as Solasta.
      Don't get me wrong: Solasta is a fine game and I played the Early Access to excess, but for an pnp rpg player this is not 'a wet dream'. It is NOT better than those other games. In my opinion.

    • @GryphonDes
      @GryphonDes Před 3 lety +3

      @@andreaso8886 Hardly surprising since they have just the D&D SRD to work from rules wise -- that said, their own world is intriguing and they are already expanding things even more, on their own.

      @@GryphonDes You misunderstood me. I'm not knocking the game or the game world. I'm annoyed by the non-pnp fans telling us that this is the best adaptation of the D&D5 rules. IT IS NOT. Nuffield said😉

    • @justmonica9253
      @justmonica9253 Před 2 lety

      @@andreaso8886 As a pnp fan I say right now it is the best adaptation of 5e rules. BG3 had a number of small things that change the texture of the game. Cantrips producing damage floors, Special weapon attacks, toggle reactions instead of on-trigger reactions, advantage when shooting from altitude, advantage when flanking, bonus action potions, combustable grease spell (I think, not sure on that one), turn blending if initiatives align. Solasta has some things like this, I believe it also has bonus action potions, but not as many.
      Combine this with grid-based combat, as most people play in pnp, and it feels much more like playing pnp to me.
      And sure, not as many races and official subclasses. I do wish there was multiclassing as well. But the subclasses they made for this are fun and interesting in and of themselves, and there *are* more of them then bg3 has implemented yet. Plenty to play around with.
      BG3 is a much better rpg, what with the actual characters and good plot and all, but for the specific argument of emulating the ruleset I do think solasta is superior.

    Good review, buddy.
    I really like what they’ve done here. With a team of 15-20 people, you’re limited in how ambitious you can be. Looks like they’ve said “let’s get the game mechanics right and the rest will take care of itself”, which is absolutely the right attitude. Even if graphics, writing, characters, story, lore, world-building etc are somewhat mediocre, we’ve still got a really interesting and unique game.

      I actually laugh often during the pretty fugly cut scenes. The attitude of all parties involved, during dialog, is kind of like an odd holiday/cringy hanging out with the in-laws type thing.
      You may not really want to listen to them or be around them (in order to get back to the sweet, SWEET combat), but it ends up always being entertaining for the right or wrong reasons.
      The battles are absolutely exhillerating. Wolfie was spot on pointing towards (I may be reaching) how no fight truly felt unwinnable, but you must use your head and switch strategies on the fly at all times.
      I've had a number of battles where keeping a level head when one of my guys fell out early, due to shit planning/laziness, turns out ok. This was mostly due to having a clear understanding of what my adventurers can do, and oddly believing in them doing their damn job.
      What a bang-up job by Tactical Adventures on a barely 300k budget.
      Someone give these guys more money! Bravo!

  • @ZakEmber
    @ZakEmber Před 3 lety +4

    I bought the game last year in Early Access and played through the Betas; I don't think people give Tactical Adventures enough credit for just how much they accomplished! I think Solasta is THE BEST D&D primer I've ever played in video game form, and as an introduction to D&D mechanics/team synergy/combat, I think it did some things better than Baldur's Gate. For instance, I've actually been hoping Larian takes the Smite mechanic from Solasta for the BG 3 Paladins; I thought it was simple and beautiful how TA's system elevates a hit into a Smite in Solasta. I think Larian actually did take some cues about upcasting spells from Solasta, which was a good move. I hope in the future, Tactical Adventures is able to borrow a few things BG as well.
    For me though, the UI in Solasta is a huge selling point. It's really, really good. It makes it so easy to see and know what my action options are, what spells I have, how many slots left, how to upcast, and more. I love BG 3, but I really don't like their UI, where I feel I have to micro-manage everything and the game is set up to automatically wreck it unless I remember to turn certain options off in the menus. Solasta made everything pretty easy, and I think that helps a lot in making the battles more fun! The little touches make a huge difference, too: firing a shot from a distance and seeing a green 'plus' on your icon letting you know you have advantage on the shot, or the red 'minus' for disadvantage. For such a small team, I like that they picked their battles: even if they couldn't have a big-budget story and voice acting, they COULD make the UI and battle systems fairly polished.
    I think BG 3 opens up a lot more out-of-the-box thinking and options due to Larian's game engine and their previous work in Divinity: Original Sin/II, which is fantastic. Solasta has a lot of charm though with their grid-based combat: it felt cleaner and more intuitive.
    It's definitely not winning any awards graphically or in the story, but I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who loves D&D, or anyone who wanted to try D&D. I think BG 3 allows players to live out some of the crazier, outside-the-box thinking aspects of D&D, but I think Solasta works better as a foundational game that teaches how things work.

    Found this game on Xbox game pass on PC, and I'm so glad I did. I have been looking for a D&D experience with dice rolls and the same process of playing irl, with character creation also relying on dice rolls and not sliders or detailed points allocation. @San Cho There can be room for both. As someone who is big into tabletop, real time with pause never felt like D&D and as such, I never thought of the BG games as D&D. BG3 feels the most like D&D to me because turn based combat is how it works at the table.

    They added side quests and made it possible to explore more out of the linear main quest.
    There are tons of options to change the more pure rules for spell components/focus, travel rations, etc. Really a lot of options, that you can change at any point in-game, to adapt it to your preferences, make it easier or harder. In my opinion, the best is to play with the default rules and difficulty (or whatever is closest to the tabletop 5e rules).

  • @Peoples_Republic_of_Cotati

    They need to add a finished game mode, which allows for wandering about after the main story is done; having NPCs recognize them the effort etc. RIght now the game simply ends.
    I would also like for more diverse conversation options...feels almost like Falout 4 atm. This could be done by opening up alignment defying choices, leaving one's aligned default as ...the default. There should be consequences to repeatedly chosing against the default aligned options.
    It would probably be too much to ask for multiple endings for this iteration....but it would be nice.

    I love this game I can’t wait for tomorrow. I have played through the early content many times and think this is the most genuine dungeons and dragons experience in a video game I’ve ever played through. Worth mentioning is the dungeon construction kit they give for free with the game. I have yet to even explore that and I know some people have created some cool dungeons already.

    I look at it as an isometric version of the old school first-person dungeon crawlers; all about the action, story and characters are secondary. This game matched that expectation and even exceeded it in some ways. I hope they have a bigger budget for their next game.

    Largely ignored this game because its single player and just waiting for BG3 to get more content. But man were you right for recommending it.
    The combat and rests feel like real DnD with the feeling of doom when youre three combats into a dungeon, out of spells, hit dice and health and dont know if its worth it to go back or search for a long resting point.
    Heard people hating. On the story... Its not bad... Basic collect all the Mcguffins. Graphics are a bit rough on the characters up close but the game looks great from above.
    They did xyz access unlike larian which i think is lazy of larian. Pretty cool to have your Paladin flying around pissing off the horde of undead. Also while BG3 will prob eventually have higher level spells, solasta already does. Have beat a combat with a bunc of spiders mostly killing themselves running into a wall of fire. And twin spelling banishment as you take away two bruisers elementals is just wonderful.
    Highly recommend this game. Its currently 35% off but idk for how long. And Nov 4th it gets a big update adding Druid and Barbarian to the current playable list of Fighter, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Cleric, and Wizard. Plus a lot more added :)
    Negative is it is single player, but tbh I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed a single player game so much.

      It's a known problem if you want to research it on the bug reporting forums. The game doesn't crash sometimes when it encounters a fatal bug and the player is allowed to continue playing on, compounding more and more fatal errors and when the game is saved - it's too corrupted to be usable again. What I don't understand is how this bug also corrupts all my past saves including ones that were made BEFORE I encountered the fatal bugging areas. It corrupted EVERY save game I had - and for those of you following this issue - all of this fatal savegame corruption happened AFTER the Spring Update.

    This looks really good but I hafta admit - I'm kinda itching for a new cRPG with a comprehensive toolset to create custom modules for use on dedicated, persistent servers. NWN at this point is really showing its age and despite it still having an active community it has been dying the slow death of neglect for over a decade. For a game with mostly forgettable campaigns I can barely remember any details from it probably is the single most impactful game I have ever played in terms of personal social and intellectual development purely due to the sheer amount of depth in player interaction and character immersion. Without it I doubt English would've become my primary language over my native language.
