  • Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a faithful adaptation of the D&D 5e Ruleset that is great for both new players and old-timers. I had a good time playing the game, but there are some major flaws to talk about.

    Wizards wouldn't fully license this, but they tossed the keys to Dark Alliance. They rolled a 1 on that Insight check.

    As a veteran D&D player and CRPG player, this is a great game. Truly gives me Temple of Elemental Evil vibes. As TOEE was the first 3.5 ruleset game it hit it out of the park (except for the glaring bugs that were often game-breaking--download the TOEE free community patch if you play it). Solasta feels like playing D&D at the table, but solo. Solasta feels great when your rolls are on, and feels horrible when your characters cant roll above 5. Instead of throwing dice, you want to throw your mouse. But the tension of the give and take of the dice gods only added to the gameplay for me, as in D&D it's smart play and tactics that win the day not luck or super-strong characters. I really love not having a "main" character and seeing each character contribute their own part of a conversation, like real tabletop gaming. I do wish inventory management was a bit better as crafting is the best way to get good gear and you will fill up quickly with components. This game is ripe for a drop in second campaign as DLC. Also, Vulkan didn't mention but it's available free on XBOX gamespass if you have that service.

    Haven't played myself, but I don't think the lack of multiplayer is inherently a negative. I think the goal here was just to make a tactical RPG that uses DnD rules in combat. As a tactical RPG I don't think it requires multiplayer. If they were really trying to replicate a DnD type roleplaying experience moreso than the combat, then I would hold it against it more.

      Keep in mind it's a small development team with limited resources, they couldn't even make characters go over level 10 because it would have required a great deal of work with re-tuning encounters to take into account the party's power increase. I feel multiplayer is just something out of the scope of what they can accomplish with what they have available. I'm sure they would have loved to add it in if they were able to.

    • @28OntheRise
      @28OntheRise Pƙed 2 lety

      @@Jasta85 I was defending the lack of multiplayer here, because Vulkan seemed to judge it based on that. But I will say the small dev team argument wouldn't hold up for me if I thought this was a game that needed multiplayer. If they were lacking something pivotal, it would seem like they should've gone in a different direction entirely. I just don't think that multiplayer was necessary her, so I wouldn't hold it against them.

      also arent most crpg's singleplayer? (genuinely asking) ive just recently within the past year played divinity 2, baldurs gate 3, Pillars of eternity 2, Pathfinder WotR (thoroughly enjoying each of them, for different reasons, but love them all, haven't beat any yet) 3/4 are large companies, and i think multiplayer is only available in baldurs gate and divinity. i dont think it's a main focus when making these games it seems to be an extra thing they add if they have the resources , I'm sure people would like it ofc, but for people like me who enjoys solo games more than multiplayer( i like going at my own pace and not having people depend on me, less stress for me personally) diving into these games for hours and hours solo is thoroughly enjoying and i don't think playing actual DnD alone is comparable to playing these games alone.
      also this game is on game pass for pc if anyone wants to try it and has game pass. the character creation is super in depth not quite pathfinder levels but pretty close imo

      @28OntheRise Pƙed 2 lety

      @@dopeywednesday7590 Yeah, I would say most are or a least are equally viable on single player. I think Vulkan only mentioned it as a negative here because this was pulling from DnD mechanics, so he believed the lack of multiplayer hindered the experience more. I agree with everything you said though

      @@pleco101 Hard to say. They just finished sorc class. Game is OK as it is right now for release. I can imagine adding some more quests into existing locations, but DLC is also perfectly possible.

    Solasta is a good game that teeters on the edge of being great, but it's unlikely to ever reach those heights because Tactical Adventures (the developer) lacks the resources to let the game to breathe as deeply as it wants.

    This looks interesting. I’ve been in a tabletop campaign for nearly the past year and I do really like Baldur’s Gate/Pillars of Eternity style games. I’ve read this has some issues but I’ll certainly have to look into this one. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention.

    My take on difficulty levels:
    Easy mode: you’re fighting children
    Sorta easy mode: you’re fighting pre-teens
    Normal mode: you’re fighting adults
    Hard mode: you’re a pre-teen fighting adults
    Super hard mode: your a child fighting adults
    My biggest reason for not doing the super difficult modes is that your party looks kick ass but essentially become inept compared to the opposition.
    If you’re going to play the super difficult mode, the mobs should be even more frightening and your party should essentially be kids with foam weapons and cardboard armor.

    Are spells reset after combat? or it has that bullshit mechanic of making your character "rest" to be able to cast spells again ? god I hate that.

    • @matsimoto3541
      @matsimoto3541 Pƙed 2 lety +2

      you have a few spells you can always cast, the other ones use a spell slot for every cast
      and yes, you need to rest to get back your slots, but you can do a short rest anytime when not in combat, twice before you need to do a long rest at a campfire
      i like this mechanic, a wizard has a shit ton of spells at the start and this forces you to think more tactical and not to spam your powerful spells
      otherwise a group of 4 wizards would be overpowered as hell

    • @peaceprinceshaxi5978
      @peaceprinceshaxi5978 Pƙed 2 lety

      @@matsimoto3541 yup, what he said, the mechanic is perfect for pnp gameplay, and this is it but on computer, computer rpg
      Crpg
      If you don’t like that system, it doesn’t make it bullshit. There are games like pillars of eternity if you want that, no one is forcing you to like something you don’t.
      My perspective would be that I actually prefer it when i need to rest, because again, in PoE - I would just cast the same stuff again and again, especially in the PoE2:Deadfire. So this makes every cast be more thoughtful instead of spamming psy cipher powers all the time

    • @felicemastronzo8827
      @felicemastronzo8827 Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Total spell reset after every fight without resources economy? No thanks, this is a deeper and tactical game, not some bullshit modern jrpg
