Solasta: Crown of the Magister Review. A Good DnD Game

  • Welcome to my Solasta: Crown of the Magister review! Solasta is a quirky little role playing game based quite accurately on Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) 5th Edition rules. Combining story-telling, exploration, questing, looting and a large amount of bashing monsters in turn-based tactical combat, it certainly feels like a true DnD experience. But is that what you really want? Is Solasta: Crown of the Magister worth it? I thought so, but only if you like DnD. Watch the video, then let me know!

    Despite its flaws, I really enjoyed the game and look forward to the sequel! How about you?

      Same Same. I am hoping a sequel or even community made dungeons will add to the appeal and longevity of the game. A little bit like the original Neverwinter Nights.

      @@michaelengelby732 I guess the next big DnD game will be the release of Baldurs Gate 3. I quite enjoyed the first phase of the early access, but I'm waiting for the full release before getting back to that so I can enjoy the finished story.

    I stumbled to this game while watching some BG3 stream in the background. Someone in comments asked "Isn't it reminds you of Solasta CotM". I've got interested. Playing it now on Cataclysm Mode with same party as you : wizard, cleric, paladin, rogue (to go on in high level DLC). Definetely will create a new party for another DLC (low level one) with added classes. Really like this game (not big of a gamer, hour a day when I have it), but I think combat system is legit, flaws in graphics and sound I've glanced over with ease - it's not a AAA game like you said. Just fun (and challenging on higher difficulties) adventure. Love it.

      Glad you're enjoying it. The main game is definitely stronger than the expansion adventures, but they are ok still. If you enjoy these sort of games the Divinity: Original Sin series are both excellent and worth a look.

    Good review. Yeah, Baldur's Gate III has better acting for a freaking magpie bird than a lot of this, but it's not that big of a deal.

      Lol thats true. The bluebird-looking thing in the Druid's grove, right? I was in two minds about stealing its key but bottled out in case I upset the Druids. I tend to upset a lot of people by helping myself to their things :D

    It's actually not at all predictable... it's very intro already starts off differently compared to 99% of all other tactical RPGs out there. And yes, with the exception of something like Divinity Original Sin series, we haven't really had a good party based RPG in a long while. It's easily ten times better than something like Pathfinder Kingmaker or even Baldur's Gate 3. (Yes, not even kidding. It might not have the same production values, but gameplay is easily superior.) If you're looking for some decent combat in a party based RPG, this is it. There's enough XCOM-esque challenge. I do agree the dialogue writing could use some work. I mean, it already starts off kind of lame the first ten minutes with multiple characters referring to beer as 'donkey piss'. Sorry, but that's not natural nor very funny. The game has more lines like this, unfortunately.

      It's definitely an underrated RPG and I'm looking forward to seeing more from this developer in the future.

    Excellent review, Mark. I really like the organization of them, but particularly that you don't pretend that you're reviewing with no bias. Some reviewers do this and it always annoys me, as everyone carries their own baggage. Thanks

      Thanks! Indeed there is no point in trying to put myself across as "neutral" over a game I've played as I have my own preferences and opinions like anyone else. But even the games I love will have flaws that need pointing out to potential buyers, and vice versa for games I hate (though fortunately they are few!).

    I am trying a new party with a Sorcerer and testing myself went without a rogue :) I took a lowlife background on my Ranger and took the boost lockpicking feat at 4th. Problem is I have no way of identifying magic items :)

    • @MarksGameReviews
      @MarksGameReviews  Před 3 lety +1

      Nice idea with the ranger! Not being able to ID the items is a pain, do you have anyone can make scrolls of Detect Magic? At a pinch you can always pay the vendors in town to ID them.

      @@magecraft2 Does the Sorceror not have Identify as a ritual? Its not in the spell book, but goes off a little symbol on his hotbar. Takes 10 minutes of game time (which is skipped) to ID one item (which doesn't have to be "Detect MAgic'ed" first if you suspect it is magical). I had it on my wizard.
