Who else thinks Foxes afloat is by far the best narrow boat channel on CZcams? I certainly do🙂
Aww cheers.
I think there's a couple more I love to watch they all bring different info and their way of life on the cannels and the boats are so different love um all x
@@mazingmumma1 yes Sam agreed. There are some really good narrow boat channels on CZcams but what I love with foxes afloat is all the history and information we get told. It’s not just about their lifestyle, but the other stuff that goes with the channel. I find the history side of it brilliant. So much dedication and hard work goes into every Vlog they do🙂👍
@@FoxesAfloat no worries guys your channel is superb🙂👍
I agree!! I do like the others but Foxes afloat is my favorite. I just recently found Narrowboating and love them. I am from an old Yorkshire family who left England in 1620’s. So I was really unaware of the canal’s and the history that Colin tells is fascinating to me since I love all History especially English, Scottish, and Wales. All parts of family history. Keep up the good work!
Thanks to everyone who asked about the stone next to Bridge 24 - Wood End Lift Bridge. I've been reliably informed that the stone was placed by the family and friends as a memorial to Gerry Moore, a young, local firefighter who lived on a narrowboat near the bridge just outside Marple where stone is laid. He died in the mid-1980's from carbon monoxide poisoning after his water heater malfunctioned 💜
How sad. Thanks for the update.
Ahhhhhh 🥺
Very sad! a thought goes out to Gerry.👍🏻
Rip Gerry may you sail the cuts in the sky forevermore
Aww. So sad. God bless him and his family.
Today I learned that neither President Washington nor Napoleon Bonaparte built the Peak Forest Canal. So I both learned something and had 20 minutes of relaxing zen while watching.
Haha! Nice one. I hope you are suitably chilled now 👍🏻
I’ve picked up your habit ... every time I see a train I say, “Traaaaaain!”
😂😂😂
Me too
lol me too and i live near two rail lines . mums forever telling me to stop lol
Lol me and my kiddo do that too now!
Glad I'm not the only one lol
I prefer the “Otis Weather Station” if his fur is blowing, it’s windy, if his ears are blowing, it’s really windy... if he’s wet it’s raining...
😂😂😂
If he is panting, it's hot, if he is sleeping by the fire, it's cold.
If he's casting a shadow it's sunny...
@@duncanwright5729 No, that means there is still 6 more weeks of winter. Do they have Groundhog Day in England?
Really good show lads very informative with a laugh. - re the windless on the Turf Lea lift bridge - these windlasses were made at British Waterways Newark Repair Yard on the River Trent. They were known as ‘Granny Pumps’ not sure exactly why but guess because they were so easy to operate. The case was made from SG cast iron (spheroidal graphite) as it is ductile. With a casappa bidirectional pump inside. Each revolution delivered the same amount of oil in either direction. Oil is pumped into the hydraulic ram that lifts the bridge. The hydraulic ram has two pipes leading into it one to the cap end and the other to the rod end. To cap end (for lifting) has a larger volume to fill and produces the greater force, this is why it took 80 turns to lift. The rod end (lowering the bridge) has a 50mm piston rod in it and therefore less volume hence 50 turns to lower. This side produces less force hence used for the lower of the bridge - hope this helps 👍
Amazing! Thanks so much Phill!
Morning guys, reference the lift bridge. The mechanism is hydraulic with the crank being a hydraulic pump, the pumps are not very efficient and they tend to leak internally when pumping up against the weight of the bridge but on lowering they basically freewheel down so hardly leak at all. Hope I have explained it well.
Keep on cruising
Stan Alison and Nutmeg 🐕
Perfect! Even Otis understood that 😂👍🏻
Because the bridge is biased to lower - IE: cut chains, bridge goes down. So there is a gear difference, lower gear to raise, more turns. Easier to lower, higher gear.
👍🏻
There should be 2gears if that was true.
Gerry Moore was a London based jazz pianist. In September 1936 the Radio Times referred to him as "Britain's King of Swing." The bridge clearly is now thought of as Britain's King of Swing. Made me laugh out loud when I figured it. Stand there and watch "The King of Swing" in action!
So why was he in Strines?
@@FoxesAfloat Leave it with me :D
@@Lulu-jl5zd j
Nah can't see it. Strines? Maybe in his song lyrics?
essential . meaty droplet. No words, absolutely no words.....
Can't make it up!
I spotted that and thought surely Colin's got to say something about that! 🤣🤣
I saw that too and laughed out loud.
You can’t say that.
As opposed to evidence.jokes.stammer which was probably more accurate... 🤣
This is the only channel I'm a paying subscriber and for good reason! Every video is the perfect mix of interesting history, beautiful views, and entertainment.
And we appreciate that SOOOO much. Thank you, Alan 👍🏻
Alan, totally agree. Love theses guys🥰 and have no problem being a paid subscriber. This is the only channel I subscribe too. One thing the pandemic has taught me, if it doesn’t bring me joy to let go.
Hi guys with regard to todays vlog Gerry Moore was a Fireman who worked at Cheadle Hulme Fire Station in Greater Manchester. He lived on his Narrowboat and was well known along the Peak Forest and Macclesfield Canals being known locally as "Gerry Moore man of the countryside." Unfortunately Gerry was found dead on his Narrowboat sometime in the early 80's having succumbed to Carbon Monoxide poisoning he could only have been in his early thirties. Hope this helps, Howard
If that's true it's very sad! 😞
@@FoxesAfloat It certainly is true I was in the Fire Service with Gerry his passing was well covered by local media at the time.
Hi guys my uncle was the manager of the bleaching and dyeing dept of strines mill for many years and i was so sad when he passed away at the age of 65 about 18 yrs ago of lung cancer from the chemicals used over the years, stay safe guys
Oh no! 💜
Just wanted to say that as an Expat who enjoyed many summer holidays on the Canals with my Grandparents years ago, thank you both for brining back so many wonderful memories for me. I also love how much of each video is spent discussing the history of whichever area you are in. I hope get as much enjoyment out of making these videos as I get out of watching them :)
I totally do! Thanks so much for watching 👍🏻
Your mention and video of Dillon made me sad
but then Otis made me smile! You guys are the best!
💜
Geek time! The reason for more turns one way than the other is its a double acting hydraulic ram, which means its displacing the ram from the cylinder going up, this needs more oil to send it out, and produces more force to lift the bridge. Then coming down, the oil between the ram and the cylinder pushes the bridge back, down, and there's less volume, because of the ram taking up some of the volume so less oil to pump!
Bet you're glad you asked now!!!😂😂
Made me even keener to revisit the Peak Forest this summer🤞🤞🤞
I knew someone would know! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Don't EVER stop talking Colin! You're hilarious, and who would Shaun laugh at, I mean laugh with, if you ever stopped talking?!?
Haha! Shaun always laughs. It's the best sound oil the world. 💜
I love watching you two, your laughter is infectious and the storyline as you go along is interesting, you have obviously researched the locality, and the stories often dissolve into TRAIN as one goes clattering by. Keep going lads, and of course Otis the wonder dog. Ruth
Thank you so much!
TRRRRRRAAAAAAAAIIIIIIN! 😂
the double entendres are good too :-)
As the Norwegians say, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only inadequate clothing." Thanks as always Love your videos and you guys.

Thanks for including lots of shots of Otis in this video. Since we lost our Brittany, Molly, last Spring, I can never get enough of him. I also like all of the backstory info you include. It adds to the whole experience. I look forward to each new installment,
Aww, thanks so much!

A turtleneck wearer here ... ordered a black cashmere 'snood' before this video was over. It just arrived. Not only love it around my neck, but found I can do crazy stuff with it on my head too...a hat with a little place for my ponytail to poke out! Just ordered 3 more/colors which will arrive tomorrow with the predicted snowstorm 🌨️❄️. So, a big thank you, Shaun, fashion icon😉! Love you both...stay safe, stay warm and well. x
Haha! I never expected anyone to call Shaun a fashion icon 😂
The lift bridge uses a hydraulics. More pressure is needed to raise the bridge due to the weight. Less pressure to lower due to gravity.
Ta daa! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Gravity yes hydraulics no
It's gear driven with a sprag clutch assembly
i waked the old Harecastle rail Tunnel in the 80's when I was a rebellious teen

Thanks, CJ. You too!
Hmmm, the cranker on that lift bridge is hydraulic, not geared or cabled, so there is no direct link between the upness and the number of crankings. Just like hydraulic paddle gear there is a bit of slip in the mechanism. Cranking up the weight of the bridge will make the mechanism slip more so more crankery is required. Winding down the weight of the bridge will help because in the direction of down gravity is your friend. So you need a smaller crank to go down on it. Or something.
You brainy bugger 😉
I look forward to you guys putting out a video every Friday. The chemistry between you two and Colin's genuine love for the history of where you guys go is great. Keep it up!

Aww, thank you so much, David! 👍🏻💜
About the winch; there is a way to construct a gear that will give you a different ratio depending on the way you turn the crank. It´s a bit difficult to explain without a drawing (and I can´t seem to find any), but a moveable cogwheel that changes position depending on the input force/direction will engage alternating larger/smaller cogwheels. This will change the ratio up and down "automatically". I´m not sure this is the case on the bridge winch, but seems like a logical explanation ;) Btw, -22C when I got to work this morning in Gjøvik in inland Norway by lake Mjøsa - all iced up now. No canal boats, but you´ll find Skibladner operating in the summer; the worlds oldest paddle steamboat in regular traffic - google it, it´s a beautiful ship :)

Is that a new toy on the roof - who's into weather checking? :) Weight of bridge assists with closing it maybe???

Hi guys, great episode this week, I noticed you have a new mini wind turbine. Let us know all about it please . Cheers guys
Hi Gary, it is a small Weather Station. The cups will tell the wind speed, the vane at the bottom will tell the direction it is blowing. You will have to hope the lads see your post so they can tell us about it because it does look a neat bit of kit.
I never thought it could be a weather station. Hi guys there is always a purpose with a rational reason, so why guys is the question.
It's our new weather station. We had one before on the stern but it stopped working so we got this one and moved it to the roof.

Otis looks like he will jump out any minute, he is so intent on seeing and watching. Quite a few different type of bridges, interesting to see. Bet it does get cold this weather but at least its warm and inviting inside. Keep safe and warm xxx
Yeah, he's very inquisitive 🥰
It takes 80 winds to lift as the pump is worn and some oil bypasses the rotary pump rollers. Lowering is lower pressure and any escaping oil helps speed up the operation.. So, there we are! Incidentally if you only wind very slowly all the oil escapes and it won't go up at all...
Thanks for the info!
So the bridge is raised hydraulically, not by winding a cable or chain? Does the crank pump fluid into a cylinder?
SUrely if it was losing hydraulic fluid, it would run out?
@@sshep86 it's a sealed unit, any oil bypassing the rotor just returns to the reservoir.
Like I said, if you wind slowly the bridge won't budge... Conversely if you wind like a wurling dervish you could possibly get it up in 50 turns!
