  • We continue our Peak Forest Canal journey heading from New Mills, through Furness Vale, taking our narrowboat to Bugsworth Basin and discovering the Peak Forest Tramway in the village of Buxworth.
Colin explains how we create these vlogs, and takes his new bike to discover the hidden Peak Forest Tramway, which played a huge part in Bugsworth Basin's success. He also delves into the old lime kilns at the basin. Join us as we explore Britain by Narrowboat.

I've run out of superlatives to praise your vlogs! Always look forward to the weekly treat! Thank you for explaining how you put the vlogs together - a major bit of work. But, as a viewer, I can say that the care and work you put into the filming and editing and choice of music is ALWAYS worth it! Oh, and the scenery in this blog is beautiful and the history of Buggy Basin is fascinating!

The drone view of Bugsworth Basin at the 5:05 point seriously messed with my head; it first registered in my mind as the curved part at left side of screen being on an incline and going over the straight part on right, which went in a tunnel under the curve. Wait a minute! My brain knows, knows, truly knows, that a water surface can't be on a slope like a road surface can! But yet that's exactly what my brain was telling me that my eyes were seeing!

Was born and grew up in Bux(gs)worth and so pleased you call it Buggy, which many older locals still do.
My gran used to live at Gnat Hole cottages on Silk Hill and it's certainly a steep climb towards the top. Your research is spot on and even the pictures of the Heron and the pigs are so true.
I walk along the canal and tramway very frequently and it's nice to see it through your eyes as well.

It's a regular visitor around here, it'll stand there staring in to the water as you walk by, barely paying you any attention (as long as you don't have a dog). I've only seen it once this year though, but it comes and goes.
      Pig-wise there's only one now.

Love all your vlogs, and have seen them all. Have to say yours stand out because of the excellent quality of filming and in particular the historical and factual detail you add, which makes them really enjoyable, and to fellow boaters gives really useful information on locations. I have to say i also love the music you add Colin. It matches up to the views beautifully. Love the hilarious moments you and Shaun share. Happy cruising nbSilver Fox!

So VERY much enjoyed this one Colin and Shaun. The drone footage was nothing short of exceptional, but I have to say, the icing on the cake, is how well researched your history of the sites you visit are. I so much appreciate learning about things like Lime, Kilns, old Infrastructure; it is quite fascinating. I so appreciate how England has preserved so much of her heritage, especially from the Industrial Revolution. I have one request though . . . could you guy's possibly adopt me so that I could become a citizen??? Thanks for this one, it was well worth the wait ;)

So Shaun think about doing a book about your life on the canals and your love for Colin, Dillon and Otis. We( your enduring fans) would definately support you and buy it!! Given you have approximately 30 years of experience( ha ha) we would love to hear your take on life with the man of your dreams and your pets! Love you guys. So proud of you. Yes proud. You share so much with us and deal so courageously with the craziness in this world. Well anyway, think about it. A book called and then there was Dullion and Otis or love children on the locks.

Random story no one cares about but me! I remember buggy basin very fondly as the place where the songwriting on vixen was finalised. We had a friend of the family with us and I remember my father and uncle discussing it and deciding on “crossland and co canal steerage” couple of months later it was done and that was that.
I really miss that boat! I’d buy her back now if I could find her.

Hey guys. Another great vlog - I had to come to the USA for work, Portland Oregon, but thank god that CZcams works here and I can catch up with this week’s adventures.
I have to say, I’m not surprised it takes you so long to edit your vlogs. Of all the vlogs I subscribe to, yours is by far the most superior - I love the quality of the filming, and particularly the amazing drone footage. Colin you have an amazing eye and ear for setting the right tone with just the right music for the great footage you’ve captured. I absolutely love getting lost in the spectacle of the aerial footage you have. It’s narrowboat porn - just amazing!
Please don’t get burnt out doing all the vlogs though - remember to take a break and enjoy your time afloat. I love your pieces to camera, but don’t beat yourself up too hard when you get it wrong - just be yourself and leave your mishaps in.
Anyway, looking forward to catching up with your next instalment soon. Take care, Darren xx

'Narrowboat Porn' Hahaha! 😂 Love it!
I really enjoy producing these vlogs and burnout isn't something I (or Shaun) will let happen. If anything, I get bored if I'm not doing anything, so these help keep my mind occupied.
      Have fun in Portland! x

Every year in October pre Covid they had a steam party at the Navigation Inn. The area round the basin is filled with traction engines and other historic vehicles. One local farming family , the Marchingtons started the Buxworth steam group and put on local steam rallys. One of them owned the Flying Scotsman loco at one time.

California here.... How is all of this possible? I am aware of the Channel Trust BUT it must take thousands of people and tons of resources to provide water, electrical hookups, refuse cleanup, etc. How is all of this fully funded to ensure resources are available in the future?
