The Matrix didn't really explore free will that much, more just Cartesianism to some extent but even then it wasn't really very philosophical beyond the basic premise.

The idea of "death row has to fight by being controlled by some nerdy ass kids" actually sounds like a fun idea but it requires someone with an actual vision and a team with actual talent.
I saw this movie when it came out. I was 22 and actually considered myself an avid gamer. I felt ashamed to have watched it. It was pointless, overly over the top for the sake of being over the top, and it felt as if an edge lord 13 year old wrote the screenplay because of all of the language and sex man's violence involved. It was an interesting watch but my God it was fucking terrible.

I loved this movie. The NPCs only have no body armor, no control, etc. If they survive, they get out, or something along those lines. High risk, high reward. That's talked about in some of the early exposition
The part where crazy dude is sweeping was explained. you can choose to be put into the environment as an uncontrollable NPC and if you survive only one game you get set free. pretty much all the NPCs die so the ods are against you.

During my Logan Lerman phase, as a 12 year old, I got my mom to rent this movie for us and we watched not even two minutes of it before we both cut it off. The npcs in the slayers game are death row inmates who instead of being controled by a player they are controled by ai and because they arent actively fighting they only have to survive one round instead of 30 but the thing is slayers get points for killing them and they often get killed in the crossfire so next to none actually survive a single round.
