While UE is a good remaster and you can really appreciate the work put into it, the original game's art style seems to have been mostly lost, as such, I prefer the original more.

Of course! As u can see, as far as my opinion at least some parts actually looks better in the original. I think the darker tone and gritty look, looks better in the original. The remaster is more light base vs the original darker grittier look which suits the series better. I also dont like Marcus blue look vs the original metallic darker look. The cave level looks amazing in the remaster over the original. So basically at the end of the day overall the remasterl is better with some parts looking a little bit better in the original and vice versa
i like the 360 version more. the picture seems more bleak and raw, i even like the old weapon firing effects more, it fits better into a setting of a world gone down the shitter.
As much as I'd like to play this one, I'm new to the series. I feel like going from this, then back to the 360 version for Gears 2 would be way too noticable of a difference. This seems like the kind of thing you'd want to play after you've already finished the series.
Yeah I just recently played the entire series a few months ago and while Gears 2 is my favorite game in the entire series, it really needs a remake for this reason. Gears 3's graphics are good enough on the Xbox back compat that it's honestly fine as-is, but going from the remake of 1 to 2 is a really big leap
I know this is an old post but I’ve been playing on an Xbox series s. I can say I played ultimate edition and went back to 2. At first yes the graphics seem rough but after the first level or so I got into the game and it wasn’t bad. Wouldn’t mind a remake but it’s worth going back to play for the story. I ended up beating ultimate edition first, then went to gears 4, back to 2, then to 3 to fill in the story. Finished 3 today. Now I’ve still got judgement and 5 to play.
They moved to something like the Gears of War 3 lighting. That really hurts it for me. The original is much darker and in keeping with the horror setting they were going for. Other than that, it's mostly a lot better.
+Polo Surf Its no remake since it is using the original engine with all the same gameplay intact. It just has some new assets put on top of it while being unfaithful to the original artistic intention. Much like Halo anniversary. Resident Evil 2002 was an actual remake.

I still like all the detail on 360, old vines hanging on the walls, more textures on the suits, ground/rock details etc. The UE is very clean clear and bland in some cases. While 360 remains dirty and gritty, much to crisp and refined for me. I have all 3 on 360, all are great. I also have the UE, but i never play it, just because, well to me it's lacking. It may be redone, and polished, but to me, that's not what Gears should be. I don't like and probably never will like any Mircrosoft Remasters. Leave that to Sony. Owning both has shown me this, a lot. Play UC Collection, you'll see what can really be done with 3 great older games, instead of one. I'm 40, so not a fan man/guy. Just honest, imo.

Damn Act 3’s environment looks so much better in the OG. Watching this video on my phone I can barely tell if it’s raining in the UE. It’s more horrorish when it’s down pouring and fog creates reduced visibility. Also I think I like the armor in the OG more as well.
Those pre-rendered cut-scenes are going to suck for PC gamers. They will just be 1080p video, which will leave them blurry on higher resolution monitors. I don't know if they are rendered at 60fps either. Most games use 24-30fps video. It will be a disappointment for people with monitors that render at higher than 60hz either way. You then have the ability to customize the settings and ini files which will now not affect these scenes. If you want to turn off that repulsive motion blur, it will still be in the cut-scenes. If you want to reduce the texture bias, up the AA and filtering, increase draw distances and number of cast shadows, up shadow resolutions etc - none of that will affect cut-scenes which will be dramatically worse looking than in-game ini tweaks.
I like the old x360 version a lot more. It's just like diablo 3 vs. diablo 1/2. The older ones are way more gritty, down and dirty and faaaaaar more gothic than the last installments.

2021 - man, do I love this game. My favorite Gears game, remade from the ground up, looking so beautiful. Also, this analysis video is great - as to be expected from Digital Foundry.
I like the old real time cut scenes,it made the game feel more realistic,like I was playing a movie,controlling the star.Pre-rendering takes away that feeling.I rather get the original versions on pc.
Personally, I like the overall grainy/ darker look of the original. It looks like the gears which didn't have the same atmospheric terror that the original and 2nd game did. The original games were dark and creepy and since the third game gears just hasn't been the same.
From the technical side the remastered version is more impressive, but it seems like the new team knows nothing about visual design since they removed much of the aesthetics and atmosphere found in the original, killing the distinctive look the game was known for.

This was just the original release. It was different when they upgraded to the new voice engine in the remaster.
UE is a great remake but MS should consider giving gears 2 and 3 a "simple" frame rate and resolution buff. Gears 3 MP at 60 fps would be amazing.
