Gears 1 2 3 were a heartfelt trilogy following a warhero's perspective as he struggles with ptsd and war grinding up everything and everyone around him. Gears 4 was a melodramatic shooter about the war hero's entitled son and gears 5 is a full on tela novella spin off about the chosen one 9000 who was the entitled son's obvious love intrest in the previous game. The direction of the story isnt even the problem I like a little saucy drama but the writing is so fucking bad they make her LITERALLY say to the war hero's entitled son (who was the main protagg in the last game)"Screw your orders, It isn't about you, It is about me" to this man with 0 fucking nuance as the game starts in earnest.
@@andypantsgaming bro the only thing gears of war about gears 5 are the gameplay mechanics and supporting cast, the story just feels like it came from left field with bad tv show writing in hand like a baton.
I just don't agree and over 75% user reviews on multiple platforms like metacritic, steam, and Xbox reviews don't support your thoughts on 4 and 5 . While 4 and 5 aren't as good as the og trilogy they still are good games. Far better than the likes of halo 4 or 5 respectively. You want to talk about a franchise that has gone down the shitter talk about halo, now let's talk about the gears franchise that is doing just fine. Also still waiting on gears 2 and 3 remasters if they happen at all. Mindless negative posts was the final dagger in the halo franchise don't make the same mistakes as the halo community has done for the last 12 years. Make some actual constructed criticism based videos without the negative click bait video BS. In today's gaming industry you have to realize that 50% of a game's success comes from how people post and think about a game. If people just hate a game because of some cheesy dialogue lines and a female protagonist you aren't giving a solid opinion, just a 5 year olds tantrum of an opinion. The majority of the negative reviews literally all cite these little insignificant details instead of acting and playing a game like an adult with a critical thinking mindset. Again the halo community suffered these same issues and the franchise has suffered not just by the devs but by a spit childish emotional community. We are all adults here right ? *Sigh*
Here's some constructive criticism from me - I just played the first game and then played the fourth one. The fourth game fails to deliver everything that made the first three games great, apart from John DiMaggio's wonderful performance as Marcus Fenix. This game has no level design, writing for toddlers, ruined gameplay mechanics, braindead AI and do you wanna know how I got to finish Gears 4? 20 minutes of playing interrupted by 20-30 minutes of going to CZcams to watch a full cinematic of Gears 2. That was the only thing that kept me from uninstalling it immediately after the rock, paper, scissors cutscenes and the 50 "DONT POP THE PODS" lines. The game literally punishes you for playing it and every time I loaded it up I had to every single time close an ad for Gears 5. This shit isn't worth its full price. If it wasn't 5 bucks on Microsoft Store I wouldn't have bothered at all and if Marcus Fenix wasn't in it, I wouldn't have bought it at all. And it kinda feels like the devs knew that and that's the only reason they left him in the game... If Gears 2 and 3 were available on PC, I would've never bought 4. I'm certainly not gonna play 5.
Tie killed himself because of ptsd he couldn't live with the trauma the locust put him through and doms wife didnt zombify when she changed thats how she actually looked where as before dom basically had rose tinted glasses on.
Tie killed himself because his body was just a carcass. He believed in the afterlife (or reincarnation, i do ;t really remmember) so he "freed his souls" (it was on the comics)
With companies like Sweet Baby Inc basically having a death grip over the throats of Microsoft and other companies, we might never get a good gears game again.
Considering the events of the last week, I'd say it's the other way around, where Microsoft has a death grip on the studios under its umbrella. Including The Coalition, Gears of War's current development team. Whether or not Sweet Baby Inc has any real power over a game's success, is inconsequential --- Microsoft doesn't guarantee job security, either way. And I imagine morale has plummeted quite drastically, as a result. There _is,_ however, a possibility The Coalition has immunity, being a steward of one of Microsoft's flagship franchise, just like 343i, but there's no assurance of this.
I remember when I hosted a Gears of War 3 tournament at home. Three friends had brought over their consoles and 36in flat screens. With fully loaded horde and multiplayer games, adding in pop and pizza, it was the best time.
Gears ended with the third one, for me. Once Cliffy left, it became average. Even the graphics became cartoonish. I recall the gaming media mocking the colour pallette, labelling it brown. But that realistic, gritty tone, was Gears. When they started adding robots & the focus was taken away from Marcus, the magic was lost. I don't want Gears 6. I want a complete reboot, with Cliff back in charge. Great video, I completely agree with all your points. Gears was the personification of masculinity, done in a fun way.
Cliff was awful and took a lot of credit that didn’t belong to him. Also a super douche in real life, he was neighbor in nc. Trust me, if you ever meet him, you’ll hate him
Tai was considered 'unbreakable' by many, true...but not even someone like him could be put through Locust torture without coming out the other side wrong... Maria on the other hand got put through an even worse form of the Locust torture where they end with lobotomy via gouging a knife into the base of the upper eyelid so the blade scrapes at the portion of the brain that makes a person who they are alongside other things like basic motor functions; its how they make obedient slaves and why she looks so dessicated by the time Marcus and Dom find her in 2
I genuinely miss short, linear, singleplayer campaigns (8-15 hours max on normal difficulty) that are also highly replayable. The problem with modern AAA games is you either get an open world or some kind of RPG with hundreds of hours of padding... or, on the other side of the scale, excessively cinematic, linear campaigns that have only 30-50% of it being actual gameplay. And I hate when the latter is often considered as the same thing as the older, more gameplay-focused games. I love Max Payne 3, but it's certainly an example of just how much things changed across the years from the way games were handled way back in terms of the ratio between story and core gameplay.
Yeah, I was going to play Dishonored 2 but I realized I had a lot of acheievments to get in the first game. I went through the whole game and dlc with energy to play it more as I messed up my ghost run. The game takes less than 10 hours to beat at a casual rate and has lots of replayablity. I tried to play Deus Ex HR but I think its a little too dated or something. I'd like to try the sequel which Ive seen on sale for 5$. These "immersive sim" games they call them are superb imo. They respect your time and have excellent gameplay.
@@iBishopEsquire, I'm almost done with Human Revolution, and, while I agree that certain gameplay mechanics are dated (as some quick examples, tap to aim with no options for holding a button down for it... or the janky gunplay), I still think it holds up really well. Pacing is fantastic story-wise, especially! Altho it still does take a while to get into immersive sims since I would still usually prefer more straightforward games with engaging combat as the core pillar... but that's more of a preference thing.
I was a big fan of the Gears of War games. Played 1 - Judgement. I went on an hiatus for a while cuz of adult life. I returned and picked up the latest game in the series; gears 5. And I am shocked by how everything is different. The writing is bad too. Only pro I can think of is the gore is still fine
Yo i think you need to go and play the games again lol. Maria was tortured and Lobotomised, Tai got his mind broken by torture he wasnt being turned into a locust
Apparently this is an unpopular opinion, but I honestly thought Gears 5 was great. The graphics and gameplay significantly evolved and basically represent the pinnacle of the series. The campaign expanded on the lore and incorporated some interest open-world elements and the horde mode is BEST IN CLASS, in my opinion, with its varied classes, upgrades, and fantastic maps.
Yeah, I hated Kate when I saw her; however, even agreeing with this video I grew to like Kate and the banter from the Gears kids. I liked that 3 zone multiplayer mode they had from comp play too.
Back when these games came out, they also had very fun online PvP modes similar to cod/halo like team deathmatch, executioner, king of the hill, which were a lot of fun and very competitive. Gears 2 and 3 also introduced horde mode and beast mode which are a ton of fun as well. This added a lot of replay-ability beyond the story modes. It was honestly such a great series, and it's too bad they couldn't make more games like the first three to keep the franchise alive.
That trailer for gears 1 was amazing. The online, crab walking, Hosting Over power, MLG battles… man what a great time to be alive and a kid with no responsibility with all your buddies and shiiiite talking after a match. I’ll never forget how amazing these 3 games where. I still put beating General RAMM on insane on my resume, that’s a life achievement.
And beating the original gears trilogy with my girlfriend through split screen, so insane is a memory i'll never forget. Also I do not know why AI seems so much weaker than it did in the early 2000s. I will reference one game that came out before gears of war, Rainbow 6 Vegas one and two. Very fun cover-based games. Looking back one of my biggest issues was having to hold down the button to stay in cover.
So, just to clarify, gears cover system is actually a continuation of a ps2 game from 2003 called Killswitch. It's a fun, but shallow shooter from that era.
I bought Gears of War 1 on launch day back in 2006 I can't really describe how amazing that game looked and felt at the time. I would say it was the first true "next- gen" game that generation, it was the best graphics I had ever seen. The cover based gameplay, I had never played a game like that before. I honestly think that they should reboot this franchise, pretend that Gears 4 and 5 never happened, make a whole new cast of characters, get rid of "The Swarm" completely and bring The Locust back somehow. Make the art style darker and bring back the horror like it was in the first game.
Gears of War actually did not create cover-based shooter genre, only popularized it. The first shooter with cover-based mechanic is Winback series by Omega Force in 1999. But the cover-based mechanics that we knew today was first introduced by Namco USA's Kill Switch in 2003.
From what i remember. There was a huge shift in third person shooters once RE4 came out. While it is true that Gears pioneered third person cover shooting, RE4 pioneered the over the shoulder precision aiming camera which at the time i saw many games adopting into their design. At the time the Games i noticed such as the first Uncharted, Dead Space, MGS4, GTAIV, and several others started using RE4's precision aiming mechanics, including gears itself.
Yes RE4 was one of the first 3rd person shooters, but Gears popularized the cover based shooter. Last of Us and Uncharted both borrowed this from Gears. Games like GTA 4 you can see didn't borrow Gears mechanics and were worse for it.
Gears of war 1 is my all time favorite game and I adore the OG trilogy to death, making me a fan. Even if games like 5 & Judgment aren't as good, I still enjoy them.
I’ll tell you the exact reason Gears of War failed: Greed. As someone who’s put literally thousands of hours into Gears of War and was top 10 in the world for Gears 1 I truly have seen the decline of Gears of war from within. The decline started in Gears of War 3 when attempting to appeal to the masses and gain even more money they sold out and reverted to copying other games for their success. They implemented game modes like team deathmatch, made the gameplay more noob friendly with weapons like the sawed off shotgun and tried everything to get more newbies to play their game. The downfall grew from there until we seen Gears 5 with their Terminator skins and FOMO cash shop. The first 2 games had an exciting and immersive campaign but yet again it was three that ran out of ideas and instead said “ohhh shiny explosive locusts” In truth It went for graphics over gameplay, copying others instead of innovating and sold its soul, and no matter how hard they try, it will never be successful ever again.
Your comment about enemy Ai somehow being so much worse NOW compared to older games.. Is 100% fact! I don't understand how games that released early 360 days have not just enemy Ai miles above what we see today but they also did many other core things that make good games great. I won't list them all here but Gaming desperately needs to Reconnect to these core aspects of games that the 360 era and the PS3/PS2 era did So well as a whole.. Idk know how gaming got so derailed and I wish it never did..
I have tons of memories playing Gears 2 for hours and hours online with my brother and other friends. It was a beloved online game for sure. Gears 3 wasn’t quite as good online and I know a lot of other guys struggled as well with the gameplay transition. Gears 1 & 2 were the best IMO. Gears 3 was good too, but it played too fast and that damn sawed off shotgun was a train wreck of a weapon and messed up the balance of gameplay. But ya. I like this synopsis for sure. It’s accurate. I’d like to go back one of these days and try them again.
Just wanted to correct a small mistake - Gears 1 has revives in the campaign if you're playing Coop, but not if you're playing solo. Gears 2 added going down before dying in single player.
Going to be controversial to say, but it was at its best when it was just the dude bro shooter. They added some emotion to add more depth to the story and characters in 2 onward but it was still just gritty gore and testosterone. Then, the whole tone and shooter changed. The devs moved around and changed. Cliffy B changed. Then, the whole franchise changed for the worst trying to appeal to everyone and forgetting the core attraction to the series. There was nothing wrong with just being that hardcore dude bro shooter, but like Halo 4, Gears 4 onward tried chasing trends and culture zeitgeists and lost its charm.
Why is everyone saying Winback is the 1st cover based shooter? When it's not, because, in actuality, the Time Crisis series had the cover mechanic 1st. The game came in out 1995.
gears 1 and 3 to this day are my favorite multi-player experiences its crazy that a 3rd person shooter could have a mechanism that seems so minor aka wall bouncing and canceling leading to perhaps the most high skill ceiling and intensive movement mechanic I've ever seen, and I have thousands of hours in cs surf and tf2 rocket and sticky jumper maps. there's just nothing else quite like being a good gears player on a movement tech level 👌 go back and check out some of those old essence montages and thank me later 👍
Gears of War 4... Maybe it's me? The dialogue/writing was hollow. Felt like it was created, just for money? Gears of War 3 finished the story, basically. But nope, The Swarm had to be a thing. With nothing new offered. Bring back the horror element and fear/pressure in cover based crossfire.
I always had the feeling that Gears 5 was well received by the community after the fourth game had a rough time. It was clear for me from the start that the franchise needed kind of a new direction after the first trilogy and the very mediocre Judgment. I actually enjoyed the fifth game, especially the Next-Gen-Version looking and playing great. Gears of War is at least facing similar problems God of War on the PlayStation had. Both franchises don't shine with a wide range of Gameplay features and a rich, deep story. God of War is now going a complete different direction while The Coalition tries to stick when it comes to the roots of the series while trying new things. They are at least doing a better job in my opintion compared to 343 Industries with Halo which is currently a train wreck, Gears is miles away from this derailed train.
The main problem with the newer gears is that they forget what makes gears gears. Their to focused on getting more people to play gears then just making a gears game. Just look how to changed the name it went from Gears of WAR to Gears. Each new Gears game is dumbing down the gore and violence. Just look at the Gears 5 gameplay the blood looks like jellO. Going back to OG gears 1 and 2 that shit was violent. I remember taking the time to look at a locust corpse after I chain sawed them. Seeing guts and bone coming out and thinking Nice. Remember how in Gears 1 Carmine got shot in the face and you saw a big hole in his head then his lifeless body hits the ground? In Gears 5 I cant even think of a scene being that dark or violent. Now you think okay the violence is toned down that means the story should be good right? No its not. Gears 4 was alright but, not as good. I take as a decent first Gears game made by the new studio. Then Gears 5 stop focusing on JD then mind you previous game made him the main character and the prime focus for the trailers. To focus on Kate. Yes Kate the one that no one really cared for some did do to the mystery at the end of 4 and her mom dying. Not only that they try to make every single way to make JD look like a dick. Bold move for them to do unfortunately for a good few people some people liked JD now your making him an ass of himself. Not only that but, Gears 5 multiplayer sucked due to them focusing on microtransactions . Horde mode was a shadow of its former self the only cool mode might have been Hive . I barely remember the multiplayer in Gears 4 and 5 thats how dull it was. Not to mention if you wanted to character skin you have to get lucky and spend a good bit of money to get it. Older gears game you unlock by challenges or just got it from the store. Which is kinda crappy but, atleast I did have to spend 50+ to unlock UIR skin. The only point I disagree with the video is the part about women. Im not a sjw just wanted to say its fine to have females in gears but, dont make like Kate. There are plenty of females in the gears books that are just as badass as finx and it doenst pull the Mary Sue shit like Kate. Oh just thought about it the part of "Following orders" its not really a gears theme because in the books marcus didnt follow orders and got a whole city killed due to his actions. Still a good video on the subject but, I would have added that the Collation is just trying to appease to the market then Gears fans.
Nobody cares I don't think that's entirely true because Kate what's the most played character in MP I don't know why it wasn't going to go that way in the first place because at the end of gears 4 we all knew it was going to be her story moving forward Marcus storyline dies in gears 3 Kate connection to the locusts is more interesting to me than JD storyline so why would they make JD the main character nothing to tell on his part
Same thing happened with killzone on playstation, kz2 turned the gritty realism and high recoil intense hardcore shooter action to a 12 then had to codify it even after selling like hotcakes
I will say the one thing the new studio did right was the movement. Multiplayer feels the best it ever has and no more host advantage is a MASSIVE improvement, though I think they cleared that issue up in 3 But they changed and removed good weapons just like EVERY other studio that takes over for the original crew. They ALWAYS subtract and never add anything to the games Taking out the Hammer was by far the most stupid decision they have made. They removed the Digger launcher, changed the iconic Boltok sound for literally no reason whatsoever and so on. Even with all this I will say that it wasn't complete garbage like most other studios that take over. 343 for example. I find it funny that the singular thing these people do right is polish the multiplayer to an amazing extent in terms of movement and just how smooth everything feels... and that's where it ends because they take out fun and creative guns, ruin the ones we have and make them all sound like popcorn machines. Weak and impotent. Gears 4 and 5 are no where near as horrible as they could of been. On the other hand. How could we expect the original magic when we dont have the original people? Gotta be realistic about it I will agree with what was said here in the sense that they just pulled more of the woke agenda bullshit of just throwing an angry Woman on screen and calling it a day. So help Me if I see a disgruntled trans character be the star of the show in 6 🤣 On a more serious note they really could of made her an amazing female character. A true, strong Woman. Instead they went the lazy route and made her into a stereotype. Emotional, bitchy and never wanting to take sound advice I will also agree that they out right RUINED Marcus' son. You do not get some hot headed idiot like JD from a very stoic, get things done, fearless Man and a do what it takes, not afraidto get dirty, gritty, Very Intelligent and well written Woman. Them genetics dont make any sense. He would of had some personality disposition inbetween the two of them. Not some random jackass
Completely agree with you, you put this together well as someone that played gears from the start. I fell asleep with controller in hand playing gears 5
Gears 1, 2, and 3 made a perfect trilogy. Gears 3 is my personal favourite. The story was amazing. But it couldn't have been that great. Without Gears 2's mind-blowing introduction. Gears 1, we fought the battle. Gears 2 felt like a full-on war. And we were just playing a small part of it. And I still get chills when riding the Rig's to land-down..😂
Theory: why the AI got worse? In older games if the visual fidelity couldn’t be push further other areas were explored. Now marketing focuses on graphics and the development focus shifted to make beautiful games as this is how they can be sold. This is why AI does not get enough attention. It is a very complex process to make AI fun to play with. I recommend GDC panel on Doom 2016 AI (dumb it down to make it fun).
1 story 2 the enemies 3 the lack of atmesphere gears of war perfected alot of things always made newer things like choosing your path and finding tags but its still a masterpiece with potential if they add in story like the remnants of the cogs original opponent or monsters 2 big for life
I don't know if you credited whatever source you got for the footage of Gears 4, but maaaan 17:54 you start skipping through the video while recording it and I started WHEEZING So bored of it you couldn't even watch it back fully for the vid, I CAN'T that shit's so funny Also if you didn't properly source the footage maybe throw a link to it in the description. I don't personally care so much (hence I'm not checking very hard), but it is important if it's not your content to 1: get permission and 2: provide adequate links. Will keep ya out of hot water in the future! :)
In the gears of war religion, what we all revere for hard-core gears of war fan, it all went downhill when it came to the choice decision. They should never have done that for two reasons. One, they would have to make two versions of the game, depending on the outcome that was chosen. And two, how about outcome reflects on the interactions and choices of the characters. I was excited for the game at first. But it was in that moment that they fucked up.
I remember playing the prequel game gears tactics and refunding after 20 min because they had a side objective to save human prisoners. For those who don’t know a major plot point of Gears 2 is that Locust all the sudden started taking prisoners and processing them for god knows what. This is shocking since the Locust notoriously don’t take prisoners, and this entire mystery leads to finding out what happens to Dom’s wife. That entire thing is just retconned because the Devs didn’t play any of the older games and don’t give a shit about the lore.
Gears of war will forever hold a special place in my heart. the music, the dialogue, the story, the gameplay, gears 1-3 is just perfect. i sometimes go back and replay gears 1 and 3 and it never gets old. the comradery is some of the best ive ever seen in any game. its so damn realistic especially if youve served . my mom took me to a toys r us when i was like 10-14 years old and let me pick an M rated game. it was either Afro Samurai or Gears of War 1. i chose gears. we get home, turn the xbox and start playing. that ominous title screen will never leave my mind. my hears all the cussing and sees all the blood and knew she messed up buying me this game😂 the Berserker haunted me for years till ingot older and just laughed at it. i even know lines from the game like the back of my hand
I played Gears 3 probably x10. Featuring women was cool . But making it about women and being the main character reaks of that modern audience Bullshit. On top of other problems the newer ganes had
I got my Gears tattoo back in 2010 when i was 18 (my first and only tattoo) because of how much i loved the game. Absolutely no regrets looking at it today at 32 but sometimes i ask "what have they done to you?" For me it ended with Gears 3.
Gears 1 was the only game me and my brother had on our xbox 360 for all whole summer and i'll always remember playing it through every difficulty and loving it
I remember liking the first two JD missions of Gears 5, it felt like Old School Gears, the one where they stop a nuke and when they're being attacked in the city, after that it's like the game took a 180 turn
Very well put together video mate. To this day I’m still playing the original Gears, and it’s quite populated at certain times. I’ve actually just put a ‘montage’ on my channel you’d probably quite like!
I could barely complete part 4 and haven't gone past 20% in gears 5. The multiplayer on the other hand I had 200 hours before it went dead. They feel like different games from the Epic games ones. Like they are not cannon, just boring.
when I was younger my parents didn’t want me playing Gears when they saw me chainsaw someone online… so on my weekends I would wake up at 5-6 am before anyone was awake and play for a few hours
My problems are the swarm, the robots and finding out the locust were just science experiments. Imagine if they were aliens and they were fighting us to stop us from stealing their resources. And i liked when I use to think Marcus dad had a secret love affair with the Queen and she was possibly his mom. That would've been cool.
I've always hated the "nostalgia" argument and Gears of War is on top of my list of "play it now and tell me it's nostalgia". No, it was just that good and helps you realize how bad video games are now. Most of AAA video games just feel like a 20 year old game with a new coat of paint and obnoxious downgrades. Gears 4 is just like Gears of War, but with: - better graphics - worse writing - worse gameplay - worse weapons - worse AI - worse level design - no boss fights It's baffling how true the phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants" is when we're talking about the video game industry right now. And they're not even standing, they're taking a shit on the shoulders of giants. It's a crime against humanity that 2 and 3 aren't available on PC.
I was about 5 years old when i played Gears of war 1 it was my first video game and it has stuck with me ever since Im 18 now heading to college and im still in love with the franchise even if the new installments are not as good as previous ones
All they had to do was create a trilogy from the perspective of the locusts called "Locust Of War" where we experience events leading up to E Day, E Day itself and eventually the death of the locusts. It would of been cool to play as some of the cool locust characters like Jermad and learn their stories and just expand on the Lambert and locusts as a whole that would of been dope but nahh too good of an idea.
Maybe I'm just a massive gears fanboy but I honestly think every single gears game is a banger. Even the casual friendly GOW Judgement (who doesn't love Baird?) I have not played Gears Tactics.
We could have had Gears 4 bringing back Marcus, Baird, and Cole learning the Locust are not truly dead even with them being old like we see and made them the main characters
I've played a metric ton of Gears over the years. Finished the single player multiple times and lost an ungodly amount to their multiplayers. I actually enjoyed Gears 4 MP pretty well. Gameplay felt tight, they stripped back a lot of weapons and overall it felt pretty good. Gears 5 on the other hand, I stopped playing pretty quick. I think the fact the dropped the "of War" speaks for itself. It's a different game. I disliked the emotes at the end of rounds, blood sprays calling you trash or whatever. There was humour in other Gears titles but it didn't require such over the topness. Even little things like adding hit markers. They were just little things no one asked for. Oh and eSports. Competitive play is fun but basing the entire game around eSports for it's balancing sucks for the vast majority of players who aren't playing for money.
What are your thoughts on Judgement? I didn't hear you talk about that at all? I loved how fast and arcadey it was. Even if the writing was a little off from the originals. Gears 4 & 5 I definitely thought were missing something, but I really enjoyed them, especially the new gameplay adds. Gears 4 was a bit bland in writing. Gears 5 was definitely more millennial writing. Cliff is not coming back, officially. 8(
Also i strongly disagree with MGS2 being dated. I replayed it last year and it still feels like it came out yesterday. The game plays like absolute butter, smooth responsive controls, and an absolute blast from start to finish. Never felt dated for a single second. A game that's actually dated is the first Splinter Cell which i also replayed around the same timeframe as my MGS2 revisit and it was honestly a slog to get through. Chaos Theory on the other hand has aged gracefully. Similarly to MGS2, buttery smooth controls & movement.
I'm glad you still enjoy the game, but name one other game today that uses MGS2 style controls? Its controls were left in the dustbin of history. MGS 4 and 5 followed suit and handle like RE 4.
@@andypantsgamingthat's a different assessment to be honest. MGS2's controls were replaced not because they were dated but because a third person over the shoulder camera simply worked objectively better with the type of game Konami wanted to make. Think of it as replacing an older model of a car that still performs perfectly with a newer model which is more fuel efficient. That's how I'd describe the classic MGS2 camera/controls.
@@o27001the controls for MGS1 and 2 were really bad, I’m not sure how you think Splinter Cell 1 had bad controls, it was a bit rough but nowhere near as stiff and clumsy as the earlier MGS games, the one that perfected the controls of MGS was 4.
@@CarvedStones Mgs1's have legitimately not aged well. Mgs2 on the other hand is buttery smooth, I honestly can't comprehend why you or Andy keep saying it has aged badly. And on the topic of splinter cell, the controls themselves are not the issue. The issue is the difficulty of the game is absolutely broken, enemies in the first splinter cell were outright clairvoyant at times and don't even get me started on the dog enemies. That combined with the terrible aiming mechanics and the extremely linear corridors is what made revisiting splinter cell a complete slog to get through and these issues combined are what make the original splinter cell a much worse game to play today. Pandora tomorrow on the other hand I really enjoyed revisiting. It fixes a lot of things the first game got wrong. Chaos theory on the other hand is completely perfect. An all time GOAT, perfect difficulty balance, perfect mechanics, controls, level design, all of it was just perfect.
@@o27001 MGS2 by modern standard doesn’t live up to a timeless control scheme, especially to newcomers. There’s a reason MGS4 and PW modernized the controls a bit, even MGS3 had a bit of an awkward control scheme.
Gears of War went through the same problem Halo had to go through. Big franchise that ended off very and was loved by fans, old studios didn't want to make anymore, Microsoft had to push flagship titles with the new xbox console.
RE4 brought in in the over the shoulder perspective but not the cover. Since Uncharted came out less than a year later, I’d be curious to know what if anything changed in its development once gears came out or was even shown off. There definitely had to have been overlap in their development timelines.
As a xbox fan I don't like gears 4 and gears 5 and that gears of war is dungeon like something /gears of war for me is gears 1/2/3 even gears tactics is better than 4 and 5
How many of you have the mental fortitude to beat Gears of War 1 on Insane several times? My personal count is 3, and let me tell you, RAAM made me shit bricks.
If gears 4 and 5 is there to make the plot for gears 6 and probably future gears, it would be some amazing plot starter games. I have a hard time to accept the locust Queen comeback and her squid style appearance.
You know whats funny? They decide to make a female character and suddenly the game has to be all soft. They could have created a female character and explored how she faces the horrors of a war and come through as a soldier. Different from the way of men, but still badass and believable. In the same way that the character you mentioned is a grunt but he still cares about his wife.
Gears 1 2 3 are classics of course but gears 4 and 5 are really good as well cause everything was set up from gears 3 plus we are finally getting back story on the queen and how the locust was born.
Plus the swarm is the love child of the locust and the lambent. The swarm actually look like locust, like the actual insect, especially if you look at the jaw, legs, and arms
Good video. I disagree on the challenge part, though. GoW4 was extremely difficult on Insane. Inconceivable is actually easier. Enemies are very spongy on Insane. And don't forget those damn rushing drones that'll instagib you with melee.
It pains me that I'm the ONLY person that remembers the game Killswitch. That game in my opinion is what inspired Gears of War cover mechanic. But I still respect Gears for making it better. I know you mentioned it but people literally will say Gears did it first and don't research at all.... sad
Tbh, I had insane fun playing Gears 4 and 5 with friends, either in coop or horde mode. Gears 2 still remains one of, if not the best, 3rd person shooters of all time. But 4 and 5 aren't bad games either
I still have my original trilogy from the old days such timeless classics plus it helps when I don’t wanna spend $60 on game pass for no reason. I’m no expert player and didn’t have internet when the games were out but from my personal experience: Gears 1 was the hardest and had the darkest atmosphere Gears 2 had the best story and campaign levels Gears 3 had the best multiplayer modes and options, the campaign was slightly weaker than 2’s but still really good plus the lambent were a challenging but welcome enemy. Gears judgement was…. interesting to say the least but I still like to mess around with it sometimes I’d still rather play it than 4 or 5 Gears 4 looked nice visually but suffered from all the problems you mentioned Gears 5 was a joke with annoying characters and a story so boring that I stopped playing it halfway through and proceeded to uninstalled. RIP Gears we’ll never forget.
I disagree about it just being a game about men being men. The trilogy had some bad ass women too. Specifically, Samantha Byrne aka Bernie. Fought in the Pendulum Wars, gave Dom his angel tattoo of Maria. But i agree with a lot of the other points.
Televnovela 😂 I'm fuckin done

Beating gears 1 with my friend split screen is a core memory. Rip Anthony Carmine…
he always dies in the first 5 minutes 🤣
Im sorry for your lose brother; although not physically, he’ll always be with you 💯
Tie killed himself because of ptsd he couldn't live with the trauma the locust put him through and doms wife didnt zombify when she changed thats how she actually looked where as before dom basically had rose tinted glasses on.
Thank you for clarifying
That scene was devastating, though
Tie killed himself because his body was just a carcass. He believed in the afterlife (or reincarnation, i do ;t really remmember) so he "freed his souls" (it was on the comics)
Yeah I heard that and I was like, did op play a different gears 2 than I did? Like wuuuuut 😩😅
The same thing happened with the Halo franchise when 343 took over.
yup
With companies like Sweet Baby Inc basically having a death grip over the throats of Microsoft and other companies, we might never get a good gears game again.
Exactly
Gears of War is what converted me to Xbox. Been there ever since
Amen
I'm sorry to hear that.
Man that’s loyalty fr
how is that brand loyalty holding up?
@@Milkiy-Hazard Stronger than ever. I'm actually a Nintendo fan as well
Gears ended with the third one, for me.
Cliffy sucks it. He attacked the fans and hasn't made anything good since
@@TimeMakerManstill doesn’t take away frm his skills
Cliff was awful and took a lot of credit that didn’t belong to him. Also a super douche in real life, he was neighbor in nc. Trust me, if you ever meet him, you’ll hate him
Tai was considered 'unbreakable' by many, true...but not even someone like him could be put through Locust torture without coming out the other side wrong...
Maria on the other hand got put through an even worse form of the Locust torture where they end with lobotomy via gouging a knife into the base of the upper eyelid so the blade scrapes at the portion of the brain that makes a person who they are alongside other things like basic motor functions; its how they make obedient slaves and why she looks so dessicated by the time Marcus and Dom find her in 2
Still remember the chills from hearing that audiable “BOOM” the first time. Love Gears 1-3!!!
The sawed off shotgun is where skill in multiplayer disappeared
The coalition is the problem , they don’t deserve this game . Wait till 6 , it’s gonna be bad y’all .
Yea it sucks
I miss the Gears trilogy, but with Sweet Baby Inc. having Xbox as their client, I have no hopes for gears 6.
Yea its cooked
I was a big fan of the Gears of War games. Played 1 - Judgement. I went on an hiatus for a while cuz of adult life. I returned and picked up the latest game in the series; gears 5. And I am shocked by how everything is different. The writing is bad too. Only pro I can think of is the gore is still fine
Yo i think you need to go and play the games again lol. Maria was tortured and Lobotomised, Tai got his mind broken by torture he wasnt being turned into a locust
They started milking the fans for money.
Atmosphere gears 1.2.3 🔥🔥
Apparently this is an unpopular opinion, but I honestly thought Gears 5 was great. The graphics and gameplay significantly evolved and basically represent the pinnacle of the series. The campaign expanded on the lore and incorporated some interest open-world elements and the horde mode is BEST IN CLASS, in my opinion, with its varied classes, upgrades, and fantastic maps.
Yeah, I hated Kate when I saw her; however, even agreeing with this video I grew to like Kate and the banter from the Gears kids. I liked that 3 zone multiplayer mode they had from comp play too.
i prefer gears 2 instead of 3
If Gears of War was the father, then Winback on N64 was the grandfather. Let's not forget that fun game!
Also the game "F.E.A.R." that came out in 2005 has better AI than any modern game I've played.
So, just to clarify, gears cover system is actually a continuation of a ps2 game from 2003 called Killswitch. It's a fun, but shallow shooter from that era.
Does Winback not count as a progenitor of the 3rd person cover-based shooter?
Imagine if they had remastered Gears 2 and 3 like they did with 1
I bought Gears of War 1 on launch day back in 2006 I can't really describe how amazing that game looked and felt at the time.
There was loads of cover based shooters on PC well before gears, I guess it lead to more console clones but it was far from the first to do it well
Gears of war 1 is my all time favorite game and I adore the OG trilogy to death, making me a fan.
The first 2 games had an exciting and immersive campaign but yet again it was three that ran out of ideas and instead said “ohhh shiny explosive locusts”
In truth It went for graphics over gameplay, copying others instead of innovating and sold its soul, and no matter how hard they try, it will never be successful ever again.
“More like ten shitloads”
Only god of war has pulled this off well imo
Some of us have never played winback and it shows
Kill switch and resident evil 3 was reason gears existed. Cliffy B married gameplay of those two games and revolutionised third personshooter
Well the difference is god of war also came back as good as before with even more depth, gears didn't
Oh this video was randomly popping up in my recommended. IVery interesting. I'll be sticking around for a while if you don't mind.
Multiplayer feels the best it ever has and no more host advantage is a MASSIVE improvement, though I think they cleared that issue up in 3
But they changed and removed good weapons just like EVERY other studio that takes over for the original crew. They ALWAYS subtract and never add anything to the games
Taking out the Hammer was by far the most stupid decision they have made.
Gotta be realistic about it
I will agree with what was said here in the sense that they just pulled more of the woke agenda bullshit of just throwing an angry Woman on screen and calling it a day. So help Me if I see a disgruntled trans character be the star of the show in 6 🤣
On a more serious note they really could of made her an amazing female character. A true, strong Woman. Instead they went the lazy route and made her into a stereotype.
Emotional, bitchy and never wanting to take sound advice
I will also agree that they out right RUINED Marcus' son.

Gears Judgement: 🤐
Might be over estimating that gears of war influence When GTA was doing third person shooting long before gears. And uncharted 1 came out in 2007
Completely agree with you, you put this together well as someone that played gears from the start.
And I still get chills when riding the Rig's to land-down..😂
This was a great overview of the gears franchise grew up on it never finished gears 4 had the exact same sentiment.
I remember going through each difficulty in Gears 1 and me and one of my buddies playing split screen
Insane is so hard
Theory: why the AI got worse? In older games if the visual fidelity couldn’t be push further other areas were explored. Now marketing focuses on graphics and the development focus shifted to make beautiful games as this is how they can be sold. This is why AI does not get enough attention. It is a very complex process to make AI fun to play with. I recommend GDC panel on Doom 2016 AI (dumb it down to make it fun).
1 story 2 the enemies 3 the lack of atmesphere gears of war perfected alot of things always made newer things like choosing your path and finding tags but its still a masterpiece with potential if they add in story like the remnants of the cogs original opponent or monsters 2 big for life
I don't know if you credited whatever source you got for the footage of Gears 4, but maaaan 17:54 you start skipping through the video while recording it and I started WHEEZING
So bored of it you couldn't even watch it back fully for the vid, I CAN'T that shit's so funny
Also if you didn't properly source the footage maybe throw a link to it in the description.
Can’t wait for the original trilogy to come to ps5.
Love those games!!!
Watching him take a Theron guard bolt and live through it tells me he hasn’t gone through “that” part of the game 😐
Indeed
My problems are the swarm, the robots and finding out the locust were just science experiments. Imagine if they were aliens and they were fighting us to stop us from stealing their resources. And i liked when I use to think Marcus dad had a secret love affair with the Queen and she was possibly his mom. That would've been cool.
gears 1-3 was peak but like every other big franchises new people work on the id and the games lost their soul
Gears 4 is just like Gears of War, but with:
- better graphics
- worse writing
- worse gameplay
- worse weapons
- worse AI
- worse level design
- no boss fights
It's baffling how true the phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants" is when we're talking about the video game industry right now. And they're not even standing, they're taking a shit on the shoulders of giants. It's a crime against humanity that 2 and 3 aren't available on PC.
Exactly. I have zero nostalgia for this game and it's amazing
Hyping Gears 3 as the end of the series to only release the mediocre Judgement within a year was the start of the decline.
Gears of War went through the same problem Halo had to go through. Big franchise that ended off very and was loved by fans, old studios didn't want to make anymore, Microsoft had to push flagship titles with the new xbox console.
Here is a test for you on Gears 1 try tagging the first Berserker after using the HoD it’s cool
I played the fuck out of gears of war 1 as a kid
Hopefully the gears of war adaptation ( thats not only work on by a fan,but a competent writer ) takes the series backs to its roots.
This was an excellent video. I’d love to see you breakdown Halo in a similar fashion
RE4 brought in in the over the shoulder perspective but not the cover.
Since Uncharted came out less than a year later, I’d be curious to know what if anything changed in its development once gears came out or was even shown off. There definitely had to have been overlap in their development timelines.
Gears went wrong when they decided to continue the story after the 3rd game.
Tai wasn't being turned into a locust he was tortured and mentally destroyed and defeated.
As a xbox fan I don't like gears 4 and gears 5 and that gears of war is dungeon like something /gears of war for me is gears 1/2/3 even gears tactics is better than 4 and 5
Hard for Gears to be inspired by Fury when Fury came out in 2014 >.>
Still a good vid though, lots of praise for this old classic game
Y’all imagine how crazy a gears of war collection would be like MCC (or how bad it would be like mcc at launch)
Gears 3 did have female soldiers with Anya and Sam, but there was still a good balance to not be overly feminine.
I’m no expert player and didn’t have internet when the games were out but from my personal experience:
Gears 1 was the hardest and had the darkest atmosphere
Gears 2 had the best story and campaign levels
Gears 3 had the best multiplayer modes and options, the campaign was slightly weaker than 2’s but still really good plus the lambent were a challenging but welcome enemy.
Gears judgement was…. interesting to say the least but I still like to mess around with it sometimes I’d still rather play it than 4 or 5
Gears 4 looked nice visually but suffered from all the problems you mentioned
Gears 5 was a joke with annoying characters and a story so boring that I stopped playing it halfway through and proceeded to uninstalled.
RIP Gears we’ll never forget.
I disagree about it just being a game about men being men.
The trilogy had some bad ass women too. Specifically, Samantha Byrne aka Bernie.
Fought in the Pendulum Wars, gave Dom his angel tattoo of Maria.
But i agree with a lot of the other points.
lol dom taking cover in front of Marcus is hilarious
I played nothing but GOW3 multiplayer for a long long time, even after Gears 4 released. The matchmaking was unmatched.
Oh the irony
