  • Different Mowing Heights For Different Grasses
    Different grasses perform different at different mowing heights. Some prefer taller heights of mowing and some can tolerate shorter heights of mowing. I feel it all depends on how much you are willing to put into your lawn as to how high or low you mow.

    I would love to reel mow one day. I start the season at 1" raise the deck 1/2" increments once I start seeing turf burn from the rotary blades. Toward the end of season I try to let it get tall so it will have better protection from freezing temps. I had a guy waiting for me to get home last Friday, he wanted to know who took care of my fertilization and herbicide treatments. He then wanted to hire me. Best compliment I got that day! Pete, you are a big part of my success in the yard. Thank you sir! 🇺🇸💪

    Pete, used your TTTF for two overseeding projects so far. Having great results. Been mowing this summer between 3.5-4" and the lawn has withstood some killer heat waves and an unseasonable amount of rain (2nd rainiest July on record, close to 10"). It performs far better than the old KBG that was planted long ago. Will continue to use your product for my overseeding projects!

    Up north in the Pacific North west if you plant rye grass or it spreads with our major droughts you can easily see it the first to go dormant. And if there is minimal recovery in fall and you start clean ups around trees the grass gets all torn out. Nothing beats a good thunder storm rain every 2 weeks to keep things alive. With out that you pissing in the wind.
    You have some great looking grass your cutting.

    Pete,
    I appreciate that you’re willing to fight the Internet and lawn company norm that KBG cannot survive in the transition zone. KBG really gives a much more beautiful lawn than people give it credit for with how fine that blades are versus TTTF.
    There’s certainly too much emphasis these days in that during the summer you must mow at insanely high heights of cut, but they are just leading themselves to more disease pressure.

    Love your videos, have followed for a couple of years now. Also in North Carolina. If you could , next time you do one like this, specify what type of Ryegrass. There's the annual ryegrass and perennial ryegrass. Annual is what I use to overseed my bermuda fall through spring, it does not tolerate low mowing at all. It's like fescue as far as height. Perennial ryegrass is different and likes low mowing in cooler weather obviously lol. I made the mistake of trying to mow my annual ryegrass to low haha.

    I keep my backyard at 1in- 1.5 and its literally a mix of every cool season known to exist. Bent, TF, Rye, Kbg, fine fescue, creeping fescue, everything all the above. Most of it was existing i've only seeded a few spots that have died over the years with just the cheap big box store blend, bc I don't care about it unlike my front yard. The tall fescue handles the 1 in cut but it doesnt like it but the other grasses have blended into it and its not noticeable and in some cases especially where there's bent it has taken over and smothers it. The bent likes the 1in cut the most as it has really spread since i started keeping the back low the past few years

    Our lawn got the awesome builder grade leveling job, so the Bermuda gets cut at 2 1/2” to get a nice smooth mow without scalping high spots. We will start leveling incrementally next year. With the amount of clay in our yard, we have been focusing on following a routine program of liquids and granular products to improve the health of the lawn. Having the best yard in the neighborhood is nice, at least that’s what all of the walkers say when they pass by. It’s fun to learn and try new things to see if they work.

    Do you think KBG would mix well with tall fescue??

  • @Tundra_Guy
    @Tundra_Guy Před 3 lety +3

    You must be hammering the KBG with water to keep it looking like that in this heat. I live in the Northeast and have elite cultivars of KBG. Mine can't take the heat and that's with temps in the low to mid 80's. When it hits 90 like it has for the past few days, it wants to go dormant. I have irrigation and water at least 1.5 inches a week. I have it at 3.5" all summer. How much are you irrigating that?
    I was thinking of changing over to TTTF but from everything I've seen and read, it doesn't handle fungus well. Most channels I've seen have severe brown patch issues each summer. I know KBG is also susceptable, but I don't believe it's as bad.

    • @thomasjack4899
      @thomasjack4899 Před 3 lety +2

      I live in Iowa and we've been getting hammered this year with very high temps of over 90 with no rain. We are in an extreme drought. I water 1.5"/week and my KBG has stayed pretty green. I increase the mowing height a little and hit it with high potash fert with some slow release N in mid June and again toward end of July. I know the common wisdom is to not feed cool season turf in the summer, but feeding it during this time has always served me well.

    • @jeffreybryson
      @jeffreybryson Před 3 lety

      If you have irrigation. I would recommend the use of a stress blend during the summer. Otherwise, it'll smoke itself out.
      I cut at 3.5" with TTTF 2-3 times a week, but when we hit the heat of the summer like now, it gets a 5-0-20 fert, cut at 4" (my Honda seems to be higher at full tall) and usually just a single pass and get off of it...sometimes doesn't get mowed for 7-10 days. Between vacations and camping trips, I fell behind on watering and just letting it go dormant if it wants. If it was at 2.5", it probably be thinning out. Instead, it's a shaggy 5-6" for days...

    • @GCITurf

    Every year in the New Jersey area, grass starts going to crap. But you're saying about rye grass is really true up here. There's a whole bunch of grass it just goes dormant no matter how much I water it. It's crazy. Anyway, I'm trying to switch my lawn over more to a bluegrass fescue mix, but trial and error I guess. Maybe it doesn't have enough minerals. I'm using the humic acid, so I guess I'm just going to have to try some different things

      I just started to try an keep up with my grass this year. I bought the home about 1 1/2 ago. The old owners told me no matter what the grass won’t stay green. I tried to aerate and overseeed in the spring. Threw down Milo in late June. And tried to water. NOPE.
      I gave up and I’m killing the lawn tomorrow. I bought the TTTF Cool Blue, I’m doing a full renovation with some fresh soil and sand mix. I have Humic acid and using pre emergent too. If that fails I’m going to give up.

      @@tite732 In my humble opinion I have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood, in my humble opinion. But there's a lot of clay here - a lot of compacted soil. Doing my best. I'm going to need some more topsoil for sure, and that starts getting pricey. Looks real good in the spring though. All the way up till about the end of June and it just turns to Schiff.
      I do very well with the free emergent, combined with starter fertilizer. I put down some seed in the fall after aerating, and that stuff just makes it grow like crazy, and then any weeds that germinate in late fall and then go dormant don't sprout in the spring. My lawn is very low on weeds. Additionally, I've started taking care of my neighbor's front yard, because of borders mine.
      Anderson's makes a very small piled granular humic acid. I want to put that down in large quantities and see how it does. Additionally, I had good success with a liquid iron application. The darkest green it's ever been. Just weird what happens to the grass in July through September

      @@matthewimi That sucks. Like I said, this is really my first year at this lawn thing. I for sure dont have the best or a nice lawn in my neighborhood and its the reason why I decided try. If you havent already, I suggest you go on reddit and post this issue. There are a lot of people with great knowledge in the r/lawncare community who can help. I will admit though, my lawn was thriving in the spring after the overseed and aeration and quickly started to lose life in early June. I never followed up with any fertilizer after the first batch of starter fert for the overseed. So I dont know if that had anyting to do with it.
      It was my understanding as a noob that youre not suppose to fertilize in the summer, so by then it was a little late when I applied the Milo. I still fell my grass type and soil needs a reset becasue I truly dont know the age or care history.
      I will however reach back out to you if my renovation doesnt go as planned.
