    This well done video is by a Colorado-based firm. Their 3" height minimum is true for most cool-season grasses, but not necessarily for warm-season grasses of the southern states. Here, height depends upon turfgrass variety. Cut St. Augustine tall, but Bermuda short. Zoysia can go both ways depending upon the water and labor you want to put into it. Essentially, shorter cut lawns must be cut more frequently so that you're never removing more than 1/3 of their height. Even with my crappy St. Augustine yard I have to cut more than once every 7 days during the peak of the summer growing season. If I don't, I end up with clobbs of grass leaves smothering the lawn beneath and I end up taking. And I do sharpen my blades several times per season, but probably not every 4 cuts.
    (I don't work in the industry but years ago I did earn a horticulture degree which included a semester-long turfgrass class.)

    Awesome video. I cut my grass at 3.5 and it looks fantastic. In my younger days, I would try to cut it the shortest as possible thinking I wouldn't have to cut it as often. Since I've been doing it right for the last couple of years it does take longer but it looks great.
    I wish my neighbor cared how his yard looked. His lawn looks horrible and the blades on his lawnmower are crooked so they leave unsightly marks everywhere.
    Once after I got through cutting grass (3 1/2 hours) he gets on his lawnmower and blows grass clippings on my freshly cut yard! It pissed me off to no end. It sucks you can pick your parents and neighbors.

    This is all good advice if you live in the US, but hear in Britain the average mowing hight is between 1 and 2 inchs, and my grass at an inch short is dark green like the grass mowed at 3 inches in the video, so really It all depends on where you live and what sort of grass you have. I use a rotory Honda mower with a rear roller, beautiful stripes with no wheel marks.

    Very good information, but IMHO it's NOT that most homeowners who cut their own grass too low inadvertently set the lawnmower too low, it's that they cut shorter because they don't want to mow as OFTEN.

    • @OrganoLawn
      @OrganoLawn  Před 5 lety

      We service about 5000 customers and when we inform them that they are cutting their lawn too short they always say, "I am cutting it on the highest setting." Then we go look at their lawn mower and it is on the middle setting. Then they say, "my son cut the lawn last, he must have lowered it because I had it on the highest setting."

    You're right on all points! Also, the more expensive mowers have the ability to set the deck higher than cheaper ones. I realized this when I finally stepped up to a zero turn with a steering wheel from Cub Cadet. I have a steep bank on my lakeshore and I'm the ONLY one around that has a ***steering wheel*** zero turn in my area. Everyone that has lap bars on their zero turns end up in the lake at least once. 😉

      Agreed, I have not seen many Golf Courses at 3" (not the greens but the fairways...) - but they mow more often, When you let the grass grow high, the grass stem elongates and when you do mow you are cutting off all blades and leaving only stems, Comparing a 2" mow to a 3" mow should be done if in both cases you only cut off 1/3 the plant (Cutting the 2" lawn when it reaches 3" and cutting the 3" lawn when it is at 4.5") Only then are you comparing Apples to Apples.

    Growing up here in Phoenix I was taught to water 2x a week deeply. The Bermuda grass will spread and fill in best. Also to cut it short until it has filled in. I was taught it would help it be tolerant of times with missed watering. After it is reestablished in spring then to cut it ~2". I dont know if it is correct or not. It is just how I was taught back in the late 60s & early 70s. And now, I am moving to Iowa so have to learn how to get rid of the sticker weeds there and what to over seed with and how to care for it. I am 64 and still trying to learn and get better. Thank you for your videos.

      We are not sure about warm season grasses like the ones that grow in areas like Phoenix, but this is the correct technique for cool season grasses which you will most likely have in Iowa.

    The taller the better for the majority of grass types. This doesn’t apply to Bermuda, Zoysia, and possibly Kentucky Blue Grass. St. Augustine and Turf type tall fescue should be mowed 4 in or higher.

    Good information about lawns overall and cut height, also note:** the best mowers are push mowers with spinning blades (no motor whatsoever) that snip the grass like scissors, not a rotating blade that whacks the grass...that is bad for your turf. There is no doubt I have work harder to cut the grass, but it's like a workout... No gym membership required anymore.

      Your right...this is how sod farms cut grass. The original lawnmowers with gas engines used a rotary blade. You can still buy them. My second option would be a Toro Atomic Blade. It basically mulches the cuttings into fine clippings.

  • @peoplez129
    @peoplez129 Před 5 lety +14

    I mow once every 10 days. But no way am I going to sharpen the blades every 4 mows. Ain't nobody got time for that! In fact, you're more likely to damage your mower with edge sharp blades if you hit something hard, both the mower and the blade. Maybe doing all of that would help if you had a freshly planted lawn in the first place....but in most places, most lawns are made of weeds and other stuff. And it's not just from bad mowing practice. The closer you are to wooded areas or properties where foliage is allowed to overgrow, you're going to end up with all kinds of stray weeds and stuff in your lawn as they spread, no matter how you mow.
    Most lawns aren't freshly planted. The vast majority of lawns have been around for over a century without digging up the soil and starting from scratch. In fact, a lot of stuff is left over from the depression era where people were growing anything they could to eat. So you see lawns with all kinds of wild herbaceous plants growing in it that we just keep cut short. Which I think is actually a good thing, because if there were ever a famine, all people would have to do is let their lawns grow and they'd find all sorts of edible stuff. Grass on the other hand, is America's biggest crop, and serves no other purpose but to give property a tidy uniform look.

      I have a comment about sharpening your mower blade. First, I believe it is important to keep it sharp. Rather than sharpen a blade ever four weeks, I choose to have at least 2 if not 3 blades. Yes , it can get pricey if your own a lawn tractor with 3 blades, but, in the long run, it will save a bunch of time and keeping the mower cutting clean. We downsized to a smaller home and lot size, so I purchased a new 21" Honda self propelled mower, and with it I purchased 2 extra sets of blades. (This Honda has a two blade system.) So, I swap out the blade three times per season. I sharpen the one I took off, when I have nothing else to do. It only takes a couple minutes to remove and re install a blade set on a small mower. Sharpening and balancing a blade it not that big of a deal. I've found that a belt sander and file speeds up the process. Many years ago, I made a nice working balancing device. I just look at these things as part of taking care of the homestead. But, that's just me.

      @@CuriousKL I use Toro or Craftsman Atomic Blades. They cut even, obliterate cuttings, stay sharp, and allow the mower to burn less fuel.

  • @nodnagud
    @nodnagud Před 5 lety

    Just one quibble. The demonstration dealing with the height setting of the mower shows both front and back height adjustments being set to the fifth socket back toward the handle to raise the mower to the "correct height." That may be correct for the mower he's using but didn't work for my Toro. After using this video as a guide I tried it and it cut the first few swaths VERY SHORT. I thought my mower might have been broken but a quick look at my owners manual showed the problem. I can't speak for all TORO's but with my model you need to raise the mower by putting the front adjustment back toward the handle BUT the back wheel adjustment forward toward the front to gain a balance height. My suggestion is that he really should have cautioned to check your manual to see how to properly raise the mower height. Sorry this was so long, just trying to help.

    I only can dream of cutting our .70 acre of lawn once a week. Due to fertilizing, lawn irrigation and the periodic summer rains here in Michigan, I have to cut every 3 to 4 days. Being that I do not bag when cutting with my zero turn mower, there would be messy trails of grass if I were to let it go for a week before the next cut. I liked your video otherwise. Should I cut back on the fertilizer? We hit it with a spring fertilizer, a summer fertilizer and a winter fertilizer to give it a good start the following year.
