    I LOVE Bermuda lawns. My only complaint with Bermuda is that it looks way better, the shorter it’s cut. If you miss a week, or are keeping really short then get a lot of rain, it can get out of hand really quickly.

    That's the value of the reel mower, if you tried to do this with a traditional mower it can't be done because of the damage to the blades. I switched to the Santee Centipede from Bermuda a year ago and haven't looked back. Great channel, love your content. Stay blessed brother.

    This really makes me appreciate my old Midnight KBG, which stays green all year long- even under the snow for 5 months! It just needs that consistent water during our 2-3 months of Minnesota's hot 🔥 summers that often give us weeks at a time with no precipitation.
    I mow twice a week and make sure my sandy soil gets 1-1.5" of💧 water. Add the tiniest bit of fertilizer and it absolutely dominates the neighborhood 😀! A little spot spraying for broad 🍃 leaf weeds if I feel ambitious ensures I get compliments from passers-by and an occasional stranger will stop and ask for advice.
    Virtually all my lawncare knowledge has come from Pete, Allyn, John and a few others here on CZcams.
    Thanks again Pete!

    Transition Zone 7 here: Bermuda is the reigning suburb turf. But once temperatures get to the 90s or 100s, mowing is left to the professional or disgruntled homeowner. Watering is also half-hearted, so lawns will brown and trees wither.
    Just this morning, while "patrolling the perimeter" with the dogs (uh....the dogs enjoyed a front yard romp, untethered), I noticed that my Bermuda is still green. Deep watering twice a week does that.

    Most people think a bermuda lawn browning in the winter is a negative but I actually like it esprecailly when it first goes into dormancy. Its like a bright beige/golden color. Then in jan and feburay it starts looking a little more ugly as it starts to turn more of a dull greyish color. Now what I am taking about is a bemuda lawn thats 100 % weed free. Ive seen lots of bermuda lawns that have weeds and other cool season grasses in them and they are ugly IMO. Great video btw!

    Speaking of your water comment at 13:00…. I’ve got Bermuda in my back yard and fescue in my front yard. I have yet to turn on the irrigation to my back yard this year, even during these drought conditions (Nashville area, similar to your area). I actually accidentally did this (forgot to set up a schedule for the back yard) and the Bermuda is still as green as can be. I never realized how little Bermuda needed to be watered. Really cool!

    Pete/Jeff - About 13-14 years ago, I did a total lawn renovation....started w/ a mix of various grass varieties including Bermuda, possibly Bahia, and not sure what else.
    I did a total kill with several rounds of Roundup, tilled the soil, may have added an additional round of Roundup after tilling.
    I waited the appropriate time and then seeded w/ Bermuda. I was fortunate to get a really good stand of grass. And this was my inception period w/ respect to turf grass!
    I knew nothing about weed control....crabrass was prevalent throughout my lawn and it drove me crazy!!! I couldn't seem to find any MSMA for post-emerge kill, so at the height of my frustration....I mixed Roundup and proceeded to spot kill the crabrass (not the best of ideas....lol). As a result, I killed much of my Bermuda.
    So, I decided to kill it all off and start over. I also became aware of Prodiamine 65 WG for pre-emerge control of crabrass. Works wonderfully!!!
    But, I also decided to change to turf type fescue. I planted the big box store fescues for several years and struggled to keep them alive thru the July and Aug months in NE Arkansas. I then started purchasing the Turf Type fescues such as GCI's TTFescue and GCI's Cool Blue mix and even used a bag of Barenbrug TTF from ACE Hardware when I ran short of the GCI seed and needed something immediately to finish my yard.
    I have 15,000+ sq. ft of lawn. I have come to the realization that I will continue to struggle keeping fescue alive and looking well in the July & Aug months w/o an irrigation system. I just don't have enough faucets, hoses, sprinklers, and most of all...TIME...to give the entire square footage it's due attention!
    The prettiest turf I believe I have ever seen is what is referred to as BlueMuda....Bermuda grass verseeded w/ KY Bluegrass in the fall, or possibly perennial rye! That provides the green color year round and makes for a beautiful turf. I do understand I have to smoke the overseed grass off in the spring when the Bermuda starts to come out of dormancy so it would have the nutrients that it needs.

  • @dsfrye01
    @dsfrye01 Před 2 lety +5

    • @seankelly8902
      @seankelly8902 Před 2 lety +2

      Yep I tell customers this all the time they don’t understand why the Bermuda doesn’t thrive in shady spots it never will , if it’s only getting 6 hours of sun it may exist in a thin stand but it won’t be happy or spread .. full sun 12 hours + is ideal and Bermuda will be thick and happy

    Born and live in far west Texas and 99% of lawns are Bermuda. I had Bermuda in my backyard but ran into some issues when our trees and neighbor’s tree created a big shade canopy. Bermuda started to die off because of the shade. After researching, I decided to plant a TTTF since it tolerates shade more.
    I have to say that I love TTTF far more than the Bermuda. It just looks nicer and the color is a deeper green. Maybe it’s the change from Bermuda all of my life to fescue but I don’t think I will ever go back to Bermuda regardless of the extra watering it needs in the hot summer.

    Bermuda is simple to make beautiful, but I have so many neighbors that spend a ton of money on water and fertilizer just to wind up with a brown yard in the summer. Some water 30 minutes twice a day, every day, and you can’t change their minds. Others put down tons of fertilizer and hardly water at all. I spoon feed mine granular once a month, along with liquids, and put down 3/4” of water every 3 days once it reaches 95 degrees. I cut it at 2.5” and have a dark green lawn that’s super soft and enjoyable. It’s easy to do, you just have to educate yourself.

    • @x-man4702
      @x-man4702 Před 2 lety

      @@randyman8984
      Temperatures during the summer should not be higher than 85 and 90 during the day and 65 to 70 at night with the random heat waves. It can take several days of upper 90's and even 100's, but it can't be sustained (not for weeks on end) The lack of water in between rainfall will send KBG to sleep and if rain or irrigation doesn't occur, then it will die eventually. You can grow KBG almost anywhere in the world as long as there's irrigation and temperatures don't frequently go avobe 90 during the summer months for 3 to 4 months on average. The relentless heat and humidity of Florida, Lousiana, and most of Texas will not suit KBG at all. Better grown in east of the Mississippi River and from northern GA and north eastern SC (central and western NC as well) all the way to Canada.
