    They may be separated in time by twenty years, but the Toyota GR Yaris hot hatch and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition have much in common. For starters, they’re both out-and-out sports cars for the road that are based on the principles of rally driving.
    However, while the TME followed years of success for Mitsubishi’s Evo VI in World Rally, the new Toyota GR Yaris is a rally car with no series to race in … yet. The vicissitudes of COVID-19 mean its rallying potential is yet to be fully realised, while the storied legend of the Evo is very well known.
    But which car delivers the best experience on road? How do the Evo and GR Yaris compare?
    In today’s video, John takes a detailed look at a well-kept Evo 6.5 TME and the new GR Yaris to give you detailed insights about thes vehicles.

    I used to own an Evo and now own a GR. The Evo has a much more raw and adjustable chassis together with a stronger engine (full boost came in at 2750rpm). I still miss that car a lot. It felt like a genuine race car for the road, whereas the GR feels more geared towards overall usability but still captures some of that 90s magic.

      Never sell that thing! The best 4WD vehicle ever built imho. And for sure the 276HP figure is just a fake number. It had at least 300-310PS when new. As most of this era's JDM sport cars that showed that 276HP power figure.

      @@giorx5 Your right it probably does have more power than claimed by Mitsubishi and I'm taking your advice I will not sell =], But I think people get too hung up on power figures and/or straight line speed if that's the case they should not buy a TME.. Not saying your one of those people just speaking in general because I've read that statement about power figures many times. The TME is a joy to drive as it is from factory whether its 300PS or not I think big modifications would ruin the car and the experience. And on the plus side there's plenty of new and used cars for sale that have big power and potential like for example, Aussie V8s and German cars etc with lots more power.

    Although the TME is the one to have, the differences between the TME and the 'Regular Cooking Evo' (GSR) as you call it ,really are minimal, it sits slightly lower on uprated dampers and has the titanium compressor wheel as you say, but other than that, the body kit and TME badged seats and wheels, they're not that different at all. If you want an Evo Vi & can't afford the crazy TME prices, a well looked after GSR is much much better value for money, they don't get the praise they deserve!

    Hi John.
    By FARRRR the best GR Yaris dynamics descriptive review/er on Chasing Cars to date! Excellent. Shame about the same doors as normal car/rear track quote however lol.
    If C.C ever does a comparison review with open vs lsd's, you're the man👍
    I've gone for the uk convenience pack, Oz base + parking sensors front and rear pretty much.
    Will be changing the dunlops within minutes of collection 😉
    Gonna be my one car daily and will be leaving esc on.
    Circuit/Rallye's 2 lsd's only activate and are beneficial with esc disabled.
    Toyota knew that and deliberately used the inferior dunlops to accentuate the gap, both, pre driving psychologically, and when driven hard whilst esc is on.
    With tyres changed, it's all you need on the road, but for track regularly, the circuit/Rallye, when esc is off, is really the one to get. Especially if you plan to power drift.

      @@Dave-gl6jb Hi mate.
      Once you've changed the tyres you'll be content. It will make a big difference when gunning it😉
      In the meantime, try to drive a Rallye demonstrator and compare it firstly with esc on!
      As far as you previously mentioning wanting to do occasional trackdays, once you've changed the tyres it will be fine. Personally, I'd leave the esc on to avoid any unloaded wheels spinning up. You don't need to be setting any lap time records!
      There's loads of very fast drives to be seen preproduction with both specs on the estoril Portugal track and many of the journalists were not allowed to turn off esc!
      Yes, the circuit pack firmer suspension would on track be advantageous, but likely a little jarring as a road daily 🙃🙂

      @Johnacles Před 3 lety +2

      Hey James - thanks mate! Glad to hear you are enjoying yours. After filming this review I spoke to someone who has spent many hours testing modified GRs on track, he echoed what you said. With stock power on sticky tyres there is no need for the circuit pack’s diffs on track (ironically), or really on road.

    • @James-RJM
      @James-RJM Před 3 lety +3

      @@Johnacles Hi John. Not yet arrived, due summer.
      Drove a circuit pack demo 3 times with esc on. Loved the grip and dynamics but wasn't happy with atrocious rear 3/4 visibility issues and lack of daily use comforts and parking aids.
      Then researched much further into the standard car's true dynamics, extensively watching all open diff's reviews worldwide, knowing our uk convenience pack resolves the blind spots and extra comforts issues. Toyota uk cleverly hyped the circuit pack's lsd's. Confirmation that they only are relevant when esc is disabled made up my mind. I'll be using it on the road as a daily blast but leaving esc ON.
      GR Yaris in my view is a dynamically great and fun road car. Too much is made of it being a rally car or track hero. It's far too low for the former, a little high for the latter and would need various mods to truly excel in either 😉

      #3) You disagree with my entire comment? I'm certain whatever backwardass state you live in has 'Hooning Laws'.
      #4) What is the top speed of a GR in second gear?

      You are right. I followed an 'old' Cooper S driven like he stole it through the twisty hills recently in my BRZ and that was a stupid amount of fun, but I could imagine both of these cars would be another level in speed and grip. You could only exploit 100% of them on a track I'd say.
