GR Yaris - What the Mini GP3 should have been ?!

  • History is full of iconic rally cars homologated for road use. Could the Toyota GR Yaris be the next icon. Designed for the WRC, but due to a twist of fate it will never fulfil that design brief, however it has all the required ingredients.
The most powerful 3 cylinder engine ever made, a rear biased four wheel drive system and a 6 speed manual gearbox. It is not without faults but in the video I share my thoughts on the most exciting hot hatch to hit the roads in years.
Massive thanks to Hendy Toyota in Bournemouth for letting me play with their GR Yaris demonstrator. Give them a call if you want to experience this car as well.

Split is 60:40 to the front in normal not to the rear, lane departure is a long press on the wheel to disable. The shelf under the screen seems to hold a phone if it has a leather case but not without.
I think you summed it up really good when you said it doesn’t drive slowly well. IMT isn’t great when going slow as soon as you’re pushing on it’s great.

To my eyes/mind, this car is an instant cult classic. I've now watched several reviews and the more I see the more I want.
The three pot in the Mini Cooper is a great little engine however this Toyota three pot seems fantastic.
Having (yesterday) changed to Pilot Sport 4S tyres on my Vantage I can imagine the grip this little 4wd has.
Unfortunately, cars like this will become few and very far between, so we really have to commend Toyota for bringing this to market, though calling it a Yaris does give the wrong impression and may put off many buyers I'm sure.

First thing I turned off very very annoying but why can't you save some features after turning the car off. Silly but you get used it.
PS Had my Red GR here in Australia for almost a month and love it. I did pay 50K full price but worth every cent.
It's not perfect and with few tweaks will take it to the next level. That's what the Mod and tuners are for. A new exhaust is a must.

@@PetrolPed Hold it for 3 seconds. Done.
Back to the main question: as a former owner of a MINI GP3 and a current owner of a GR Yaris (plus a bunch of other cars, such as GP1, GP2, Focus RS Mk1, Megane R26.R, 458 Speciale and various others), I can confirm that the GR is all that the GP3 should have been. It's more fun to drive and that's all that counts (in such a car). Forget pure speed, it's all about the smile on your face when driving it! Most of the safety systems can be switched off easily or permanently (via the dealer), the mirror position becomes normal in no-time, the gearbox is indeed mega and the lack of space and the interieur quality, who cares... at least I can put the kids in the back if I want.

Great summary, what you said about the mini's was something that crossed my mind a few years back. Buy 2 write-offs (mark 1 cooper s and early all4) and try and convert the cooper into 4wd rally car for the road. Can only dream though 🤣. Agreed 100% the GR gives you that in 1 off the shelf package. Wish I had the cash to get one.

Hi Pete. Have watched many of your reviews, in particular the two re the i30N performance pack hatch and you hit the nail on the head re the bunny hopping in cool wet weather from standstill!👍
I still bought one lol even though I was craving an awd car, and after a comparison to many other small and awd manual cars, S1, RS MK 3 and Golf R 7.5. I think the rarity and bimodal exhaust sold it 😃.
However, I swiftly changed the pz4's to ps4s's, much better in the wet but still typical fwd reasonably high torque/power slip and spin. The front e-lsd is likely the reason for that hopping in the wet.
Anyhow, regarding this video. 7m25s in is INCORRECT! Simply just get the Convenience pack! No issues with phone placement and cable/lack of sat nav etc...
What is this need to regularly, immediately, and without comparison, state that the circuit pack is the only one to get??! Not everyone watching car reviews is a track enthusiast. Many just love cars and driving spiritedly on the road. Not commenting only on your review I might add.
If one has driven both the base/convenience pack and the circuit pack on dry, wet, road, track, gravel etc with esc on and off daily for about a month, longer journeys, trying to park in tiny spaces, dark countryside etc, then yes, I'll take heed of that comment, but not in this context, unless you choose to expand....
I drove the circuit pack as a demonstrator 3 times pre 3rd lockdown. The reasoning for 3 tests was the total impracticability of the GR. Awful rear back and quarter visibility, no rear wiper and once dirty, the rear window and reverse camera lense will be totally obscured.
I therefore, after watching and continuing to watch circuit pack reviews, focused on the other Australian and European base model open diff's reviews.
After many hours of analysis including many reviewers commenting on the electronic esc, when on, obscuring any difference between the open diff's and torsen lsd's, decided to get the open diff spec with the Convenience pack.
I'm buying as an all round one vehicle owner. I want fun, light weight agility, small, manual, planted awd, quick and darty.
Personally dislike the circuit pack wheels, which are also £1169 each, and the red callipers. Much prefer the enkei black gloss wheels(£400) with NON painted calipers. I'll change the dunlops to probably Goodyear f1 supersports or ps4s's like on the circuit, suspension will be better as a daily and lsd's irrelevant for my use.
I'll also benefit from rear cross traffic alert and emergency braking, parking sensors front and rear, blind spot monitor, heads up display, better stereo and speakers and built-in sat nav without an annoying cable attachment and phone flying about and will also have a constant reception. Plus discreet ambient lighting by inner door handles and a uv windscreen.
Whatever spec one chooses for their needs, it's a f..k off bespoke car that deserves the attention, in ALL specs!
