I took in a stunted rescue just like her. She didn't eat hay at all and I had to grate all her veggies otherwise she couldn't eat. She also had spurs on her teeth and had to go for a dental and it saved her life. I was told she wouldn't be eating much after the dental as her mouth would be sore, but she ate like a beast immediately after surgery and has now grown a lot.
She was only 300g at 6 months old and now is 920g at 1 year! Very proud of her recovery, she's a fighter.

I love these videos! I have never had a Guinea Pig before and was talked into by my daughter who had done her research. We got a young boy from a local animal shelter just two weeks ago. We loved him so much that we decided to get him a baby brother from the Cleveland Animal Protective League. There were two little boy babies there, and I ended up taking both of them. So I suddenly have three! My daughter and I watch all of your videos and tend to say, "Well, Saskia says...". We even took back our pet store bought habitat and built a nice large one per your recommendation from a different video. Keep up the great work!

Saskia, you and your team are a WEALTH of information. I am astonished by you and your knowledge of these creatures. I can guarantee that you know more than most exotic vets. Would you ever consider writing an e-book or something of the sort so that NEW and SEASONED guinea pig owners can refer to? Even knowing something as simple like guinea pigs won't choke on bell pepper seeds would be a major help to ALL. In pet stores, there are books on guinea pigs geared toward new pet owners, but I can guarantee it doesn't mention that vitamin C drops are denatured and made ineffective when exposed to sunlight, or that two male boars CAN be bonded, or that pet store cages 9/10 times are NOT suitable for piggies. I adore your channel, your organization, and what you and your team do each and every day. My piggies love your channel too! Showing people that piggies are NOT secondary pets. Instead, they are FAMILY members and should be loved and treated as such. Much love and admiration,

LONG story short about 6 yrs ago I rescued a lil piggy just the exact look as her from someone who was trying to feed him to a snake after two days the snake never touched him so I begged if I could take him home and he lived 4 yrs. with me . But same behavior didn't want to eat not "normal" eating behavior only thing I could possible think is he was never given "food" or the proper kinds like fruits n veg as a baby maybe if anything just pellets after the original owner got him from who knows where. Possibly he was traumatized but it took some time and lots of love he did come around to eating/acting like a "normal" piggy but def never was like ANY other I had before or after.

I found a stray cat last year and brought him to a local rescue. He had a horrible abscess on his cheek, druling especially when eating, no crunch sound when eating dry food, I told the woman who ran the rescue to have the vet check his mouth, as I was sure there was something going on. His breath smelt horrible like dead flesh. I told the woman that if he didn’t have any major health issues, I would adopt him right away, as they were very full. I’m a disabled student and I live well below the poverty line, and cannot afford thousands a year in vet bills right now. When I’m finished school in a few years, when this guy becomes an old timer, I will be able to afford the bills. Eventually he went to the vet, was neutered, abscess dealt with, and obviously they had to anesthetize him for this, he was also still feral and had to be doped up just for checkups especially after being in the car for the short drive to the vet. He was given the green light and I took him home. Well, the abscess didn’t heal, it came back even worse. I took him back to the same vet. They hadn’t looked in his mouth. After a $500 out of pocket investigation they finally realized he had multiple abscessed teeth. They said it must’ve been missed. IT MUSTVE BEEN MISSED? They obviously didn’t even look in his mouth, and completely ignored the smell of his breath and excessive drooling when they were anestetizing him and shoving a breathing tube up his nose. The surgery was going to be over $2,000. They said the problem had obviously been there for a while so luckily the rescue payed for the first surgery. They didn’t pay for the $500 investigation. It’s a year later now. When he had his mouth surgery I asked them to make sure they took all of the problem teeth. They didn’t, and I believe he is already in pain again, and will likely need another surgery soon. I brush his teeth, or what’s left of them, often. He recently went back to the vet because he had gotten in a bad fight. They again had to anesthetize him. I assumed that checking in an animals mouth during a vet visit was regular practice, something the vet does every single time, like you guys do for your piggies, well it isn’t. This is a different vet, and again they didn’t even check his mouth. Luckily the antibiotics for the fight got rid of the infection in his mouth, for now anyways, but I definitely see a major vet bill coming up in the very near future that won’t be covered by the rescue. I admire the fact that if you think something more could be going on with a piggy, you hold onto them, until they are completely recovered. I literally picked my cat up from the rescue the same day he went to the vet, he hadn’t even had a proper bath ever.

It's like she's never seen fresh veggies, nor seen hay before. A few of my rescues reacted the same way and that's my theory.

Gloria- the yearish girl puffs up when eating. High strung but easily calmed. I found her by the dumpster in a box.
Deloris- 7 weeks doesn’t but she is a pretty chill baby. Adopted at 4 weeks sick.
Edna- 6 months doesn’t puff up but again the most chill piggy ever. She just wants to nap and eat. Just adopted with her bonded mate.
Ethel- 1 year puffs up and seems to dance. She is my most high strung. Adopted recently with Edna.

That little piggy has one hell of a spark! In one of her videos, Little Adventures was talking about how her piggies sometimes puff-up to make themselves look bigger when eating to prevent another pig from stealing their food. I'm not exactly sure if that's what Patchie is doing here, but maybe she's doing that because she doesn't want you to take the syringe away from her?

Instead of grinding the food with her teeth she takes a small piece and eats it
Perhaps you could try putting some of the syringe feed in a bowl or on a bit of cardboard and see if she eats that
Also try with a softer food such as cucumber

One of my piggies lost half his tooth and would not eat. He could not eat and he tried the same way as the little one in the video. I hand fed him until the tooth grew out again as it luckily did. I spent many moments by the cage to make sure he ate it all until he did not want anymore.

She’s a funny shape as well. Such a sweetie though and was really hungry for all that critical care! I hope she grows a bit I’d have her and the other Ginger/brown aby in a second if I lived near! Hopefully with her teeth it was just neglect and she will be ok now

I have a 17 month old runt that is baby size and she's smaller than that piggy. Just because a guinea pig is tiny doesn't mean they was deprived. I had her since she was a baby. She's eats good like my other piggies do but unfortunately she never grew. She's the only pig I have like this. I believe she's rare
