    ----------------------
    This year The Rising Fighter, the Last of the Tamiya Hoppers, celebrates it's 10th anniversary. This video series is a homage to the latest model of a line of classic and affordable 2WD buggies that has brought a lot of fun and enjoyment into this world.
    The Tamiya Rising Fighter is based on the Tamiya Grasshopper II chassis, a modified Tamiya Super Hornet body, a Tamiya DT-01 Gear Box and a DT-01 Mad Fighter Wing.
    For me, this combination is the perfect starting point for a splendid "Hornet III" or a "Super Super Hornet" project. The perfect Grasshopper/Hornet and the Rising Fighter I always wanted. Basically it is screaming for some simple modifications and upgrades to bring it to a whole new Hopper-level. Can one really ask for more fun?
    In this step we replace the aluminium pinion gear with a steel pinion gear, which I consider an essential upgrade. It is easy and affordable and has a tremendous effect on your transmission's durability and smoothness.
    The gearboxes of the Tamiya DT Buggy series (The DT-01 and the DT-02/03 gearbox) has two options for pinion gears. Some would shake their heads at Tamiya for only providing two different gear ratio options, but I consider this a bullet proof system for youngsters just starting in the hobby, and want to learn, step by step. This way anyone can learn about gear ratios without having too many choices or having to think about setting up the perfect gear mesh (yet). Let's remember, the DT series was never intended for senior hobbyists, but is instead affordable entry-level hobby-grade buggies.
    The Tamiya Rising Fighter comes stock with the small 17T pinion. While changing the stock aluminium pinion to a steel pinion is an essential upgrade, installing the larger 19T pinion cannot be considered an upgrade. Instead it is a personal choice. A larger pinion will provide more top speed (like driving a real car in a higher gear, like the third or fourth) but a smaller pinion will provide more acceleration and torque (like driving a real car in a low gear, like the first or second). The choice is yours. The 17T would definitly be a good choice for rough off road terrain and small tracks, while the 19T pinion a good choice for flat off road surfaces, tarmac or large tracks. If one desires a little extra top speed a 19T pinion gear is the perfect and affordable way to start, before even thinking about buying new expensive motors.
    For this unit I chose a 19T pinion and since I had a Tamiya Sport Tuned Motor lying around, I decided to use that one too. This 23T "Black Can" provides a little extra RPM (which means it is a little faster) compared to the stock 27T "Silver Can". I'm not going for crazy fast speed (let's remember this is a small and very light 2WD buggy with a 1988 chassis design and a hard body) but a little extra speed, without spending a lot of money, would be nice.
    Hope you found this installation video useful or/and interesting! The video is purely intended for viewers with an interest in the Tamiya Grasshopper/Hornet legacy or/and the Tamiya Rising Fighter.

      Yeah, I think I got a top speed test with it after the upgrade. With a 23T motor (black sport tuned).

      Thanks, Charlie! Ahh, need a couple of steps more. Took some other entry-level Tamiyas out today for speed runs. Crazy speed. We almost hit 30 kmph :-) ha ha. Coming up on Tuesdays!

    Two fantastic upgrades Nordic RC Visions! The steel pinion is essential in my opinion - no nasty grey mess in the gearbox. With the Sport Tuned motor and the extra 2 pinion teeth you should see a healthy top speed gain - less acceleration, but then the standard setup gives too much wheelspin anyway, another great vid and another thumbs up!! :-)

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 6 lety

      Thanks! Yeah, the steel pinion is a simple but important step. Still looking forward to what's inside my TT-02B. And yes, I think all the DTs are good to go with a 19T, unless there's a crazy motor installed. That said I've never tried it with a DT-01 gearbox. Looking forward trying it out ! Thanks for watching and the support, Mark!

    Running the same set up with the sport tuned motor , my friend she flies with ampro parts as well to help stability

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 6 lety

      Sweet! Looking forward trying it out. A bit afraid she will be too fast (for this kind of buggy) but I lowered the ride height with Amoro parts so hopefully she will not flip too easily :-) Thanks for watching, Keith.

    Sweet! As of right now I'm building a tamiya mad bull. I'm on the painting process already. This beast will be ready soon. I was thinking of putting the torque tuned motor but decided to upgrade to that in the future. Overall great video.👍

      @NordicRC  Před 6 lety

      Sweet too! Love the Mad Bull. That's a genuine Hopper. Yeah, upgrade's can wait. Looking forward for some mad hoppin' on your channel. Thanks for the feedback, bro!

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 6 lety

      Yeah, for this kind of small 2WD old fashin design buggy she will probably be a bit too fast. Looking forward tryin' it out. Will definily do both a running video and a proper speed run as soon as she is done :-) (need a bit more)

  • @jdpasltrains

    Excellent video. People need to know about threadlock is important at 2:10 for pinion.

    • @NordicRC

      Yeah, Steel Pinion and Threadlock. Almost bulletproof pinion :-) Thanks, buddy!

    Hi, what ESC are you using? My RF came with TBLE02S, I thought that could only run 25T and higher?

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 5 lety

      If I remember correctly, a TEU-105BK. Pretty much the same 60A ESC as the TBLE-02S, just without the brushless option. Both are specified to a max. Sport Tuned. So you can easily hook up a 23T or 25T. To be honest, Tamiya is very conservative. Seen a lot of guys running their TEU's and TBLE's with less than a 23T :-) But of course warranty is broken if you do it.

    @hollyhillrc Před 6 lety +1

    Good advice about the degreasing. The grease in the rear gear housing of my Prerunner has gone a metallic colour and needs changing. What would you recommend to clean everything with, and what grease to use after. Thanks Mikael : ))

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 6 lety +1

      Usually I just use some motor cleaner (not sure if it is actually called that in English, but it's the stuff for your 1/1 car). Don't even know if it's good for the plastic, but it is fast and efficient. If patience is the way to go, it is actually possible to get it off with a tooth brush and some normal dish soap. I just use the Tamiya Ceramic Grease or some silicone grease. I'm sure there is a much cheaper grease available :-)

    • @hollyhillrc
      @hollyhillrc Před 6 lety +1

      Thank You : )

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 6 lety +1

      Sorry I couldn't help more

    • @hollyhillrc
      @hollyhillrc Před 6 lety +1

      On the contrary, you have been very helpful. I don't have any motor cleaner, but I do have washing up liquid, hot water and a toolbox full of old toothbrushes, and plenty of time. So I will start scrubbing : ))

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 6 lety

      Holly Hill RC Hope you will succeed :-) Tell me how it went. Been a while since I did it. Once you’ve tried some degreasing motor cleaners it’s hard to go back. I just use some from the local gas station. Not the cheapest, but so easy. For the inside of the gear box (not the gears) I’ve recently just started wiping excessive grease off with a cloth. Used to degrease and clean it up completely, but there’s really no point.
