  • There are a lot of Tamiya RC cars that are truly special to a lot of RC enthusiasts and with the rereleases, many are enjoying these cars again. One of the latest re-releases is the Wild One Off-Roader found here: snp.link/1add2886. This 2WD was one of the last realistic dune buggies released from Tamiya and may be why it’s special to so many people. This newest release has a special twist though. Tamiya teamed up with Jun Watanabe’s brand "BLOCKHEAD MOTORS” for the cool graphics work you see on the buggy. This is one Tamiya kit you don’t want to miss if you have memories about the buggy or you’ve been thinking about getting a vintage style kit to drive. Once you see Greg drive this buggy, you’ll know why this buggy is one to have!

I absolutely love these rereleases. They bring back the cool in RC just like classic muscle cars from the 60’s do. Thanks!

Loved how they looked back in the day. Used to race against them at Jackson Hobbies Track in NJ. But we were "RC-10 snobs" at the time and used to mock the tamiyas for their lack of suspension travel and loud gearboxes. A few years later, the "Ultima snobs" mocked us for the same reasons, and then the "JRX-2 snobs" mocked all of us! LOL! Miss those days of rivalries!

This makes me want to bring my original out of storage, I did get one back in 1985, ran the dog out of it at the local track. The look of a real buggy was the selling point. Great video.

Great review! I’ve returned to RC after over 30 years now that my son is old enough to appreciate it. I’ve always loved Tamiya’s attention to detail and this Wild One tops my list of vintage buys! The realistic look of it is awesome!

The original was my first hobby grade rc. When I finally saved up enough for a grasshopper my dad told me he had a friend selling a used Wild One, RC10 & Mugen Bulldog 2. I bought the Wild One (with a little help) and my dad ended up getting the other 2. Awesome memories, great car! I didn't realize it was popular enough for a re release.
This one has an interesting color scheme. I like the dogbone upgrade over the hex shafts.

My buddies & myself built the real full size of this buggy; 2 wheel drive w/Volkswagen engines. Put sand paddle tires on the back & similar tires in the front. Then headed to Pismo Beach, CA for the weekend. I was 24 & married then, 1980. Brings back a lot of memories.

  • @johnsamu
    @johnsamu Před 2 lety +5

I owned a "Wild One" a looooong time ago when I myself still was a wild one 😉
It was great fun but it had its weak spots especially in the suspension just because it was made more "realistic".
In the less realistic ones the suspension can be beefed up without looking at cabin size fuel tank etc

I had the re-release fast attack vehicle years ago and I absolutely loved it! Even with the pogo stick suspension it handled really well and was so much fun to watch and admire driving around. It was also suprising reliable and durable concidering it's a vintage design. My only hope is that I can get another one of these buggies and enjoy it like I used to. Thank you for reviewing this one

As I just wrote above to the OP and a reply to another poster too, that, before I had a Sandscorcher 1979/80, two of my mate's had a Lamborghini Cheetah and the Fast Attack Vehicle. I always felt that they were lots of fun and drove well too - despite being basic. I nearly bought a mint and boxed original a year or two back - I would have wanted to build it and use it and being mint and boxed, I kinda didn't have the heart to. The Sandscorchers could be a handful on tarmac. I modified the front suspension (it could also have the original retro fitted too - I liked it as it was almost scale but didn't handle great back then). I've all the parts to rebuild that car - I must get around to it, I've also got the original box too, buried in the loft too. Sadly I sold my Wild One - I loved that car.

This is exactly the type of buggy that Tamiya does best. The only trouble is, they haven't repeated the success of the 80's and 90's buggies in recent times and are simply relying on re-releases. Here's an idea, why don't Tamiya get a licensing deal in place with someone like Funco Motorsports or even one of the Extreme-E teams and design a modern scale realistic sand rail or Dakar style buggy for new generations of fans to appreciate?

Back in the day (for me 1979 - 1988/89), us greybeards, started off with Sandscorchers and Rough Riders (some lucky lads had the earlier Tamiya cars such as the Lamborghini Cheatah) etc. Then we moved onto Wild One's, Foxes etc. Lots of fun and early on we chewed up steering servos for fun in the Sandscorchers, then servo savers came along, as did replacement uprated drive shafts and gears (for various third generation Tamiya off road cars) etc making these cars nigh on perfect near scale cars. Then the Fox and various Mardave cars came out and went up a notch or two in terms of handling and performance, and by that time there was four wheel drive too. Happier times in many ways😊👍

Great video, stunning little car - shame that there are still a few short falls. Tamiya are very good when they're very, very good, but just sometimes they're horrid. It'll be interesting to see how the driveshafts and metal gears hold up. Having said that, they are a hoot to drive! I love that they oversteer with that front wheel/tyre combo, they're so much fun with 2WD too.
I loved mine, back in the day, circa 1984/85. I tweaked the car; bearing races throughout, built it carefully, up rated drive shafts and up rated gears (back in the day stock drive shafts and gears wore and broke very quickly), I ran-it-in etc etc. It flew and it looked scale. I painted the driver wearing the same metallic paint scheme helmet etc as my own motorcycle helmet. Wish I'd never sold it now. Almost too fast for an old greybeard like me these days, rock crawlers are a lot more sedate😄😄

I'd really love some Tamiya... and my son wants to get a TT drift car, so we will likely start with a TT or 2... but I can't help think they have a HUGE opening to not just re-release the old kits, but to do minor updates to make them better but still keep the style and character of the old nostalgic models.... or release a new, modern Mk2 of some of them... use the names, and style/livery, and release a modern kit 2wd monster truck with beetle or willy or pumpkin or lunchbox.... a more modern buggy with grasshopper of fighter livery and namesake... etc...
Hard to understand why there isn't a lot of NEW innovation aside from mainly the touring cars .... there's soooo much room to use their heritage to add another new generation of kids having a Tamita kit be their intro to the hobby... but they just recycle the old stuff without even updating them, let alone offer much as far as new, more modern kits.... there's no reason they aren't capable of making a few nice modernized kits...
I keep KINDA wanting to buy some Tamiyas, but never pull the trigger, just like I never never in the past. I think are modern kit with better performance and more modern suspension would really sell. Tempted to buy a Neo Fighter... if it came with oil shocks and bearings I likely would...definitely of it had a bit more modern plastics in some places, or an updated gearbox like Kyosho ReRe kits. ....even if it meant 200$ or even a bit more for the kit.
Rant over, on to look at other kits, and keep only kinda wanting something Tamiya....
