Just bought the Sand Scorcher. I'm 56. I had one when I was a kid and loved it. You don't stop having fun because you get old. You get old because you stop having fun.
Sand Scorcher is one of my favourites. Good choice ;)
haha funny^^ Men just don´t grow up, they just grow old... and I believe that little phrase to be true:)))
The best mantra!
Well said. At 49 I’m still having a blast. I Autocross a C5 Z06 and am obviously looking at this RC car video. Plenty of other hobbies keeping my mind and body as youthful as can be.
Tamiya has the absoloute BEST box art ever.
Agree 👌
Respect to Tamiya for edging ever closer to 1990s standards of technology.
Yes… we may soon be into the millennium 😁
I annoyed several people laughing far too loud at this comment.
😂😂😂
You know, it might be old, but it`s a recipe that has worked for them since the 70`s and 80`s, an example is the Hornet, my first hobby grade RC car, it was a fun entry level RC 40 years ago, and it`s a fun entry level RC today, Tamiya has been a beloved brand in RC for a LONG time, and I suspect they will continue to be just that for a long time to come ;)
I still have a list of at least 10 Tamiya cars I still want, not because they`re better than Arrma or any of the other extreme bashers, but because they`re quirky and fun.
Also, no force on heaven or earth will ever make me buy "HPIjustbrokefornoreason and come with front axles too short and the spur gear held in place by soft plastic fastened by machine screws in soft plastic (moronic design) like the RS3 sport Flux that`s broken out of the box and literally cannot be fixed because the motor is stuck to the motor mount and the motor mount has pre-stripped hex screws that either just rotate or are completely stuck"
Literal garbage.
Or Trash`ass ever again, where you`re better off buying a chassis and ALL the rest as upgrade parts from other companies.
Who sells a 3-400 dollar RC car with a powerful brushless motor and PLASTIC axles smh, JUST to sell new axles is why..
Tamiya might be oldfashioned, but it`s dependable and fun, and that`s better than extreme performance for 5 minutes in many people`s minds.
@@TomleyRC😂
The 'tire sniff' is truly one of the unappreciated pleasures of the new-build.
Yes… the best bit 😅
💯
Tip for doing the snap rings I've always used, I pull out a clear plastic bag that's large enough for the part, tool and my hands and do the assembly inside the bag. Then on the off chance it "pings" and shoots off it will almost definitely end up inside the bag instead of lost in the void. I do this for anything I'm building/assembling that is small and has a part under tension like a spring, snap ring, etc. Works a treat and has saved my butt many times for just the cost of a ziploc gallon freezer bag. This buggy reminds me of the Grasshopper I had when I was a kid nearly forty years ago, I might have to order one of these!
ha! lost one last night. Thanks for the tip!
So good to see a Tamiya modern long travel buggy. Rather that the usual floor scrapers.
Yes 👌
It was 1982. I was 9 years old and I had saved up enough money raking the neighbors' leaves and mowing their lawns to purchase the Tamiya Rough Rider. I spent at least a week building it and painting the body. Putting the decals and lights all in the right spots. I had never spent that much time on a body before as I was not really into model making, but I did love RC cars and I thought this thing would look so cool. -- It's all done and while I know it's for the dirt I just wanted to do a couple quick passes on my street before my dad came home to drive me somewhere I could really use it.-- I got a little too excited and gunned it on the last run. It rolled about 87,000 times ... or at least it seemed the way to my 9 year old brain. What were once perfectly aligned decals, smooth paint and beautifully mounted lights ... were all shaved off, broken or torn. I remember even one of the "driver roll bars" snapped. -- Boy did I learn a lesson that day. I've yet to ever invest more than minutes on painting a body since. -- Loved the video ... but it was also triggering. :)
You have reminded me why I fell out of love with RC cars & that is that they break every time you take them out! 💚🇬🇧🌱
My associated rig is the only thing I own that doesn’t do that
Really good to see a Tamiya kit that is up-to-date with Hex hardware, decent shocks and bearings! Makes them much better value for such small changes. Hopefully it's a sign of them waking up to the fact that relying on Nostalgia for sales isn't good long-term. Tamiya have felt like a sleeping giant for a very long time now, if they can produce more kits to this type of standard (and better) then they can easily lead the market for quality scale cars. Leave the big stuff to the others and focus on their core strengths. A decent carpet racer, crawler and Touring car chassis to this level would be mint.
Yes, fingers crossed we get some more new stuff
When you say make better quality kits do you mean chassis + scale shell kit?
Honestly i would be ok with minimal elecs too. But ya chassis and body would keep cost down to make it more noticable on the market. They make a type R for 150 that is pretty nice. But it doesnt have body or elecs and gears
I have several Tamiya models, they are the Tamiya Hornet, Tamiya Super Hornet, Tamiya Grasshopper, Tamiya Fast Attack Vehicle. I replaced all of the nylon bearings with steel bearings, added RS-540 enginges to all of the above models and the speed, handling and overall smoothness of the ride is incredible. Next thing I want to do is swap most of the brushed RS-540 engines for either Traxxas 550 engines or brushless and the speed controllers, so I can run LiPo batteries.
@@keeganlong8073the TBLE speed controllers included in the new Tamiya kits I bought handles both brushed and brushless, as well as NiMH and Lipo. Lunchbox and Pajero for example. Ball bearings is a must, as you write. When I was a kid I made brass bearings in the lathe as I could not afford ball bearings. 😊
The speed/handling on 2s looks smooth and controlled,
Old school styling with modern engineering 👌 😎
Yes. I wanted to run it a bit more, but ran out of time as I am away for a few days now
Wish they still made the Rough Rider. My dad had that car when I was around 4 years old and I still remember the incredible excitement when he let me drive it. Years later he gave it to me when I was old enough (around 8) to not wreck it right away. I still remember that clear plastic body.
Excellent video! I really appreciate the attention to detail, the nice camera angles, and the info on the kit. Well done, and beautiful car!
Definitely looks great and love the colour you painted it. Great video!
Reminds me of my Frog from the 80's. Classic Tamiya build.
Sweet build Phil! Very well done, the green really pops!
Beautiful buggy. Props to Tamiya!
Wow this took me back to one that I made with my Dad about 40 years ago! Thanks for the nostalgia. Great video, that looks a great buggy.
Always loved the look of the old school buggies.
Me too
Grew up on Tamiya RC kits, this is so freak'n awesome to see! I'll be eagerly watching what Tamiya do going forward.
That's a real RC Kicks quality build right there mate! Looks amazing!!!
Awesome build. Love the colour choice. (Grasshopper Vibes)
Can't wait to see the speed runs !
amazing buggy! superb build!
Love the chalk paint on the tires, looks incredible
I had several Tamiya buggies in the 80's.. great fun .. this looks really good too
Great review as always. loved what you did with it. It looks really balanced on all those little jumps. Really nimble and nice landings. This is the first time I've seen someone put a decent motor esc combo in it. Nice to see it work so smoothly. Very very good.
I just ordered one from Modelsport :D. Bit of a wait now but I don't mind. Something to look forward to :)
Wow, so cool. My Dad raced buggies back in the 80’s and remember wanting an RC just like this
Great video. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. My first "real" RC car was a Tamiya Hornet that I saved up for when I was 14... almost 40 years ago! Awesome to see Tamiya still making quality kits that you need to assemble.
What a freaking beautiful buggy, Phil! Looks fantastic indeed! 😃
Great ride and review!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks mate. Really enjoyed the build
Great video. My first Tamiya kit was an XR311 from early 80's which was a 3 day build and used to break torsion bars for fun. Later had a Holiday Buggy, still in loft I think. Then got 8nto boats and amphibians. Watching this made me want to revisit my youth although always enjoyed the build and painting them as much as running it. 👍
That green. It is the pefect clour for this build 🤩
Excellent job Phil. Looks really nice 🙂👍🏼
Thanks for sharing & taking us on your journey.Wow, awesome buggy. Hex hardware from Tamiya...👏🏽 Reminds me of the Rough Rider ito looks. Runs fabulous too...👌🏽
That's a beautiful buggy, love the scale drivers head🤙. Very cool looking RC 😎
Great Build Phil, Looks the Biz & runs so well with that copperhead set up !
Very tempted, could see how happy you were throughout the whole build, says it all really mate & yes i agree, most certainly the best Tamiya kit for a very long time !
Keep up your great work mate, always look forward to your new release videos.
stay safe my friend
🤜🏼🤛🏼
Thanks mate… appreciate it 🤘
Great video.
That gravel patch looked fun for a first drive.
Cheers.
I want one really badly, that thing looks so awesome.
I've never owned a Tamiya (but always wanted one as a kid!) and I'd been looking at this for a while. Watching this video pushed me over the edge I've just bought one (on eBay from a German seller but looks legit). Can't wait to make some free time and build this kit!
Another good Build, and excellent editing Tom!!
Cheers dude
nicely built! and definitely the best 2WD Tamiya buggy for a long time.
you drove that car like a pro, loved the long drift in the dirt. Nice!!!
Great to see you building a Tamiya again, Phil! I could tell from your voice that you really, really like this one! Love the paint choice, I think you nailed it! So pleased you didn't crash it on the first run, it really is a beauty and too good to smash up. I think you might be right about it being the best in 40 years, although (apart from the looks) the TD4 is on the same level in terms of plastics, hardware and design. Love the way mine drives. Looking forward to see where you go with this one, mate. Enjoy! 😎😎👍👍
Cheers Mark. It was such a nice build… not to complicated, but complex enough to get some pleasure out of finishing it. Loved driving it… but the dear old British weather, and a trip away with family cut my driving time down. Looking forward to getting it out on the sand!
@@TomleyRC Sounds great, Phil, both the build and the drive. Hope to be able to get one when funds allow. I know what you mean about the weather, where did our summer go?!?!?! Hope you get chance to get it out again soon for at least 3 minutes (and so does your wife!!) 🤣🤣👍👍
best in 40 years ? If we rewrite history you mean ?
There's something awesome about any Tamiya build, and that came out so nice (you've got me at it now!!).
There's also something about 2wd Tamiya cars. Wicked. 😎👍🏻
I ordered myself one in late June was told end of July .. which it’s still not here but excited about it .. Thank you for the build and run
Absolutely wonderful. What better way to forget all your problems than just building a tamiya bbx? Sometimes, you just need to switch off. l am glad you have featured this one l have ordered one bro bbx 😊 ❤Thankyou.
What a great buggy. Most videos don't make me want to go out and buy the product but this video for sure made me want one lol.
I use to own a Tamiya Frog and Hornet. I enjoyed it back in my high school years.
Excellent job Phil love the colour choice mate! Tamiya hit the nail on the head with this release!
Thanks mate… and yeah, they did good
Gorgeous build, sir! Makes me wanna consider a Tamiya again! Haven't had one since the early 90's... Well done!!
Thanks mate 👌
why?
Green painting is so great !
That green is the best color for it. Wow! Nice job
I owned a Wild Willy, and my mate got a Hornet and a SuperChamp in the eighties.Glad to see Tamiya still releasing such nice models like this one in 2023 !
Yeah it looks like an old Tamiya but it's all new. Love it. You did a great job on that Phil 👍👍👍
Yes… bit like a Resto Mod
That was a rewarding build for you and for me to watch. Very relaxing video. Job well done. Cheers from Pittsburgh!
Thanks mate. Appreciate it
@@TomleyRC You're welcome
Love it. I remember building and painting my Tamiya Hornet in the 80's as a kid. Still in the loft somewhere!!!
Nice throwback from Tamiya too, with the same red-orange-yellow decal stripes that the Hornet had.
Thanks for showing. This car's a beauty. The proportions a great and it looks bigger than their other buggies. One tging I don't understand is the decision to the trailing arms at the rear suspension. Some short course trucks, have them too, I know. But this is a buggy and those arms were out even in the last 80s.
Yes, it’s slightly longer than the SRBs by the looks of it
That driver is the same one I got with my 1983 Racing Buggy Sand Scorcher and it used hex drive fasteners, all aluminum suspension and oil-filled shocks as well. Its still running today. From what you say it would seem Tamiya are getting back to their roots. Best hobby I ever had.
Carrot Top?
I had one too, bugger when the grub screws threaded though :) thank god for having small taps for the fromt suspension arms :)
I had a sand scorcher in 85 ish, pretty sure it didnt have oil filled shocks and was plastic..
Wow, that is a really nice looking car. Enjoyed the build as well.
Cheers mate
Just tripped over this video. I and my work mates used to build, tune and race Tamiya cars back in the 80's. Looks like much has changed.
Love the green. Good choice. Great looking buggy
Brother I laughed so hard when you smelled the tires and you were surprised and said “ooo that’s a great tire!!” 😂😂😂
Haha
Brilliant mate!
Wow amazing build. I have to get me one now!
Love that color!!!
Loved watching this, great Sunday afternoon entertainment
Cheers dude
I never really watch build montages on CZcams, they’re boring and I’ve just seen too many but I actually happily watched this one. I liked how you edited it
Yes, I am very aware of how boring build videos can be. This was about 3 or 4 days cut down to around 8 minutes :)
Tamiya has always been number 1 in my opinion.. the fun of painting the drivers, the hop ups available, the cars just have character that you don’t forget.
I will always remember by Tamiya hornet, had a dozen cars from other manufacturers that are quicker in all respects but I can’t remember what they were…
My fav was the Super Champ. The Frog ate the differentials if you added a good upgraded motor.. Glad to see Tamiya on the scene again.
That's one beautiful looking car
Very nice Phil. A modern, non reproduction buggy from Tamiya? Makes me wonder if All the old engineers finally retired and now have new engineers born in the 90’s and y2k running the show now. Tamiya fans, put on your seatbelts, we are leaping 30+ into the future!🚀
Yeah and those old engineers took all their philips screwdrivers back home 😊
Yes maybe haha… let’s see what the next year or 2 brings us!
@@TomleyRC sounds good😝👍🏻
Can not wait to see the speed runs will be a fun and good video as always 😅
I'm absolutely not a Tamiya fan, but this is the first time I've seen something by them I've really wanted. Absolutely think you chose the right green for it and rate the green roof!
Not a Tamiya fan? Shame on you! lol
the green looks awesome... very nice build
Yes, agree
Looks Great Mate! 👍 can't wait till I get my new Hornet next week. Loved Tamiya when I was a kid. Oh I'm excited
Oh man I only just today brought myself a Tamiya Fox and a Tamiya LUNCHBOX. Now I'm gonna have to buy myself a BBX 01 myself.👍 Looks awesome to Phil.👌💪
This video is the heart and soul of the hobby for people like me, who's first good RC was a Tamiya kit. It's not breaking speed records or flying to the moon (yet) but It's genuine fun to drive around.
awesome build tom mate love a tamiya my step dad got me into tamiya back in the day
awesome rcs
love the build mate
Yeah, they are one of the companies a lot of people remember from back in the day
Dude! It looks awesome in that green! You have the suspension set up mint!m One bounce. Now I need one. Cheers!
hey phil you should check out the tamiya xv01! its imo the best 1/10 on road chassis ever made. its an AWD, front motor, sealed belt driven rally car. theres no other chassis out there that handles quite like it. upgrade the front suspension blocks to aluminum and the chassis is pretty much bulletproof.
Awesome retro look!!
loved your applauds for the hex screw 😃
Really nice build, look forward to seeing it at the beach ⛱️⛱️👍🏻👍🏻
Me too!
Dang, been looking for a Tamiya to build, looks like this will be it! Thanks for the review
It’s a good retro ‘modern’ RC Buggy
Massive scissors! They just caught my eye, great vid, I've been waiting to see how the BBX rolls out 👍
memories of my Tamiya Frog from the 80's and a Beaties Hold All.
Wicked video this tamiya bbx looks epic i just recently built the king yellow it was a fun build
A lot of fun as always! Great looking RC!
😎👌
I have wanted one of these since I saw it online. I’m a vintage Kyosho guy, but this will be my first Tamiya.
Great review on this one.
Looks great in that green.
Awesome!! Great choice going with green, I love it!!
Cheers Wayne
Great build top job love the colour
Cheers mate
Your enthusiasm is contagious. My first car was a Grasshopper. I remember making my own suspension upgrades and added a 540 motor. 35 years ago. 😂
Thanks dude. 540 motor was a popular upgrade for the Grasshopper
You did look like you really enjoyed this build. I also have the Grasshopper.
looks awesome
I have been in with tamiya since 1989 and this is a great new platform.
Agree… really nice to see a modern ‘old school’ style buggy
cool.. so cool. I had the Beetle and Rough Rider when I was young.
Definitely a very very good kit
Thanks tomley I’ve built this with my 6yo he got it for his birthday and it took us 3 months to do together around my work and his school. Has lots of power and I crash it more than he does. He chose red and number 95 as a tribute to his favourite movie character! I wasn’t sure the colour combo would work with the decals but it looks great!
brings back late 80s tamiya memories..
Looks like an Associated RC10 from back in the day. That was a great RC car.
Great build !!
Cheers dude
My local shop has one of these in stock but I need to see your speed run videos before I pull the trigger. I know that each build is different depending on electronics but I happen to have that same exact setup that I took out of my trashed speed run car and was thinking of putting it in there. I just want to see how it preforms before I buy another esc motor combo. Or maybe I will get something different to put it in if the buggy doesn't preform well. I know it is an off road buggy but everyone likes a bit of speed now and then lol. Keep up the good work. I love you videos and you actually got me into RC! I am 40 so I have a bit of learning to do but your channel has helped out a lot. Cheers!
