So Much CHEAPER than a Traxxas or Arrma! Why?

- Decent RC Cars are expensive, but this NEW FTX Apache so much cheaper than a Traxxas Slash or Arrma Senton. Are they overpriced?
*motor is labelled wrong. It’s not a 3665 & May not be 2900kv. It is as labelled in the box and website (3652 2500kv)

Update. The motor size and Kv looks to be 3652 2500kv, as the box says. End plate looks to be a mistake. I’ve let FTX know the mistake.
Shame, still.. Good for Bragging rights!.."My KV's bigger than Yours" 😊
so even worse that it cogs then. didn't you stick a 3900kv 3650 in a 1/10 ftx a while back? and u were running it in grass. did they change the gear ratio?
Edit - it was a 4500kv 3650 in an FTX Zorro on your brushless conversion guide, 2000kv more
Edit again - so yeah the ramraider is 8.3:1 with a 2500kv motor, the carnage was 11.2:1 with a 2700kv
In the US the Senton is $329, the Slash vxl is $399 and the FTX Apache is $369
@shadyhazza Its the pants ESC, stick a hobbywing 10bl120 and no cogging. Easy £30 fix ❤❤ awesome truck now mine is
Its more expensive than Arrma in the United States
A couple pinions to adjust the gearing are a lot less than a battery. You really do a solid review on these more budget vehicles, pointing out the good and the bad. Also really good cinematography to go with it.
my favorite budget truck was the DHK Hunter back when Hobby People was alive and well. Same platform as the Turnigy Trooper and we all know how legendary that truck is.
Miss those so much!!
The chingaderis below the front facia is called a lower valance buddy. I'm actually really impressed with the way this thing behaves. It doesn't sound like a dog eating tortilla chips every time it lands or goes over some gravel. The suspension geometry seems to be squared away, as well as the coilovers seem to have the correct valving and oil viscosity which we all know is extremely rare in "budget" r/c cars. I'd say this one's a win 100%. Gonna buy one when I get home. I'll order everything I need to run 4s as well because, well like you said we NEED 50mph on 3 inch long grass. When in doubt, throttle out.
I think the most interesting thing about that truck is the chassis layout. There is so much room for activities as far as upgrading electronics. I don’t know why Traxxas can’t figure that out. You have to shoe horn in everything into those chassis’s. I see a nice Max 8 G2 and the 4S motor just slipping right in there.
FYI the plural of chassis is also chassis!
Definitely good value compared to the standard alternatives
Dumb comment
It's good but there's an obvious difference in quality....It's no as balanced always turning over...
@@mattyghost3409
Slash 4x4 had the same issue before the LCG version came out. It's due to how high up the chassis is.
I'm finally in a position to get back into doing the things I love and I'm so glad your still making videos 🤙
Nice!
awesome review, am looking at Sentons... but this is now a contender. Plus I like FTX for being the underdog that's becoming a big dog.
Thanks for the upload 👍🍺🇬🇧
Got mine on order, getting back into the hobby after a few years. Had a few different r/c's but wanted something cheap to run about with. Looks a good decision.
Also the Helion Ivitcus yup the a arms are off the Dominus 10 TR great rig it was my very first rc car
1:54 it’s an air dam/valence, they are used to reduce drag on real trophy truck and off-road vehicles that have a sort of truck look to them and in Prerunner builds too when they chop most of the front bumper off for clearance with an off-road bumper
I've been waiting for this to be reviewed! Such a great little truck
Price range for what you get is spot on Phil. Value for money definitely.
I paid £225 for a used traxxas slash 4x4 last year good condition but no lipo and no charger.
I do love my senton though. I think I can get the brushed senton to 35 with a 3s high C.
These do look super cool! I would like to see more FTX like the 28th scale or the rally hoon. They look like the wl toys but 40 bucks.
It would be really interesting to see a long term test on one of these. We know the Arrma Senton is a very durable car.
Just because this is cheaper, does not mean it is better value.
People buy traxxas and arma also because of spare parts....,it's easy to find them be it original or aftermarket.
Thanks for another great video Phil. A few of us are also still considering the Zorro. I know you have done some specific videos on the Zorro, but maybe you could do a detailed direct comparison of the two? Seeing how they both handle the same bits of terrain would be really helpful.
I prefer the proportions of the shell on this one (something about the zorro just looks off proportion wise), BUT, personally I love a proper open cockpit (seeing the roll cage and the drivers) on cars and so having the basic type shell on this one is a step backwards for me.
Who is phil
Good idea the zorrow looks very nice as well.
@@chrishorst1318 ... Phil is the guy you have just been watching in the video 😀
It is a small but fairly fast and powerful RC car. Jumping is nice too. Roasting is nice too.😁😁😁
Solid platform i had a shorter wheelbase version of this. Only issues i had was rear driveshafts breaking from time to time.
Good truck. One of the reasons I have a Slash is that I bought it 2nd hand. I happened to have the gear sitting around to get it going. Atm though, even 2nd hand prices are stupid high.
This is the one I've been waiting for! Thank you 😊
Looks like a nice truck, great value with the included battery
Fantastic bashing and review, Phil! 😃
I guess a heatsink and a fan on the motor wouldn't hurt.
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Yes, that got a little hot on the grass!
What an awesome truck , hope these become easily available here in Australia
It's the same set up as my FS Racing victory. That came with paddle tyres. and i have had it for three years now and its still going strong..lol 👍
Its the fs racing victory x chassis or Helion Invictus chassis
Rpm makes arms for this chassis
Looks really nice. I have to admit I think I'd like to have a brushless zorro instead, though. Center diff being the reason...
Great looking truck. I was really hoping for it to be FTXs version of the UDR. They really need to make one.
Some people get so Lucky when one platform is being reused for so many years
Nice.. I've been waiting for this one.!
Your action montages are consistently absolutely top drawer, mate.. I could literally watch a whole video of just that.. 👍
cheers dude... appreciate it. Unfortunately people get bored quickly on montages, so I've been slowly cutting them down over the last couple of years... but have to throw some short ones in to showcase the action :)
@@TomleyRC you've just got it nailed.. Slowed down to just the right speed.. Getting yourself in low for that perfect angle.. They're a joy to watch..
@@andrewentwistle9694 I guess he knows from his view stats where people stop watching, even if that isn't everyone
The shutdown is a safety cutoff that Hobbywing seems to do. If you try 3 times to set off and it doesn't see the motor turn it simply shuts down til you cycle the power. I have a Max10 SCT and it does the same thing if grass is really long. Its less noticeable with smaller pinion as it can get going easier.
Nice vid! I love to bash my Senton the same way, looks a solid car!
Great little truck. I like that they are almost 1/2 the price. I feel the same way about the REMO ROcket 1/16 price is right... Thanks for sharing..👍
Yes… lots out there if you search around
Hello friend
Great video as always been waiting for you to bring a video out on this new offering from ftx as I'm new back into the hobby I must admit I do like the ftx range as I have the zorro nitro version and the dr8 and that's a beast.
I do like that you get everything in the box ready to go apart from charge.
My question is would a higher mwah 3s lipo with higher c rating make this any faster maybe another video for you to look into.
This could be on my radar as one to buy.
Peter from Birmingham
Hi Peter. Yes, maybe a little more punch from a better quality Lipo. I think it really needs a slightly bigger motor to get the most out of it
Well priced for what you get 99% RTR, you gave it some rips and flips took alot for a pivot ball to pop. I say good deal if the parts are available 👍
Yes, in the UK there not much else for that price that’s as durable. Apart from other FTX short course 😅
great to see another good SCT on the market, this one looks to be a bargain for the money!
Brother bought the Ramraider recently. And I was quite impressed by the quality and the price! 👍
Looks like the 1:10th scale Mojave we've all unknowingly waiting for 😍
Those almost look like ProLine Trenchers on it.
Yeah, I got my Senton 3S for $279 a while back. I think they're about $330 now. That's a super decent price for coming with a 3S battery.
Yeah, they were a good price a while back!
Looks great me an lee are liking are trophy truck great video buddy 😊👍🙋♂️
Definitely getting this to go with my Mojave EXB 😊
Do you need 50mph?
Of course you do! Great video ‼️👍👍🦾🦾
seems like it'd be a good platform for the IROC errr IROYT (international race of you tubers) do a real trophy truck course, on/off road with some wet and dry....that'd be a hoot to watch.
Nice vid, think I might get one I really fancy something for abit of off roading
I love the trophy truck look. I’ve been watching a ton of videos. I’m looking at probably picking up a couple of hyper go’s for me and my boys but the draw to a 1/10th is strong. Not my favorite styling but the little bashers I think would suit us best. We aren’t experienced RC owners- I had a micro t years ago and currently only have an scx 24- I’ve never owned something big and fast (my micro t did do 30+ and it was miserable. Too much power to control. We just want something durable- relatively quick- not too expensive to hurt when it breaks or that will make my wife leave me.
When are you doing an upgrade video. Cant wait to see that as own one now after watching this in action. Please provide links for parts when you do. Keep up the great work.
As for a little bit of cogging other than a better battery it might be worth re-calibrating the ESC as quite often they are not calibrated right
Reminds me more of my Team Associated ProSC10 as well as the senton. Gotta put this one on the list after their big mustang
I see a lot of team associated similarities 🤔😂. Looks like an awesome little chassis! I'm gonna order one. I've never had any trouble out of the few ftx I've gotten my hands on
I’d buy it.
Woah! Absolutely rips! I might get one
Probably because unlike Canada and the USA, the retail markup on RC vehicles isn't 100% above wholesale?
Phil, just watched on me PHONE(not Roku) why I don't understand is how some are more expensive 😫, and the less expensive seem to be as good or even better than the other.
Cheers Tomley,
Troy 😎
What a smashing little trophy truck. Well done FTX 😊
I have a senton, because I’m not a traxxas fan at all based on personal experiences with 2 of their products, they don’t get a 3rd chance. But I’d probably have bought this over it for the price point, and because I prefer the colour (orange). But ultimately because I had to buy a (decent) charger and lipo(s) and that added over £150. That all said, I do enjoy the Senton, 50mph on a freshly mowed meadow is easy to achieve, and the few breakages are easy to get replaced. I’m also surprised that I don’t have a single FTX in my collection, but I am sure that will change. Oh and pillow ball hubs is definitely a great idea, should be able to reduce the slop the Senton is famous for.
Hi Phil another great value rc you have brought to us sir. I also luke the Element. Take care hope you have a great weekend SIR 🇬🇧👍🏼🤩✌🏼
Cheers Mike. You too
Great to get your kit up and save money i see it for £260 on modelsport today hmm thanks for this one 👍🏼
My fav tv truck is the hpi savage xs flux I’ve owned 2 both broke from being faulty however my friend has one and it’s taken so much pushing and not a single thing broke in 4 years of bashing I decided to get a hpi e firestorm flux that lasted about a week before the slipper clutch burnt out had to replace it nearly every 2nd run
Wow, straight snatching the trencher mold on those tires
Alex kowaliuk here I actually have the arrma senton it's a beast and worth every penny.
That thing will be a HIT. Maybe not as fast as a Senton or a Slash out of the box, but that's an easy fix, and it comes with a 3s and a charger? AMAZING, I really like it! It looks a lot like a Senton in motion.
Got mine coming in orange as well, looks great.
I wish that FTX sold these as a bare chassis without all the brushless gear, battery and charger for a cut rate so you could install your own brushless system.
I have a Rokatan, Ramraider and Apache (pre ordered) i really don't have need of the same underspecced, hot running, over geared brushless system three times over. The Ram raider is useless for a good second after pulling the trigger and won't run on long grass. Needs a potent brushless system upgrade.
Yes, a roller at a reasonable price would sell pretty good
@@TomleyRC you seem to have good sway with them Phil, any chance of having a quiet word about getting a roller versions of the Rokatan/Ramraider chassis specs like a few of the other brands are doing these days?
One of these with a full fat hobbywing max 10 in it would be wonderful. Problem is having to pay the extra for the stock system in the first place removes the 'budget' appeal of the trucks as replacing it puts you at the Arrma price point.
@@MrLilredmachine I will certainly pass on the request :)
@@TomleyRC Thank you! And great work on the continued informative and fun vids. 👌
If it hasn’t already been said, this looks to be the same truck as the Helion dominus v2. I bought the helion for my son and think it’s a very clean truck.
you should do ftx apache vs zorro vs arrma senton and any other 1/10 scale trophy trucks youve got lying around
Be great to see that, might be one for the Popalong RC boys as they love their SC's
I had this truck/buggy under it's prior brand name - Helion Dominus. Great value overall. Trade offs are:
the arms are more brittle and break at the hinge pins
The drive shafts are dog bones all around and they bend and pop out
The turning circle is poor, probably because of the axles not being CVDs
Suspension is too stiff, needs softer springs and very thin oil, I had to use 15 weight.
I'm sorry but this chassis was not used on the Dominus to my knowledge..The Dominus used the metal chassis..Other parts are shared though.
There may have been some changes like this comes with CVD's on the front and suspension setup looks very good. I'm not sure if they are the same shocks as the Rokatan has smaller shocks which bounce a lot like you say
@@philthyco1 I should clarify the Helion Dominus Pro had the composite tub chassis. The standard Dominus was the plate aluminum.
@@rhynecars Got it..I had the metal chassis one and its oem the fs racing marauder
Where can I get dog bones for my dominus
interesting thats the Helion Dominus Sc v2 chassis
That's really good deal. Handle very well.
I love your vids been watching a long time I must say with all due respect you kind of give me that James may vibe of the RC world awesome Great truck great video thanks again for an awesome channel
Captain slow... not sure if that's complement or insult hahaha
@@TomleyRC totally a compliment how can you not love him Just the reviews he does on vehicles are awesome I still love to watch the old top Gear days
@@melmyrtle5765 yeah he’s funny haha. The best of the 3 I reckon
Let packaging pillows live! End of the day, you're selling/posting rcs too 😁
That looks like it will be a fun truck to run 👍 . Saw the Rokatan when we called into Jadlam and really tempted
Rokatan is really good. Put some thicker body posts on and it will be decent
@@TomleyRC cheers Phil
I luv the reference to "the Proclaimers song" i can tell we r same age. Good times.
nice vid you got me considering buying this as my 2nd sc truck w/ my 1 current sc truk being the rgt terminator i bought based upon ur review...but it let me down in many ways. At least its price was low tho
. i want the reely rat max but id honestly consider this 1 in place of it. Especially bc its so hard to get any reely in usa. I love EU rc but none will cum to usa. I cant blame em tho.
The thing you get with traxxas or arrma is a plethora of stock and quality aftermarket parts in any hobby shop or on most RC websites, cheap stuff is cool if you cant afford the namebrand or its for a kid youre not sure will enjoy it but anyone else just buy something namebrand itll outlast the cheap stuff and if its a popular platform will be around for years and the parts will be too.
I would be interested in seeing what the diffs look like and the material they are made out of. Tbh it looks like a solid ripper for the price.
agreed. I'm assuming metal diff gears but it'd be nice to know for sure. Does anybody at this point still do plastic? I've had an FTX before. I liked it. Only downfall here in the states is if I brake something, I have to wait 2-3 weeks before I get a replacement part. But if you're not in a hurry, they're a good value.
Side note: It looks like the motor mount on this one is plastic. That's a bit of a bummer.
@@SteveSoper1979 @32 seconds into the video the box says "metal bevel geared differentials"
This looks identical to my Helion Invictus 10MT. I'd bet the parts interchange!
Went back and had a look at the Lokatan as I missed it before and I’m very taken by it! They have obviously worked out an excellent platform and pretty damn cheep . Question is could I sneak another car in without my wife finding out! 😂😂
I will if you do lol
@@ryano8613 🤣🤣🤣
The only problem with this truck, is that the FTX Zorro Brushless exists, and that has a centre diff ❤❤❤
Great video 👍👍
Good afternoon Mr. Tomley, I am in the USA I have always wanted to get my hands on one of these FTX. However I don't know anybody right now at this time that carries the spares for this company. I was wondering if maybe you could point me in the right direction about making that change. Thanks again, Lance. As always your videos are great.
If only we could get these in the USA
They come under the Reely brand or FS Racing
I,m really impressed with FTX stuff. You certainly get a great deal.
Never heard of this brand before so I have to question the spare parts availability. Apart from that, the truck looks pretty good.
FTX had better watch out; Traxxas gonna sue them for using a blue too close to theirs. 😅
Not had many breakages on the Ramraider, mostly the hubs had no driveshaft issues I'm guessing they sorted it
11:30. I love rebrands for part support since they all fit largely. You mentioned it's a platform other manufacturers use. Can you or does anybody know what those make & models are? Thx.
Helion but they don't exist anymore, the Rival MT10 is also Helion
Awesome looking truck!
per Amazon (and my local hobby shop) the 3s Senton BLX is 'only' $339 American. Perhaps just the pound conversion you showed but it's not over $400.
Hello Phil, I'm looking for a nice brushless 2WD short course. I'm looking at the HPI jumpshot sc flux, Team Associated Pro2 SC10 and Arrma Senton 4x2 (w/ brushless upgrade later on). Which one do you recommend? I valor handling and durability (and low maintenance cost). If you have any other recommendation, let me know :) Thanks and cheers from Portugal.
I can’t wait to add this to my collection.
Seems freaking sweet for the price!
That’s the same exact chassis and setup as the old helion dominus 10sc v2 that’s crazy. Helion been discontinued for years now. It’s was a good setup though.
Looks good bit of kit for 1/10 could be 1/8 and 3s
Nice truck glad to see the hand.😅 do you know if there is any brass diff cover for the fire horse?
looks a great little truck, will be a nice up grade for my kids. up from like brushless tracers etc or perhaps they would be better with mt10s?
Good price, not bad car but I think the brushless Zorro is better and on Modelsport the Zorro is £10 cheaper.
Love my Zorro, it's faster and more powerful ESC, 80amp!
Got the Zorro due to your review Phil, all smiles.
Love my Senton but its a different beast 👍👍
does this one replace the Zorro though?
@Make Stuff Badly I wouldn't have thought so, if you look at Tomlee's review of both you can see the Zorro is a far superior car, who knows!
Been waiting for you to do this sct, orange looks better than the blue, for me anyway, i absolutely love this truck, senton is awesome but this is such a good price and you get a light bar and battery 👌😃😃😃😃👍👍👍👍
Yes, really good price for us in the UK, and I think with a little gearing tune, it will be much better. Or even a slightly bigger motor
Big difference between "cheap" and "inexpensive". This unit looks "inexpensive". If you had run it and it had smashed itself to pieces it would be "cheap".
I like it ! Super solid. It’s a contender!
You put the truck through some tough tests. It appears to be a very good truck. You get a lot for the money.
Agree 👌
Looks like they bought the molds from the Helion Invictus. The only RC that was honorable to carry the name Apache was made by HPI. That desert buggy was a beast.
