  • A closer look at some things you might have missed in the trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's horror/fantasy/romance film The Shape Of Water (2017), in theaters December 8.
    In this analysis, I'll break down some of the unnoticed details in The Shape of Water trailer, examine the possibility that this film is connected to Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy universe and address the rumors that this film's creature is related to The Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954).
    Could this creature be Abe Sapien from the Hellboy movies? Is this secretly a prequel? Or is this creature from The Amazon? Is this a sequel? Stick around to the end of this video to find out.
    Synopsis: From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER - an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.

      what about Dark Universe? they confirmed that they will have the universe of all universal monsters. and i think that Guillermo del Torohe is the expert of the horror movies and can be the best director for the movie the Creature from the black lagoon from Dark Universe.

    The shoe thing is probably symbolically related to Pisces, the zodiac sign of the fish. Pisces rules the feet, so the shoes will probably symbolically tie into that. Pisces is known as being a sign of dreams and escapism, among other things. This is definitely a Pisces themed movie, if it weren't already obvious lol. Im pretty excited for this. Pisces stories are p interesting to me.

      Genius! And here I thought astrological signs were a waste of time...

    • @skylerkuhn5898
      @skylerkuhn5898 Před 7 lety +12

      Astrology is the basis of every trope both in real life and fiction. Both classical and contemporary stories use these tropes. Check out the book "Hero with a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell. It breaks down the psychology of story telling to reveal that every narrative is actually the same story, the same myth. Pretty interesting stuff. Del Toro usually goes pretty hard with the visual metaphors so his movies are both visually enticing as well as really easy to figure out with very basic esoteric knowledge.
      For example- This is obviously as romance movie, but with a fish? Pisces is a water sign, and water represents intuition and emotions. "I like long walks on the beach" is a cheesy fantasy date trope but it exists for the same reason. Emotions, love, water.

      I typed up a long reply about why astrology is the foundation of every story, both classical and contemporary, but i think i deleted it before posting by accident lol. Basically, if you want to find out what a story is about, just learn basic astrology and esoteric symbolism. Every thing from Marvel/DC to the Matrix to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Odyssey, Shakespeare, Hunger Games, even the Bible- Its all just zodiac tropes being rearranged to teach us lessons through entertainment.

    That voice (at the beginning and end) is Richard Jenkins, the actor who seems to be some kind of friend/artist/father (figure) to the female lead.
    Also directors usually work with the same actors because they have worked together before and "get" each other, like working with each other, etc. rather than for reasons of auteur.

    This is pretty weird but her shoes could represent like the formal life that she hates and is forced to do, or stress. At 3:49 is shows them falling off, maybe symbolising the stress of life going because she's with the fish person. Additionally, she puts on her shoes after she was asleep, to symbolise her going from a happy place (dreams) to grounded reality (shoes).

    "La Javanaise" is a 1963 song composed for Juliette Greco by the great Serge Gainsbourg. Of course, the interpretation in the trailer is new, but the idea is still there. Perhaps the authors right was too much expensive for the original interpretation.

    Doug Jones himself has already confirmed that this character has nothing to do with "any movie or character I may have portrayed before". Check his Twitter and Instagram for proof. He answers multiple comments asking about this and it is well-established now that the Shape of Water is a standalone movie that has no connection to the Hellboy universe.

    • @Stereobarf
      @Stereobarf Před 6 lety +1

      Exile Studios if you look at the design of this creature vs Abe Sapien you can see they are completely different. Also, anyone who knows anything about Hellboy knows that Del Toro invented all of the traits for Abe Sapien that you see in the film. It's HIS imagining of the character, not Mike Mignola's. Abe Sapien is a very different character in the comic book. Del Toro liked the traits he came up with because it made the "monster" more easily relatable to the audience, so he re-used them for this film. Still don't believe me? That's fine, there's plenty of proof of all of this online already, and even more proof when the movie comes out.

    I'd guess that the shoes represent her connection to the rest of the world, literally her staying grounded in reality, but when she's with Abe From the Black Lagoon, she gets lost in his world with him. A place where shoes aren't needed at all and are actually a hindrance, so we see the shoe fall away from her when she is with him. She doesn't care that she's losing the world shes used to because she's so caught up with Fish Man.

      Fnar For no apparent reason I've seen a lot of people who are told it's either not abe or not gill man (the creature from the black lagoons official monster name), and so instead concede and try to combine them. I can tell you for a fact, no way in hell this has anything to do with the creature from the black lagoon. This is fox, the creature is universal. A reboot is being made specifically for the dark universe. There is zero chance it's related. However, I fully believe this is abe related, at the least he's working on a prequal for a hellboy universe. If not, there is an awfull lot of ammo for a copyright lawyer. The abe similarities are gigantic, and undeniable, so if it's not abe, del Toro blatantly ripped him off.

    Also keep in mind Abe Sapiens in the comics was influenced by the creature from the black lagoon, Mike Mignola is heavily influenced by pulpy horror in general. Additionally GDT was a huge Hellboy and Mignola fan before he got to make the film, I mean he wrote the intro to a 1 or 2 of the arcs for Hellboy about how he loved the comics and how him and mignola settled on Perlman for HB (kinda of a neat story if you haven't heard it)

    @CZsWorld After thinking about it, I'm satisfied with my theory behind the importance of the shoes. I figure that the shoes represent her ties to her (this) reality; grounding her in this unfriendly yet familiar world. She is obviously deaf and so cleaning and maintaining is a simple yet powerful way for her to make a physical change in the world while also being easily perceived by others. In my opinion she doesn't care too much for the cleaning itself but for the difference she is able to make. For this reason she opts to help this strange creature that is unfamiliar and alien to her even though others seem to treat it with hostility. She does this because, just like her cleaning, this is a way to make a possibly positive difference. During the scene that she and the creature kiss, her shoe falls off. That to me represents her letting go of some preconceived ideas she may have had from simply growing up in her world. But, notice she only loses one shoe. Maybe this is just because having both shoes float away in the same scene would look odd and possibly distract from the kiss. Or maybe it's interchangeable with the amount of her old self and ideals she is still holding on to.

    Saw it tonight & I liked it. Looks like it could be related to Abe Sapion, as he has the ability to heal with his hands and in the Hellboy movies, Abe always wore gloves, unless he needed to "examine" something but then, Abe never tried healing anyone as far as I remember.

    The Hellboy/Creature From the Black Lagoon argument is ridiculous. This movie is being released by Fox. Universal owns Creature From the Black Lagoon. Columbia/Sony owns Hellboy, and Legendary Pictures is trying to make a deal for the rights. Therefore, this film has nothing to do with either property.

    Something I thing is strange is the official wiki page clearly states that it is set in 1962 and only takes place over the course of a few months , but a lot of people think it takes place in 1963. There are some things that point to that being more likely,but I believe it is just like most films and is a slightly altered continuity of events from our own.

    Ever thought about Lovecraftian theme? Del Toro is a Lovecraft fan, the creature is worshiped by the amazonian and in the Shadow over Innsmouth, captain Obed Marsh befriends a tribe which worship Dagon and brings that belief back to Innsmouth and and also befriending the Deep Ones. Maybe the creature is a deep one??? Just a wild thought :)

    Personally, it doesn't matter to me if this is a Hellboy spinoff or Guillermo Del Toro's version of Creature of the Black Lagoon because regardless the detail and story will be spectacular and will leave the audience in awe. I am a huge fan of both, but I would love to see Hellboy's Abe have an origin story. Abe is a character that only Guillermo Del Toro can expand upon and if it is not an Abe origin story and a Black Lagoon story, I will be thrilled either way.

    The design is pretty reminiscent of the 'Future Abe' from the BPRD Hell on Earth series, which was a more alien take on the design.
