- Doug Jones is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood, often collaborating with Gillermo del Toro to become his go-to actor for roles like "Abe Sapien" in HELLBOY, "Fauno/Pale Man" in PANS LABYRINTH, and "Edith's Mother/Lady Sharpe" in CRIMSON PEAK.
This time Doug Jones plays "Amphibian Man" in Guillermo del Toro's THE SHAPE OF WATER. He sits down with Dave Morales, along with his co-star Richard Jenkins, to talk about transforming into the character and working with Guillermo on the film.
THE SHAPE OF WATER opens in theaters on Friday, December 15. - Zábava
How does Doug Jones not get an Oscar nomination for this??
Wait ...
Sally Hawkins was nominated given Doug a nomination for a fish-man is a bit much for cinema.
Agreed. But since the film was so acclaimed & got many nominations, there should be more recognition for Jones since his performances are so consistent. Few people probably know who Doug Jones is. Andy Serkis got well-known fairly quickly after Gollum.
I imagine because they’d have to start redacting former Best Actor wins to give them (rightfully) to Doug.
@@Hazelli1 When you think about it, Doug Jones is basically the Andy Serkis of Makeup. Does all this great work and gives great performances, always in a costume, and doesn't get any award recognition for it.
So this dude's like, "When in doubt, play a merman?" I mean, c'mon! How does one dude get lucky enough to play not one, but TWO fishmen in one career? His performance as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films was just brilliant.
It's a "quintessential guillermo del toro film - he loves to show an underdog rising to the top , an underdog triumphing in some way...I'm helping tell stories where the voiceless can find their voice, in this case its literal and that love is possible no matter how much of a freak of nature we feel we are. There's beauty in that. there's beauty in being a freak, something other than mainstream, something other than normal. There can be beauty and there can be love. That's what I love about this movie"- Sweetest part of this interview!
boy, is Doug Jones Del Toro's lucky charm?
Dragon Landlord maybe his muse?
He is his muse
The movie is a fucking masterpiece
"It takes a village to make a fishman". That needs to be a t-shirt. Or a bumper sticker.
PhantomDrums917 YES

@@anitak3985 sorry to correct you but his name is David hyde pierce not price unless that was auto correct who dubbed doug in the first movie but he respected that doug wanted to play the character fully including the voice for the second film
@@josephdolman Hyde Pierce heard about the suit and respected Doug for it that he requested to not be credited for the voice.
I met Doug Jones at LexCon - such a sweet, enthusiastic man.
I met him at la comic con 2019 he was very
Wow Doug Jones is incredibly eloquent
It's always good to see Dick Jenkins just being Dick Jenkins! He was a couple of years ahead of me when we studied theatre at Illinois Wesleyan long ago. (There were still dinosaurs around. His hair was black.) Even then, when we were both in our twenties, he was an awesome performer. His Mack The Knife was unforgettable!
Doug Jones’ laugh is so adorable
Doug Jones opened the doors to fish fetishes for me

Such a cute interview! Found myself giggle through the whole thing with all 3 of them 🥰🥰
Wow. Richard Jenkins voice was so familiar to me but I didn't know why. Thankfully they mentioned he was in 6 Feet Under which is one of my the best TV series ever made. As for the film, it was excellent.

Both amazing actors. I remember seeing Richard Jenkins in The Shape of Water and thinking I KNOW him from another movie, and I looked him up and I saw him in Dear John as John's dad, playing a completely different character. He is incredible.
