  • Krik of Black Owl Outdoors takes a look at the Dust backpack from Direct Action Gear. We were approached by them some months ago and asked if we were interested in reviewing any of their outdoor products. After looking over their gear we settled on the Dust rucksack. One of the first things we noticed about their rucks were they all had external water bottle pockets. Which if you enjoy tactical stylings and materials and water bottles, you know there is a shortage of bags with external water bottle pockets built in. Not only are the water bottle pockets present, but they are on both sides and collapsible similar to that of the Hazard 4 Second Front. The bag is constructed of 500D cordura and is robust enough to offer confidence yet light enough to add no hassle to your hike.
    The Direct Action Dust would be a great choice for day hikes, impromptu trips to the woods or even an EDC bag. The admin pocket of the bag fully filets open and offers easy access to the great organization of the pocket. We are very impressed with Direct Action Gear so be prepared to see some more of their awesome products!

      I have the Dragon Egg and love it even more than my 5.11 Tactical Rush 12 pack and my tried and true 1st generation Camelbak HAWG from 2003. Direct Action was just a gamble and has never failed me at all. Just purchased a DA Dust the other day.

    I got the bigger (25l) Dragon Egg for EDC. Great packs. Dragon Egg features everything that Dust has, plus straps on the bottom for sleeping system etc. and a separate compartment for a laptop.

    Great Video! I've owned the Dust backpack in Olive Green for about 3 months now and it's holding up great! I've found that the clear plastic pocket in the admin section is very useful for storing cables, earbuds, and other gadgets because you can see where they are in the pocket and easily grab them. The mesh pocket in the main compartment is also useful for storing items like bug spray, because you can reach in and know exactly where it is rather than fish around the entire compartment for it.

    The only think I would like to see on the bag is the option to tie like a blanket or tarp under the bag with some straps.

  • @RandomButtonPusher
    @RandomButtonPusher Před 8 lety +3

    Nice looking pack, especially for the organized user, and a good overview provided.
    One detail that I think might be helpful for folks in their consideration of such a pack is to distinguish between a waist belt/strap and a hip belt. The Dust has what I would classify as a waist belt, which is not designed to transfer pack weight -- rather it's purpose is to secure the pack to the person and stop pack flop or sway when moving fast or climbing, etc. Too often I see complaints that a day pack's "hip belt" doesn't fit the complainer because it sits above the hips, particularly on taller users. A thin, and often narrow, waist strap/belt doesn't need to be anywhere particular around the lower torso, though at actual waist (if you can still find yours) is nice. Ride adjustment is focused on the shoulder straps.
    Hip belts are designed to ride on the hips and transfer pack weight. They are almost -- almost -- always padded, even if only lightly, and cut to wrap around the top of the pelvis. Packs with true hip belts usually come in various torso sizes so that the belt can end up in the right place. Sometimes it involves an adjustable harness/belt system. RIde adjustment centers on the hip belt -- once it is settled appropriately, then the shoulder straps are adjusted.

    thanks for your review, i just placed an order based on your critique. coming from a maxpedition monsoon for ~1.5 years use, i would consider this a huge upgrade as the monsoon was not comfortable as the weight of my pack increased. the dust suits my need as an EDC 24hr urban pack. the only hard part was deciding what color i wanted; i ended up with the shadow grey because the ranger green was discontinued but still gives it an inconspicuous, low profile look when out and about. depending on how satisfied i am with this pack, i may go for a dragon egg or ghost for a 72hr/camp bag.

    Excellent! I´ve just recently bought the Ghost backpack by Direct Action and i have to say i am very very pleased with the quality, and features that it offers. You can even take the waist belt off the pack and attach the outside pocket, or add your own molle compatible pockets for the following use: It comes with a shoulder harness that attaches to the belt so you actually have a scout system or suspenders type system aswell as a bakcpack! very cool. It is a roomy sized pack, with the side pocket featrues that are very ingenius but simple. Thanks for sharing!

    Great review, really like the looks of this pack. I wonder though, the way the straps are set up, if you unbuckled them and tucked one into the hydration compartment and buckled the other on the buckle opposite it looks like you could turn this into a sling pack (not that you would necessarily want to), but the layout looks super similar to the mil spec monkey adapt pack. That would be a side by side I'd like to see.

    After watching the BOO review here I picked up this pack in coyote brown.
    Guys I love love love this pack. Streamlined, lightweight and comfortable. I did a few long day hikes with this one and yes it was comfortable all day I'm a chronic over packer) and the only drawback was a little sweat on my back (though not nearly as much as other packs I use/used) but the padding is incredibly comfortable. Also I use a 40oz klean kanteen as well and yes it fits tight enough in the side pockets but a couple of times, with the bottle full of water, it slipped out when bending over.(yes even with the compression straps tightened) I've solved the problem there by adding a little bit of shock cord with a plastic cord tensioner attached through the loop strap that is sewn to the top of each side pocket which you can slip over the top of the bottle and cinch it down... easy as falling off a log.

    I just subscribed to your channel. Came across this vid since I saw several reviews on Direct Action's Dragon Egg pack. Don't get me wrong, the Dragon Egg is a great pack. However, after watching your video, I think the Dust pack would be better for my case since I use my pack (Camelbak 3-day pack, I think mine is of the older versions) on a semi-urban environment. Also, the size of the Dust pack would be perfect for me (I'm 5'10" 150 lbs).Again great vid and an even greater review. Looking forward to your future uploads.

    Yeah…I ordered a coyote brown dust (for a less conspicuous use), a DragonEgg and a Ghost in highlander krypton for some outings in the woods. I'm 60 and I can not carry 80 liters packs, I must go light to be able to move, and so those volumes of carrying seem enough for my needs. I'll try the Dragon 4-8 Dec in a bushkraft course (but we do not bring any food), and I'll try the Ghost in a 4 to 1 week outing needing food. I'll let you know my impressions, but you are more of an expert than me.

      +MeisterFury I bought it a while ago to test, basically an enlarged dust with a bigger admin area, straps on the underside for blanket, sleeping bag, etc, and more loops in the front for more attachment of various items. It's just as great as the dust. I will say the volume is smaller than I expected, probably closer to 24/25 liters rather than the advertised 28. It hides its capacity very well though, the egg shape is deceiving. Absolutely wonderful pack.

      Bryan Resch Hey Bryan, I just received my Ghost pack last week and I absolutely love it. It screams quality (much like the way vanquest does with me- which is a high praise). It seems the Ghost has a larger but comparable design to the Dust with a few extra bonus features (the waist belt, being one, is great. Really comfortable and seems to bear weight well for this type of pack design when loaded. It is much different than the waist strap featured in this review). I've found the laser-cut MOLLE to be a little more difficult to work with than standard MOLLE, but after using a butter knife I got the hang of it a little bit. It is nice that it won't absorb water and weigh the pack down when wet.
      Bottom line is, if you are considering purchasing it, I don't think you will be disappointed. I smile every time I see it lying on my floor and it's very comfortable and well made. I can't wait to put it through the ringer this weekend as I have a 3 day camping/hiking trip! Hope this helps and you like it as much as I do!
      (No I do not work for Direct Action. I'm just a very satisfied first-time buyer)

      togib24 awesome , the waistband on the Ghost is what sold me and the fact the front is detachable and used as a day pack. Glad to hear you love it.
      Peace

    Hey Krik, just started watching your channel about a month ago down here in Australia. Just starting to look into getting started with bush craft and all that. Just wondering would this pack be big enough for an overnight or should I go for something bigger like the Ghost? From all the reviews I've watched on packs Direct action really seems to be the pack that I wanna save for just wanna know which one to get. Cheers!

      +Ben Sutcliffe I would recommend a larger pack for an over night, especially since your are just starting out.

    Hey Krik, do you like the size of this pack for a good all around pack or would you rather have the Ghost Direct Action pack for the bigger amount of options it has? Black Owl Outdoors

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  Před 9 lety

      Vinny Sandoval Yes it's a great all around pack - for day use. It really doesn't have the capacity. If you want something ONLY for day use, then this would be perfect.

    how much weight can this bag bear? I'm really considering getting this pack because of all the wonderful reviews, but I need to have a pack able to get around a 45lb load and not worry about tearing the bag apart.

    • @michaelsantana5781
      @michaelsantana5781 Před 8 lety

      yes, I use mine for hiking/training. I usually load 35- 45.. 50 pounds is too painful though with the thin shoulder straps.. been using this for a year.. threw it off a cliff with jagged rocks.. just a few scuff marks and dirt.. burned the loose threads on the webbing and it was good to go. I was shocked! you get what you pay for 👍outstanding quality dude.

    I have a maxpedition kodiak gear slinger. I hurt every time I put it on. Is this bag comfortable ? Say , with 20 pounds or so. The dragon egg looks to be the size I need. I know there deferent size, but the backing is the same .

    I think you're right about having a new player on the market. I recently gave my Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon II to my grandson and I'm looking for a replacement. I liked the Pygmy but wanted to see what other companies were offering. After watching this video and checking out the available reviews on other Direct Action products, this company has definitely caught my attention. For those interested in the Ghost, there are some good European reviews but none in English at this time. However, here is a link for a well written review with excellent photos.
