  • Krik of Black Owl Outdoors takes a look at the newest offering from Vanquest, the Ibex 30 backpack. Alex from Vanquest Gear sent us this bag to test out and give our opinions on it. While some of you may recognize the design being similar to the Khard from Arc'teryx, there are small design differences that make this a different bag all together and worth discussing.

    I have used many bags, and all the ones with the belly strap was the best for me. Kept the bag from always trying to slid off my shoulders. Specially when going long distance. Without the belly strap i was always having to hold onto the shoulder straps to keep the bag on. The strap does the job of you holding the shoulder straps up front.

      Yea, I like that feature as well. I've been using my Helags a lot since it's been colder. And I don't mind it being a top loading bag. But having the ability to open up the entire pack is so nice. Thanks for watching my man. -Krik

    I agree that it is very similar to the Arc'teryx Khard, however the Ibex is half of the price. Perhaps Vanquest did copy the design but they are delivering it at a cheaper price. Just food for thought!

      I paid $395 plus shipping for an Arcteryx Khard-30 a year ago but its shoulder straps and waist support are not well designed for heavy load... that's why I am selling it for IBEX's

      @Jarhead6 Před 9 lety

      Sean W I think the IBEX is way better! I got the black one for review and the pattern is amazing! I should post the comparison video hopefully soon!

    Great review Krik and Stony. I agree with being very critical of fit and comfort...especially when it comes to tactical bags which I think were originally designed for ease of mobility for assaulting rather than all out comfort (hence the reason the waist belts that ride so high etc.). I tried the Maxpedition Vulture 2 and unfortunately it did not work for me personally (and I really wanted it to work, because I am a fan of Maxpedition and loved most of the design) because I felt the hip belt and lumbar support was lacking, as the straps did not fully wrap around my waist due to being attached on the outside corners of the pack, causing too much weight to be put on the shoulders...a big no no in my book for me personally. At the moment I am trying out the Condor Venture pack to fill my "bushcraft day/summer overnight" pack gap (thanks for your review by the way) and have been very happy with the comfort level, the stitching leaves a lot to be desired though (as you pointed out in your review) and I am in the process of reinforcing the stress points myself with high tensile strength thread. The stitching on this pack looked really good, I dare say even better than what I have seen Maxpedition put out, just looked a bit cleaner. Would you say the stitching seemed of better quality than Maxpedition? Seems like they are trying to compete directly with Maxpedition, especially with a logo that says "Tough-Built Gear"...sounds a lot like Maxpedition's logo "Hard-Use Gear"...another nail in the coffin in regards to your point on originality...but clever marketing I guess lol.
    All and all looks like a solid "day pack/summer overnight pack" but the comfort issue would make it a deal breaker for me personally as comfort is on the top of my priority list due to the type of hiking that I like to do. Thanks again for the great review, keep them coming ! You guys rock!

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  Před 9 lety

      You're welcome. I'm glad someone shares my opinions on bags. As far as stitching goes, Vanquest does pretty much have flawless stitching. I couldn't say if it's better than Maxpedition, though. Thanks for commenting. -Krik

    Excellent, thoughtful review! I really appreciate how you really looked hard at the pros and the cons. I have been thinking about this pack a fair bit and I have already watched a few reviews and this one gives me more useful info. Interesting that both you and Wingman 115 posted around the same time and have fairly different takes on the pack. Perhaps it would be good to take it out on a longer hike with weight and see whether the ergonomics are really an issue. I definitely appreciate a good hip strap for proper load bearing and your take on that gave me pause. Thanks for this!

      @BlackOwlOutdoors  Před 9 lety +1

      D Doucet The first time I wore it I had it on for probably 3 hours. And I didn't have it as "heavy" as I did in the video. It wasn't the worst. But I still couldn't get solid contact on my body. Like I said, it may just be my body shape. AND, I'm very particular about how packs fit my body. We all have our tastes and preferences. That's what's great about CZcams, you can watch multiple videos from different folks and get a pretty good feeling for a product. Thanks for watching. -Krik

    I'm not big on tactical for my outdoor gear, but I do take emergency preparedness very serious.... I see this pack making a great supplement to a BOB. I have a BOB equipped with "the usual", but there's a real need (especially in my area) to have a go bag with clothes and other similar items pre-packed, this pack would be perfect.

    When I had first seen this I figured it was a large mod of the medical pouches they have. If i am not mistaken they openly admit to snagging the design from ITS tactical (for the med kit). It seems much of the "tactical scene" all of the companies take a design and put a spin on it.
    I dig the vid also. I always find this channel informative.

    I've seen this backpack on the Vanquest site on sale for $112.89. Sounds like a steal. Would you say the Khard is worth the upgrade to Arc'teryx or would you feel the name is a large part of the price markup as they are very similar in design? Thanks.

    Great video Krik! Question, do you think a Kelty down quilt with a 40 degree rating will hold up to temperatures around 35? Or is the rating the lowest you can be whilst being "comfortable?'

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  Před 9 lety

      BP Gear Reviews Usually, those ratings are the lowest for "surviving" temps. Meaning, you'll last through the night, but maybe not be comfortable. Are you talking about a quilt for hammock camping? -Krik

    • @IRideStudios
      @IRideStudios Před 9 lety

      No it is for tent camping. My sleeping pad/tent also has low degree ratings so I figure it shouldn't be too bad.

    When camping out a gas stove, or chemical is ok, but when i know i have to be out a very long time for survival, wood is my choice, just hope im not in the desert with very little wood or even water. Nothing to drink means death, nasty water not boiled clean can also mean death. One time i was in a valley, I ran out of clean water, lucky i found a creek. My legs had become cramped from running out of water. It was even hard for me to climb the cliffs to get out of the valley. I was not prepared. I should have had something to light a fire, or even the pills i have to sanitize water. I do know how to start fires with 2 sticks. but i was to weak to try it. And i wanted to get out of the woods before it got dark. Now i have a back pack with much of the stuff i would need. from mistakes comes experience. You learn from your past mistakes. Then you go out and learn from your new mistakes :)
