  • Krik of Black Owl Outdoors takes a look at the Woodcraft backpack by Polish company Wisport. We were contacted by Military1st.co.uk and asked if we would be interested in reviewing any of the products they stocked. Being that they are based in the UK, they are privy to a selection of gear that still hasn't made its way into the North American market. After looking over their products Krik decided to check out the Woodcraft because of a couple main features. First, it had external pockets on each side of the ruck that were big enough to carry standard Nalgene size water bottles. Two, the entire pack was constructed out of brown Cordura fabric sans molle or pals webbing. While molle does offer a versatility to the pack, it does have the ability to draw unwanted attention and second looks. Will the Wisport dethrone the Fjallraven Helags as Krik's favorite bushcraft backpack?

Hi guys, cheers from Poland. Wisport is not a military company, they made backpacks for civilians. I have two of them: sparrow 20l and reindeer 75l - they are awsome. And what is important they are not made in China. True high quality Polish made.

Are they tough and durable? Do you advice to go with these? I am also considering Reindeer 75 or Raccoon 85.
      Thanx mate
      Cheers

“Are they tough and durable?” In a word - ‘YES’
500D Cordura is main material used in Wisport 35L and smaller packs and 1000D Cordura as main material used in Wisport 45L and larger packs. Strap hardware (buckles, slides, etc.) meet US Mil spec. and are popular brands as National Molding, ITW Nexus.
    500D vs 1000D Cordura?
Few construct packs mainly of 1000D Cordura, and the average adventurer will unlikely wear out or damage a 500D pack. 1000D has greater puncture and rip resistance over the 500D. Both 500D and 1000D are made of a nylon weave that varies in thickness. Although they are both made from the same underlying material, the 500D weave is made from thinner yarn than the 1000D.
Have recently purchased the Raccoon-45L and Raccoon-65L (w/ side pouches). The 65L is basically a Raccoon-45L with two detachable side pouches of 9L ea. but slightly larger and will accommodate taller ‘torso length’ (I’m 20.3” or 51.4cm).
    - Raccoon-45L - Size: approx. 20"x13"x11" (50x32x28cm) Weight: 2400g (measured 5.3lbs [2404g] - excluding side pouches)
    - Raccoon-65L - Size: approx. 23.5"x13.5"x12" (60x35x31cm) Weight: 3200g (measured 6.6lbs [3000g] - with side pouches)

I bought the 85L Raccoon Polish Woodland pack and it has not let me down yet. I carried, comfortably, 73lbs up a 2000' elevation change mountain side in the Sierras with this pack. Wisport is outstanding as far as packs go. Mine had quite a bit more MOLLE capability than the smaller size that you have but what you got looks pretty sweet. I plan on getting my wife the 45L one in the spring. Great video BTW. Just wanted to see what other folks were saying about these packs. Keep up the good work!!

I have Wisport Whistler backpack for something like 5 years (everyday use + short trips and journeys) and it still looks almost like a new one, with only slight traces of usage. And truly I often packed it with heavy loads, using it as shopping backpack, carrying 12kg loads. Wisport makes great, durable backpaks. Their craftsmanship + high quality materials they use make their products really worth the prices. I am going to purchase another one, maybe Crafter or Raccoon 45 model.

Awesome pack! My biggest challenge when heading out into the woods to make videos is carrying my 7 pound tripod. I manage to strap it to the side of my pack but it throws the weight off balance big time. This rifle attachment points would take care of that perfectly. Great review as always.

I own this pack in olive green and I love it . Got it for mostly a day ruck and at times single overnight pack with the top and bottom straps can carry shelter/sleeping gear ... One tip though , the front straps work good for a rifle but for an axe not so good , so what I do is , the snow collar pull cord , I place my axe through that and cinch it , keeps it nice and secure as well as keeps the Axe bit under the lid and protected ...Also the bottom zipper for the stock , well that is a wide open wasted space all the way up the pack , I put it to use by placing my poncho and a contractor grade trash bad (which is something i place in any pack im using ) , Its out of the way , easy acces and no wasted compartment ...😊

I have tried some of Wisports stuff in the past and found it excellent quality for the price. I got it from military first as I am in the UK. Wisport are the main supplier to the Polish military and they have some fairly well thought out products. Great review mate! As always loving your channel.

Hi Krik and Stony, looks a nice pack...tho I'm still grieving over missing out on the Fjallraven Helags they discontinued just as you released your great review of it... and before I could get my hands on one! Anyways, tho I don't have any experience with the pack itself, I do have experience of buying some gear from the store that supplied you with this pack (Military 1st) as its only about 40 minutes drive from where I live in the UK. I've found them very good to deal with and they carry some excellent products. Just thought I'd chip in with my 2 cents worth, just incase any of my American brothers of bushcraft...or, for that matter...around the world were interested and had any concerns? For any doubting Thomas's amongst us...I best add...I have no personal affiliation with said store, purely from a customer viewpoint. Atb, Dazza.

I like this pack , because of the top and bottom straps for carrying a bed roll on the bottom and sleeping bag on top. I'm kicking myself for buying the Tigris One pack , it's brand new , but too small.
I'm going to check out the whisper and Helag.

I live in Wroclaw/Poland, like 2 miles from Wisport's headquarter ;-) As a girdo I have Kelty Map, MR 3DAP, Camelbak HAWG, Tasmanian Tiger and Karrimor SF packs,( had even TAD Litespeed once), but also Wisport Silver Fox and Sparrow - and Wisport is not the best, but has the best price to quality ratio, IMHO.

There is a company here in Australia called Platatac and make packs, pouches, uniforms etc. for Australian Military Personnel and one of the newest packs they make I think you'd really like. It is called the MAC ALICE, you can check it out on their website and costs around $350 from memory. It is a massive pack, but very practical at that. Whilst you're on the site, you could check out some of their other stuff maybe! There are already lot's of guys from the US that love their stuff. Thanks for reading :)

This pack is 35l not 40l so your feelings were right. As I am on a budget and those are really cheap competing other brands I have bought 75l Reindeer. I have to say it is amazing and very durable backpack. I highly recommend to familiarize with wisport brand.

quick fix for axe straps.... replace the buckle with the plastic one directional loops that would come on the shoulder straps of a jansport bag. I believer they are called "ladderlock buckles" or "plastic strap adjuster". you could easily remove the clips and thread that through both sides, which would give you almost just as much speed with better, more secure tension.

Hugh Austin It would depend on the size of the sleeping bag. I very thick winter bag would not work well. A smaller light summer bag should work just fine.
