- On October 23, 1999, the New York Yankees played the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia in Game #1 of the 1999 World Series. Orlando Hernandez started for the Yankees against Greg Maddux for the Braves.
A box score for the game is available online at www.baseball-reference.com/bo....
The theme NBC used this year is also one of their best! Always great baseball themes they had!
Love or hate them, these mid to late 90's yankees teams were built to perfection, not every dude was a bonafide superstar but had a role. George knew how to find winners.
This was the only World Series ever played at turner field. Most players from the 1998 team would return in 1999.
Didn't Braves play vs Bluejays at turner ? And Twins? Not sure of when it was built or names of ATLs stadium
@@SouthPhilthy before 97, the Braves played at the old Fulton county stadium.

...with the second duck-fart single of the inning. No less the half-inning after a rally-killing blown call on Chipper Jones's steal of second. The outcome of this game was the result of garbage umping, favorable NYY batted ball variance, and ATL defensive mishaps.
For a moment, I thought El Duque was gonna pitch a complete-game-shut-out with 18 strikeouts
Was this the first time in all your years that you missed the pregame intro for a World Series game?
I don't know what happened ... EDIT -- Looking at Newspapers.com for that date, I see on the TV listings that the pre-game show began at 4:30 PM PDT and the game at 5 PM PDT. My guess is I set the VCR for 5 PM by mistake.
@@StephensBaseballArchives I've always been astonished how every one of your games starts right at sign on and goes unedited all the way to sign off. Like you were always there in time to hit record or have timer record on, no mishaps or personal plans ever getting in the way etc. To miss it once in all that time (yet still be there in time for the introduction of the lineups) means you're only human.
@@billny33 There are a couple games where I forgot to set the VCR. The tapes typically were set to start a couple minutes early, and I let them run until the end. After I digitize them, I trim them using editing software.
October 23 also happens to be my birthday. Maybe I was off doing something and forgot.

@@harrisunlikethesunYankees sweep them rite?
Braves wasn't a great hitting team in 99 I believe pitching kept them in most playoff games
Boy is THAT an understatement. The Braves scored 9 runs in that series, and batted only .200.
I actually harbored a strong dislike of the Braves for many years afterwards just because of the way they played in this series.
2:28:35 is an example of smarts and thinking being as much a part of winning as talent.
Where was the umpire's strike zone ??
