i remember this like it was yesterday. I was 8 years old and my parents were getting divorced... I latched onto the Cleveland baseball team and I still get misty eyed thinking about the 95 and 97 teams.

I sent in one envelope that year to try and win tickets in the lottery system and won 4 tickets to this game in the bleachers about right where Thome hit the 8th inning homer. I took my wife and we took our dad's and what a night and memory for me and my father!!
I got the chance to take my father which as a kid wanted to go to the 1954 world series but was made to go to school in those days when i believe games were played during the daytime?
It was a trill when i told my dad i was taking him to game 5 and my wife taking her dad to his first game at Jacob's field as it only had been in season #2 there.
Watching this again at almost 55 yrs young and looking back i was just a kid still only married a couple years and 27 yrs old!
Time goes by so fast but i still have my ticket and program to remind me all these years later it definitely happened and i was there!!

Teams got wise to Mesa. He had a fast ball and a slider. Thats it. And he threw the fast ball 80% of the time. This bs cost the Indians the WS in 97.

So weird that at 2:54:14, after the two run homer, they still show the score as 5-2. That and the fact they don't have the score on the screen constantly (along with other stats we take for granted now) is interesting.

Family matters and boy meets world commercials were great. Also I think that Cleveland over reacted on Maddux's pitch. I don't think he was actually trying to hit him in a world series game. Greg is smarter then that.

Just a head's up for everyone that Game 6 was blocked by a copyright claim from Fox Media. Typically these claims are filed by a CZcams algorithm, not the supposed claimant. I filed an appeal. If they don't respond after 48 hours, the video goes public again, although it's always possible they'll deny the appeal. Most of the time, no one responds to the appeal and they're cleared. We'll see.

1996 is the worst World Series ever. The Braves were on the verge of taking a commanding lead and building a potential dynasty to falling flat on their faces and letting the Yankees completely take over the sport. Even if the Yankees still had their 1998-2000 three-peat, the Braves potentially could have had a three-peat of their own if they had finished the job in 1996 (with a 2-0 lead and the next three at home) and kept everyone together for 1997.

Looking back all these years later the Indians lacked dominant starting pitching and had at best a sketchy relief staff. They won most of the games because of their prolific offense. I’m still pissed about 95/97! Best teams ever assembled in Cleveland.

    • @AMDG_JMJ

@@sazarac28The '95 Tribe bullpen was lights out. The starting staff was very solid, even if not dominant like the Braves. The Tribe had the best ERA in the AL (as well as top batting average). Absolutely dominant team, 0.694 winning percentage (just one win shy of the majestic 0.700 mark attained by but a dozen or so teams in modern baseball history, i.e., since 1900). Just were edged out for this week by a VERY good Braves team (as Costas said even while the Braves were celebrating).

Al Michaels' baseball career basically goes out on an anti-climatic whimper a second time. The first was in the 1989 World Series, where not only he had to deal with the earthquake, but the fact that the World Series between Oakland and San Francisco was hilariously lopsided.
And then the second time, he had to deal with the strike that canceled the World Series in 1994 and then having to split play-by-play duties the next year with NBC's Bob Costas. To add insult to injury, Michaels is deprived a chance of calling Game 7, which ABC was in line to do in 1995.
I sometimes forget, that Al Michaels was once a top network baseball announcer because I've spent most of my life watching him and mostly knowing him call National Football League games in prime time.

Thome is the best player/person the team has had in my lifetime (47 years) - Kenny Lofton is second for his skills and love for the city - hell, coming back after being traded?? Love Manny and Belle, but they obviously had some flaws. Though of course Belle got absolutely robbed of the MVP to in 1995....that is undebatable and a black mark on the voting for personal feelings.
