    Those late 90s Yankees teams always had teams uncomfortable in the later innings. Those Yankee teams could be down 5 or 6 runs going into the 7th or 8th and it always felt like they could still win it. Even the crowd would celebrate small plays (like a walk or leadoff single to start the 7th or 8th) because they knew the Yanks could pull through. This is one of those games

    I remember watching this in 1998. I was 17 and a big Yankee fan. To this day I love how Yankee fans cheered Tony Gwynn when he was introduced. Tony Gwynn was hard not to like.

    This game, on a beautiful October Saturday night, was a great game to watch. Lots of drama. This was a huge opportunity for the Padres to get some confidence. It all fell apart, as this great Yankee team came through in the clutch. Again.

    Yeah I'm so glad you have it right from the beginning of the pregame intro. One flaw I just noticed in FOX's idealic re-enactment intro of kids playing in 1956 as Bob Wolff is calling Larsen's no-hitter, the one kid has an Atlanta Braves cap. It's got that same A as it does today. They played in Milwaukee then, their hats had that big ugly M so you can't have that Atlanta hat in the shot. Come on, do your research, Fox. The narrative part of it was pretty on point though. Either way, just great to see this whole game and soon the whole series up on here.

    No doubt in my mind had the padres played any other team in this World Series they would be champions. They were that good. They didn’t just roll over for the Yankees and gave them a hell of a fight despite being swept.

      Very true...a couple big HRs from the Yankees late in games otherwise the Padres were right there. The dynasty Yankees were just so clutch and seemed to always capitalize on mistakes.

  • @chrisuncleahmad
    @chrisuncleahmad Před 2 lety +2

    The 1998 Padres are a tremendously underrated pennant winner.They had a fine team, won 98 teams (which could have been 100), and really didn't roll over for the 114-win Yanks. The only time they really looked over their heads was game 2. Games 1 and 3 were not decided until the 7th inning stretch, and game 4 was 1-0 going into the 8th inning. It was a more compelling 4-0 series than Giants/Tigers in 2012.

    Kevin Brown that year was fire; he deserved that contract but I think it ruined his career. The arm injuries I'd say were from poor handling by the trainers and coaches, poor meaning mismanagement and overusage. His arm was like cement rubber that scouts drool over and had the durability of a Nolan Ryan. He could have had a less injury riddled career IMO. If he chose to go to the Braves he'd have several world series rings to complement his stellar career. Wonder why that didn't happen. I'd take slightly less money, play in my home state, and be lined up to win 3-4 world series potentially. Brave starters had historically been immune to injury and I'd say it was because their trainers were a ginormous cut above the standard at the time and their leader, Cox, was a smart leader who tapped every ounce of physical talent from his players.

  • @dukedematteo1995
    @dukedematteo1995 Před rokem +1

    This series could have been much different. The Padres were tough. You had the big HRs in the 7th inning in Game 1, and Brosius did his thing late in Games 3 and 4.
    Other than that the Padres were right there.

    • @aaronchan1088
      @aaronchan1088 Před rokem +2

      had the padres won the opening game, this series would go at least 6 games, but the yanks would still win.

      The Padres win Game 1 if Kevin Brown wasn't removed so early. There's simply no way Brown allows that home run to Knoblauch. Somewhat ironic because Bochy clearly pushed his luck with Brown in relief in Game 5 of the NLCS trying to get a 2nd inning out of him instead of Hoffman after Brown had come in and thrown 21 pitches out of the stretch to get through 1-2-3 7th. Bochy clearly left Brown in a bit too long in Game 3 of the NLDS on 3 days rest. Brown got through 6 shutout innings with just 1 hit, but you could see him tiring at the end of the 6th, much less the 7th. But I don't know what he was thinking taking him out in Game 1 of the World Series.

      @dukedematteo1995 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @mattray9904 according to Fangraphs Stats +, Kevin Brown was the toughest starting pitcher to HR off of in baseball history.
      Maddux, Clemens and Kershaw are up there as well.
      In relative terms, of course. Brown surrendered HRs 45% less than league average due to his obscene ground ball rates

    • @mattray9904
      @mattray9904 Před 10 měsíci

      @dukedematteo1995 Great point. With the tying run at the plate, Brown could have pretty much protected against the home run by sticking with his 95-96 mph sinker, which would likely run in and jam Knoblauch. Knoblauch pulled a fastball from Wall down the line in a fastball count, but even if Brown wanted to throw the straight fastball, he was consistently reaching 97 mph in that game and Knoblauch could not have gotten around on it and pulled the fastball the way he did with Wall's far slower fastball. Although this was in the NL, Brown allowed those 8 home runs in 257 innings in an NL in which Big Mac and Sosa hit 70 and 66, respectively, and his own teammate Greg Vaughn hit 50 despite a drought between 49 and 50. What's so amazing about Brown is that he continued to be the great groundball pitcher while also developing into a dominant strikeout pitcher with more 4-seamers to change the hitter's eye level and a really hard splitter that went straight down. As good as this Padre team was, they weren't even playing at their full potential. They essentially had to take care of an amazing Braves team without Vaughn, Finley showed the ability to hit for power throughout his 30s, except for this season, and Caminiti was still a great hitter when reasonably healthy, but he was injured seriously enough to severely limit him.

    David Wells is a native of San Diego. Mark Langston gave up the grand slam to Tino Martinez. Kevin Brown had the flu. Jim Leyritz would return to the yankees in 1999 and would redeem himself. Unfortunately David Wells would be traded to the Blue Jays for Roger Clemens.
