Most Picturesque English Village: Selworthy (Exmoor, Somerset)

- Come with us as we explore the charming village of Selworthy in Somerset, nestled in the expansive Holnicote Estate. With hikes to the coast and views over vast swathes of Exmoor from Selworthy Beacon, this picturesque English village is not to be missed!
We started the day in our lovely cabin in Porlock Weir, Somerset, where we were invited to stay by The Best of Exmoor (*www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk/274... and use the code lozsleisure to get £30 off any holiday cottage stay!). After a lovely morning watching the birds (with the birdfeed we picked up in Minehead), we drove for around 15 minutes to Selworthy.
We parked up in the National Trust car park, which was just past the church and had a fee of £1 in an honesty box. We first headed into the medieval church but unfortunately it was closed for repairs. Nonetheless, we stood just inside its main doors and enjoyed the glorious views it provides over Exmoor. We then wandered down towards the village green to have our first view of a thatched roof of one of the cottages.
Before we went for a cream tea it was time to go on a short hike up to Selworthy Beacon. This took us through some beautiful woodland with ridiculously tall trees. As we came out of the woodland we made our way to Bury Castle, where an iron age hillfort used to stand. We then cut across some land towards the coast where we had views down over Bossington and Porlock and could even see where we were staying!
We carried on the walk through the gorse and along to Selworthy Beacon, which had views of the surrounding moorland and over the Bristol channel all the way to Wales.
We then completed our loop back to Selworthy (with a sandwich stop en route) and walked around the village green surrounded by picturesque thatched cottages. Periwinkle Cottage is also a tearoom so we stopped here in the glorious sunshine for a cream tea, where we were fortunate enough to try whortleberry jam, local to the region.
After a brilliant time exploring Selworthy, we headed down to Bossington and made our way to the beach. It was super blustery but gave us the opportunity to have a look at the World War Two defensive structures built here and check out an old kiln. We then headed back to Porlock Weir for dinner in the town at The Bottom Ship.

So quintessentially English , a beautiful place to visit . I really enjoyed the drone footage too. I was salivating when I saw the scones!😋
So true!! And knew the scones would be right up your street... even if you would put the cream on top of the jam (the wrong way round!!! 😉). Love you!!!
I so enjoy the long hikes that you and Hannah take. ❤
So do we! Always worth it for the view and packed lunch (and cream teas!!!)
Hope you are doing well ❤️
Big Love my friends I really enjoyed see you smile and having fun, the views of your country are breath taking love all the birds and horses too. Hi Howard! 👋
Hey Howard! So glad you enjoyed this one. Seeing those lovely goldfinches so close for the first time was amazing for me and the scones were just delicious 😋 we didn't brave the sea (again!). Big love!

They can be pretty idyllic!!
Thanks!
And thank you! ❤️🙏
Awesome view
Yes it was!! Thanks so much for watching!
Lovely vlog, Loz, and lovely to see Porlock Weir again :)
Thank you!!! Such a lovely little place right?!
I'll never forget my first visit to Porlock, that is, the infamous 1 in 4 Hill, in the 1950's. I was 18, my first old banger of a car. It stalled on the first bend, I had to reverse all the way down. Unknown to me, there was a alternative, less hilly road, lower down, with a toll to pay, and took longer to reach Lynmouth. But we got there safely.
i can see how passionate you are in traveling and vlogging. This inspired me to travel and explore more. Hope to meet you soon bro. Keep it up!
Ahhh I'm glad to hear it! Thank you so much for watching and so pleased you're going to be exploring more. Where's next on the list?
Wow,happy video😊
Thank you 🤗 we had such a good time!
Great video once again. I have visited Selworthy, but I must confess that I didn’t go for the hike, just the cream tea.😊.
Thank you, Sandra! 🙏✨ Haha well we're glad you didn't miss out on the best bit! Did you get it from Periwinkle Tearoom too?
Yes, I did. Delicious!!!! The North Devon/Somerset coast is my favourite.
@@sandraceney9548 we were surprised at how quiet it seemed even on the bright days! Although I suppose we were there in May so it would be a lot busier in summer perhaps? Have you visited a lot? What’s your experience been in terms of crowdedness there?
We only visited once, some years ago. It would have been in the school holidays, so I remember it being busy.
Wonderful Somerset, but like most of Britain, for maximum pleasure, the weather has to be on your side.
Glorious place! But agree, we were lucky with the weather!
Nice bird shots! Is that zoom camera still available to buy anywhere?
If there’s one person I know will always enjoy them it’s you, Imo! Looks like it’s 380 from Argos! www.argos.co.uk/product/8648309
Really falls apart in the lowlight but I usually shoot 4k in daylight when filming wildlife with it and tbh I doubt there’s a better option in that size! If doing it with a DSLR / mirrorless the lens would have to be so long!
@@LozsLeisure omg thank you so much!!! You changed it I think? Didn’t you used to have a Sony zoom cam? I had looked it up from links but it was always unavailable.
@@PlanetImo I actually just changed all the links as I haven't looked at those in so long! They should be correct on this vid and moving forward now 😊 always used a Sony as my main cam but that's evolved from the RX range to the ZV range! Can't beat the zoom on that Canon though 🔍
@@LozsLeisure thank you very much. I think I may well buy that Canon zoomy cam. It could be the answer to what I’m looking for.
@@PlanetImo what's the problem you have / your need? Just looking for a long zoom in a compact size?
What camera do you use, if not a secret? :)
Not at all a secret!
Main vlogging camera: amzn.to/3QShL5o (Sony ZV-1)
Zoom vlogging camera: amzn.to/3E6I6VP (Canon HS740 SX)
Drone: amzn.to/45FmTxM (DJI Air 2S)
Action cam: amzn.to/3KRPk3A (GoPro Hero 11)
Hope that helps!
@@LozsLeisure Wow! What an interesting setup :) But why to use two cameras with fixed optic instead of one camera with different optic? I'm looking for a new camera for my blog (not this channel), and I think I'll buy Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K + different optic :)
@@MakarovSoftware both are variable so the ZV-1 is my main cam (24-70mm equivalent) as it has better stabilisation and options for me. Then the Canon has a much longer zoom (24-960mm equivalent I think), which allows me to get some great wildlife shots!
Ideally I would love to upgrade to the ZV-E1 with a wide lens I think!
Blackmagic! VERY nice 😁 why do you think this is the best option for you?
@@LozsLeisure Sarcasm? 😅Actually it costs not much comparing to your set)) Many reasons why: first of all it's a professional VIDEO cam, not a photo) Then I work in DaVinci and it looks like perfect match with this cam) And I really want to learn how to shoot beautiful things in RAW or ProRES codecs, learn what could I take from it... And so on) By the way I'm working in all controlled environments - I can set up light, position, focus, ISO and everything else, of course it's unreal to make such vlogs from hand on this cam 😄
@@MakarovSoftware not at all, was just curious 😊 yeah I was on a video shoot recently and one of the videographers filming us used a Blackmagic and it did look awesome. You’re right, with a more controlled environment (and of course a lot of skill!) you’re sure to get a load out of it! Are the lenses expensive?
