"Canis Vertex had been brought down on the killing fields of Coriovallum in the last days of the
war by a gargantuan war machine of the greenskin, crudely built in the image of their warlike gods. Defeat seemed inevitable until Magnus stood before the enemy colossus, wielding the power of the aether like an ancient god of war.
Two giants, one mechanical, one a flesh and blood progeny of the Emperor, they had faced each
other across the burning ruins, and it seemed the battle’s conclusion could not have been more foregone.
But Magnus raised his arms, his feathered cloak billowed by unseen storms, and the full fury of
the aether unmade the enemy war-engine in a hurricane of immaterial fire that tore the flesh of reality asunder and shook the world to its very foundations. "

Ahriman has been forced to fail by Tzeentch pretty much every time. Spoilers ahead!
When casting the first Rubric, Tzeentch had sabotaged the Book of Magnus - the grimoire that Ahriman used to formulate the spell. When casting the second Rubric, he was simultaneously being severely fucked over by a shard of Magnus, the inquisition, the Changeling, and a legion of sorcerers led by a former ally of his. Despite all that the second Rubric succeeded in completely restoring one Rubric marine - Helio Isidorus (and that was way before Yvraine got to prominence).

One of the things that I love about the lore and writing concerning the Primarchs and Big Daddy E during the Great Crusade and the Heresy was that despite the fact that they were pretty much the absolute apex of humanity - in terms of intellect, ambition and raw power - they were still very flawed. Most of the events that turned the galaxy to what it is today can be traced to them simply making mistakes or being arrogant in their superiority. Even if they were the most perfect humans to ever exist, they were still human.

      @@shootinbruin3614 here’s hoping!
Hoping for some Magnus rewrites myself, idk!
There’s many pieces there for a good old tragedy, they’re just assembled kind of weirdly.
The whole thirst for knowledge and arrogance leading to the downfall of a good lad, all that craic.
Doesn’t really hit home properly with the combination of ‘The Emperor chose to make him the psycher Primarch and sit on the Golden Throne’ and ‘not teach him about the warp bar telling him not to do the things he was created for’.
It would both fit the ‘arrogance was his downfall’ arc, be more tragic and also not make Big E seem like an idiot to have Magnus’ fall come after the Emperor properly takes him under his wing and teach him the ways, outline his vision for Magnus’ future etc.
Then have the Red guy get cocky and do something dumb because he thinks he knows better than the Emperor.
I dunno, I do like Magnus so I’m a little biased but the whole saga also makes Big E look like an idiot, plus instead of Magnus’ hubris being his downfall, it’s partly ‘Magnus doesn’t know shit because nobody told him’ half the time.
The Emperor’s bad relationship with many of the Primarchs in other cases I don’t find as jarring because it’s his distance and coldness, which make absolute sense being an almost god. With Magnus it’s just baffling really.

  • @willhiggins9563
    @willhiggins9563 Před 4 lety +15

I think the reason behind the ‘Magnus did nothing wrong’ meme is that if you genuinely consider his POV and motives, you start to understand. His psychic powers set him part on his home planet and among his brothers. Clearly the Emperor wanted him to be that strongest psycer for a reason. And most would argument that the best defense against things like the terrors of the Warp, or Chose would be knowledge. Because the Emperor kept Chose a secret from his sons, of course Magnus would not see the logic of not exploring the Warp. He also only ever made his bargains with Tzeentch in first place to stop his sons from becoming monsters, and then to warn the Emperor about Horus. Even fully joining Tzeentch was just to save his Legion and home.
His biggest weakness definitely seemed to be over estimating his own knowledge.
Also, I couldn't help but notice a lot of similarities between him and the Emperor, mainly that all their failures stem from their good intentions. And that both of them had their souls shattered into shards.
I also have a theory. The Emperor created Magnus to be his ultimate weapon against Tzeentch. I base if off the fact that Tzeentch seemed to need Magnus to break through the psychic barrier put up by the Emperor. That implies Magnus has potential for powers Tzeentch didn't. And it would be well with in character for a Chose god, especially Tzeentch, to turn a weapon against them into their puppet.

To me, Magnus is one of the most tragic of the traitor primarchs, because honestly, literally until the moment he became a demon prince, he was doing everything he thought was right for the Imperium and his father. It says something about the Emperor that Magnus broke his father's command to warn that Horus had been turned by Chaos and started a rebellion, and the Big E's immediate reaction was to assume that Magnus was a traitor instead, and send Lehman Russ, his executioner, after him.

Magnus did not ignore Leman's parley request. Horus had planted a spy inside the Space Wolves on Fenris just about the time when Horus went bald heretic mode. The wolves of Fenris knew immediately that the person who had landed on their planet was a spy but they thought he was sent by Magnus and there was no reason to suspect Horus of this bullshittery. At the council of Nikea, Horus (or some bullshit chaos daemon) impersonated Amon Tauromachian, captain of the thousand sons and attacked the spy infront of a couple of space wolves and a custodes and said that his mission had failed since he couldnt gather any intelligence and Magnus was on trial at Nikea. When the whole warp gate shit happened, and emperor had it with Magnus's psychic shenanigans, he sent Leman Russ to bring him to Terra for judgement and Leman on the way to Prospero kept talking to the spy, hoping that Magnus would be listening, and saying please surrender and come peacefully. Obviously, it was Horus on the other end, not Magnus. And that's how tzeentch had played a check mate as far as getting Magnus out of the imperium was concerned.

I wouldn't sully myself by playing traitors or Xenos, but if I did it would be with Thousand Sons. I don't play much 40k at all these days, but I really like their mechanics and lore

You forgot that the Thousand Sons also are getting clapped by one of the Necron dynasties. Probably because the necrons don't like someone else cramping on their space Egyptian theme.

Thousand Sons are backed to Legion numbers. They have Billions of Traitor Guardsmen, Cultists and Rogue Psykers under their command
Ahriman can teleport an entire Necron Army to Tzeentch's domain in the Warp

There's is a very diffrent difference between the sorcery and psyker power. Psyker powers come from the warp directly and only be done by psykers. sorcery however is warp magic that come indirectly from the warp like from a tome or a demon and anyone (except blanks) can do sorcery.

A question i have, what if Magnus considering that there was like arround a thousand marines was sent as a supporting legion in especially dificult situations?
I mean if Lorgar was supposed to be weakest of Primarchs in terms of combat his weakness could be counteracted by Magnus and Thousand Sons being the type of "If they don't comply have Magnus back you up since your slow compliance rate".

Lorgar didnt have high combat stats because he had top tier charisma, surpassed only by Horus, but while Horus was able to convince importa t individuals Lorgar was better at converting crows. His role was to spread the Imperial Truth, combat was a secondary role. Most of the primarchs follow that pattern of Role First, Combat Second (Horus a leader, Guilliman an administrator, Konrad a judge, etc)
Magnus role was likely to sit on the Golden Throne and his thousand sons to care and maintain the human webway.

"Balls to the wall with psychic powers" is a good way of describing what Magnus did.
