- Canadians paid their respects to former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney for a second day on Friday, ahead of his funeral in Ottawa.
The former prime minister died on Feb. 29 in Florida at 84 years old.
His wife Mila, and children Caroline, Ben, Mark and Nicholas, greeted mourners in Ottawa as he lies in state in the country’s capital.
Global’s Dawna Friesen spoke to Ben Mulroney about his father’s legacy, his parents’ lasting love and the support his family has received from Canadians.

actually this is pretty strange. He was an OK PM...one of many.... but he died on Feb 29th...in a couple of days it will be 4 wks since he died. The British buried the Queen of England , who was excellent for 70 years, in less than 2 wks.

I saw Brian & Mila at the airport in Montreal in early 2000's. He was still shaking hands and kissing babies in retirement. Mila was encouraging him not to miss their flight.Very charismatic! 🇨🇦

I immigrated to Canada in 2010. Since then, I had dedicated a lot of time learning about Canadian politics and politicians, with a focus on party leaders and PMs. Two seem to be highly thought of and even loved by all Canadians: Brian Mulroney and Jack Layton. RIP both.

I was shocked the family stood there receiving people the whole time. I had assumed it would just be for the dignataries. I can’t imagine how exhausting that was for them. Physically & emotionally. ❤

It's so nice to see a loving family who actually cared about Canadians. My father's business thrived under Mulroney and it's so nice to see that Mila and the kids admired him too.

What a beautiful ceremony. My heart goes out to Mila. I know what it is like to be the one who is left, it gets worse before it gets better. I loved Brians sense of humour, and that wonderful voice. He seemed a very friendly person, and always had a smile on his face. He will be greatly missed.

I’ll never forget I drew a picture of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney as a child for my teacher. She laughed so much because I got his chin just right. I like to believe Prime Minister Mulroney would have loved that story of his exaggerated chin making an elementary teacher laugh. I appreciate his service to our country. RIP and may his memory serve for Blessing. 🙏 🇨🇦🙏

Just a beautiful funeral, Brian Mulroney was a great example of being a Father & husband, I pray for his soul.

I thank the U.S. for sending a representative to give an eulogy. I believe Brian gave eulogies for Presidents Reagan and Bush Senior. Was very disappointed that the U.K. did nothing.. They should be ashamed. 😊

Is that Brian who in the early 90's got 225k at a donut shop and "forgot" to report it as income until he had a "dream" . The guy who gave it to him Karlheinz Schreiber was convicted of income tax evasion in Germany On retrial in 2013, Schreiber was sentenced to six and a half years in prison
Mulroney sued the government of Canada and the people of Canada for libel, and in early 1997 received a $2.1 million (CDN) settlement and an apology. During an examination under oath, Mulroney claimed that he hardly knew Schreiber, and had had no business dealings with him.
Mulroney has since admitted to receiving $225,000 from Schreiber, in cash, and not reporting this in his income tax returns until eight years later, subsequent to Schreiber's indictment in Germany for bribery, tax evasion and fraud and extradition order from Canada.
Schreiber's Canadian dealings are also featured in two books by William Kaplan: in 1998, Kaplan wrote Presumed Guilty: Brian Mulroney, the Airbus Affair, and the Government of Canada, and in 2004, followed up on the latest developments in A Secret Trial: Brian Mulroney, Stevie Cameron, and the Public Trust.
