What’s driving Germany’s far-right AfD resurgence?

  • Eighty years after the invasion of Normandy and the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany, the far-right is resurfacing with alarming force.
Nationalist parties are surging in politics across Europe, including Germany, where polling shows one in five people now supports the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party.
Dawna Friesen reports from Berlin on how immigration is one of the biggest drivers for those shifting sentiments. She also speaks to members of Identitäre Bewegung (Generation Identity), a far-right group that Germany's domestic security agency has classified as extremist.

Not every German soldier during World War II was considered to be a Nazi. The term "Nazi" specifically refers to a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP), which was the political party led by Adolf Hitler. Many German soldiers were conscripts or volunteers who served in the military (the Wehrmacht) for various reasons, including duty to their country, conscription, or personal beliefs unrelated to Nazi ideology.
While the Nazi regime controlled Germany and its military forces, and many soldiers supported or were influenced by Nazi propaganda, not all of them were party members or fully subscribed to Nazi ideology. The Nazi Party had its own paramilitary organizations, such as the SS (Schutzstaffel), which were more directly tied to the party and its ideological goals.
In summary, being a German soldier did not automatically mean being a Nazi, although the military was under the command of the Nazi regime.

    Dearest honourable electorate of Germany,
I sincerely beseech you to consider voting for the AfD during the next federal election to justly preserve the very essence of your intellectual, cultural, political and constitutional identity. In essence, this may be the last opportunity to do so in displaying patriotic homage to your world class nation in the most strategic sense.
I can assure you that you shall reap the rewards during future generations by restoring purity and confidence in the order to your noble democracy ⚖
The very definition of libertarian values constitutes an unwavering determination to democratically enforce the protection of your distinct identity by legal mandate. Naturally, such a victory for the AfD during the next election shall effortlessly secure this. There is no reason for you to feel a sense shame for wishing to halt the decomposition/rot of your society in response to an unjust invasion which was illegally imposed upon your renowned society.
It is the equivalent of throwing an ancient piece of classical literature/art into a swamp. This is not a deformity that you or any nation in Europe was destined to inherit, nor should you feel personally accountable to/responsible for a hostile entity in league with a foreign enemy. “The sins of the father are not the sins of the son.”
This is now a matter that concerns every single nation in Continental Europe in which we must intellectually collaborate to destroy the evil within our borders.
As the ancient proverb details “virtue cannot prosper in the presence of evil. This can only occur when the latter has been unequivocally executed by the democratic sword of justice.”
With every essence of democratic valour,
your fellow Continental European allies (in the United Kingdom) 🇩🇪❤⚜➡💡
