@@paulgraham7443 I always find it interesting that people such as yourself who don't work in and probably never will work in the videogames industry think they know more about videogames development than those who work in the industry. I always get amazed at the amount of people that complain about developers fixing things later. At least they can do that now. Do you remember the days where games consoles couldn't be connected to the internet? If released on a cartridge or a disc and it had bugs there wasn't necessarily an easy fix. Where as now developers can at least release patches that can be downloaded which can resolve the issue. There is far bigger things in life to worry about than a patch to fix a bug or something which is broken on a game.

I got a PS3 a couple years ago from a friend at work. I ended up adding homebrew and replacing the HDD with a 1TB SSD. I still play on it frequently. it plays PS1 and PS2 games just fine. The major downside is what Austin alluded to. The PS3 has HDCP protection baked into the hardware, so you can't stream from it easily. I've seen people buy cheap HDMI splitters that supposedly strip that protection, but I'm not in a position to test that theory.

Hi Joshua, glad to hear about your love for PS consoles. If you have a Switch, try playing Overcooked! with her, it’s a great & fun co-op game with lots of content. Switch Sports and Mario Party are good choices for non-gamers as well. For the PS5, check out It Takes Two and A Way Out, both are from the same developer and focus mainly on co-op. My wife and I loved the latter, she finds It Takes Two too challenging for her novice skills. And if you guys like story-driven thrillers that are easy to play, definitely try Heavy Rain. You mentioned you like all Xbox but 360. I’m the opposite, I only like the 360 lol. If you can find a cheap 360, do try playing Kinect with your wife. She might love Dance Central, Kinect Sports, or even Zumba!

    I always enjoyed the PS3.
While the PS3 original 60GB model did have full backwards compatibility to PS1 & PS2 discs, but one of the bestest thing I liked about the console is that due to the way the console was designed, as long as you have a portable drive that’s in a FAT32 format (USB flash drive is already in this format) you can actually transfer any compatible digital (video & audio) files you may have laying around in a external drive and in your computer.
Meaning that if you happen to have a bunch of movies or TV shows digitally saved somewhere that’s compatible to play on the PS3, as long as you have a decent internal space in the console and have any USB flash drives just sitting around, you can actually store a very large amount of TV shows on your console. You can’t actually do this on the PS4 or PS5. 😞

One reason the 360 store works so well is because of backwards compatibility. A few games (probably for legal reasons) have to be bought through the old xbox marketplace in a web browser or on a 360 even if they're enhanced and you just want to play them on a Series S/X. So not only does backwards compatibility let you play old games on Series S/X, but it's also probably a huge reason why old 360s are still so functional today.

My stance on the Wii is that the backwards compatible one is still very playable but the Wii-only versions are not. This is not due to the Wii games but the lack of GameCube support. The Wii took a major risk design-wise with the Wiimote and nunchuck but there are a lot of good games that run better with a proper controller and the Wii controller expansions drain batteries too fast.
I’m so glad I was able to get a backwards compatible Wii from a thrift store a couple of years ago, it was $10 for just the console so I stole the wires from my other one. It even had Wii Sports that I was able to sell for $15 to a pawn shop shortly after, keeping my copy so I effectively got paid $5 to take a Wii.

She never does that. We go to EB Games. I'm even more confused, hoping she's about to surprise me. The lady in front of us is returning a wii. My grandmother goes up and asks to buy a wii. The guy says this is the only one but it's sealed, asks if she's okay buying it. She does.
She spent like the next 2ish years proclaiming "why don't people just go to the store and buy a wii machine ? There is no shortage. I got one just fine." Not realizing the lottery she'd just won.

I guess the 360 is the most usable for apps and stuff today, but the Wii and PS3 have the most modding potential. Personally, I see more value in owning a PS3 compared to a 360 because the Series consoles have some backwards compatibility and the best, most iconic games work on modern hardware. Meanwhile, all PS3 games are trapped on the PS3, unless you want to stream at 720p, lol. I would rank the consoles from this time period as
    1. PS3
    2. Modded Wii
    3. 360

Interestingly the PS3 is actually *forward* compatible, if you plug a DS4 or dualsense controller into a PS3 it will actually work.
