What Has Happened To Russian Football?

  • Today we're taking a look at what has happened to football in Russia in the year since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the sporting sanctions that followed.
It’s pretty mad to think that less than five years ago Russia hosted the World Cup, the globe’s biggest sporting event in terms of viewership, welcoming millions of fans from around the world to a tournament that was ultimately very successful for the country.
The host nation went on a memorable run to the quarter-finals, beating former champions Spain en route; president Vladimir Putin seemingly proved his claim that Russia was "an open, friendly and hospitable country" following concerns about the country’s hooligan culture with a tournament largely devoid of fan violence; and four years after the annexation of Crimea, which led to years of military conflict in eastern Ukraine, and just months after the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal on British soil, an attack which despite Russia’s continued denials of having any involvement in led to them being condemned by multiple western nations, the tournament helped consolidate Putin’s position on the world stage, rubbing shoulders with a number of world leaders and FIFA president Gianni Infantino in front of tens of millions of television viewers.
Subsequently, St Petersburg was awarded the 2022 Champions League final, and Russia hosted seven games at the delayed Euro 2020 tournament in the summer of 2021 - only England hosted more - as they bid to host the tournament in 2028. But less than 12 months after that, the picture of Russian football could not have looked more different, after FIFA and UEFA made a joint-decision to suspend the country’s national teams and clubs from participating in their tournaments following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which Putin labelled a “special military operation.”
This has led to a mass exodus of players from the previously lucrative Russian Premier League, the national teams having almost no one to play against, and reports that Russia’s football federation are considering the possibility of leaving UEFA to join the Asian Football Confederation.

You got to also remember that some players are worried about speaking out against the conflict, with former Russian international; Igor Denisov mentioning that he fears he would've been imprisoned or killed for speaking out against the war. Don't forget, the president of Lukoil (the 2nd biggest oil company and owners of Spartak Moscow); Ravil Maganov called the war a tragedy and hoped that the situation could be resolved peacefully. On September 1st, 2022, Vladimir Putin was visiting a hospital where Maganov was receiving treatment and the Lokoil president would die later that day after falling from the 6th story of the hospital.

I don't care if I get hate but Russia should not have been banned at all.
Sports are sports and throughout history there has been countries at war and nobody banned them for competing.
The only time I heard that was Yugoslavia but again I will always find that unfair no matter what.
If that's the case why was Saudi Arabia allowed to play the world cup if they are attacking Yemen.
Why were Azerbaijan and Armenia allowed to play in the middle of the Nagorno Karabaj war and UEFA didn't suspend neither of them
Also kind of disappointed how Poland was given a free pass to qualify for Qatar 2022 when Sweden and Czech Republic had to play 1 more game than Poland.
Just look who is organizing the world cup 2026. It is USA and even after USA has destroyed countries like Iraq in recent times they will still participate in a world cup qualifier even after that country caused a lot of suffering in Iraq.

The issues are just as much down to practicality as much as any moral position UEFA or FIFA have taken.
Russia has pretty much closed its borders so you can’t travel play any games there.
The only other option would be to get someone else to host them, but it would only likely be somewhere like Belarus but that may have the same issue.
If UEFA/FIFA even tried to get them involved again whilst the war is ongoing then I suspect the teams, sponsors and players would immediately kick up a stink and boycott it.
UEFA/FIFA probably want them in there for financial reasons but I can’t see it happening whilst the war is ongoing and border situation remains as is.

Oh and you hadn't mentioned the biggest topic about russian football nowadays for ones who still follows russian football: goverment has approved a law about fan ID. It's the same system which they used during world cup, but now it's working for a top-tier domestic competition. It works pretty much the same as turkish Passolig: you need to register and give authorities data about yourself if you want to buy a ticket.
Almost every fan group of every club (except for Akhmat but it's a whole other topic) are standing against such law and because of that they don't visit the stadiums. Attendance has fallen down dramatically. Only during covid restrictions attendance was lower, and not by far lower.
So not only the quality of a game had decreased and competitive interest (because clubs don't enter uefa competitions) had disappeared, government does everything to prevent fans of going to the stadiums. And nobody knows whether the situation will change or not.

Ukrainian football, unfortunately, was post-soviet and is still trash. Dependent only on donations from owners and sponsors (not many willing), no prize money at any stage, tv translation pay almost nothing. Only if you get into Conference league can u get hands on some extra cash. And there's also the scandal with Football Federations head going behind nats and a good portion of the federation's staff being post-ussr football legends turned football politician without proper stuff in their heads...not to mention that almost all foreigners left Shakhtar and the only thing the club can do is attempt to sue FIFA...
The only thing invasion did any different was wreck a stadium in Chernihiv...and some players did join the war..
