  • Will this summer be the moment when an England team finally ends the 58-year wait to lift a major men's trophy? Or will it be more disappointment for Gareth Southgate's much-fancied side?
Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool and England international centre-back who was part of the squad for the 2004 tournament, makes his picks using Telegraph Sport's interactive predictor.
Two years ago Carragher successfully predicted Argentina would win the 2022 World Cup - has he identified the eventual winner again this time around? He has England reaching the latter stages in Germany...

They are the most likely to have a third placer with just 1 or 2 points. The groups where 1 team is obviously the whipping boy (on paper) will more likely have third place teams on 3 points.

The problem with England is that the players are drawn from too many league teams. Yes, they might all be good players for their clubs, but the defenders don't play for the same club as each other, or the goalkeeper, the midfielders don't play for the same club as each other and the forwards are also drawn from different clubs. That causes communication problems, which can't all be resolved by practising in training and by playing friendlies. That bond comes from many hours of playing competitive games with each other. The Premier League may be touted as 'the best league in Europe', attracting overseas players to it, but this is at the expense of being able to form an England team that works well.

Let`s see, based on that argument it isn't looking bad for England. Kane best player in the Bundesliga, Bellingham best player in La Liga and Foden best player in the Premier League. Problem might be the defense, but Maguire has actually been pretty good for Man Utd this season. I don't know if it's always the case, some players do very well despite having a poor season and the other way round. Looking forward to the tournament anyway, maybe there will be a big surprise like Denmark and Greece in the past.

Regarding Germany, there are some striking similarities to the 2002 World Cup. In both cases the team was in crisis because they had clung to a once-successful coach for too long (Vogts/Löw), then experienced a desastrous tournament with their next coach (Ribbeck 2000/Flick 2004), then Völler took over and gave the team a restart with an unexpected victory over a great team (Spain in 2000, France in 2023). And in both cases Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund had reached the European Cup finals, only with the competitions changed. In 2002, Germany had a great World Cup, mainly because the key players like Kahn, Ballack, Schneider, Neuville and Klose could take their great performances from the season over to the World Cup. Also this year some individual players have had great club seasons - obviously the ones from Bayer Leverkusen, but also Rüdiger and Kroos at Madrid and Havertz at Arsenal. Everything depends on if they manage to keep the form or if the long season has sucked all energy out of their legs.

I think Germany are much stronger than the last three tournaments are telling. Their main problem was that three times in a row they lost their first match, which put them in a difficult position right from the start. As far as I remember, in all of German history it had happened only once before (1982). This is why the opener against Scotland will be crucial. If they get off to a good start, it might be a very, very different Germany altogether.
