LETS GOOOOOO S TIER BOC cant wait for them in 4th!
Book so good they knew they couldn't top it 😢
Right in the feels 😢
Actually, you might have to wait a while 🙃
Moo 😢
Spot on with the Cities analysis, such wasted potential. A guy in my club mixes and matches the different races for his units, e.g. his Steelhelm units include old Dwarf warriors side by side with Dark Elf city guard, converted to have matching weapons and shields. Beautiful army, and exactly how I would imagine a Cities army looks like in the lore, maybe a good idea for others if they ever squat the non-human units?
I would find it easier to mix and match if there were no specific dwarf/elf rules. Then my marauder era dwarfs could be steelhelms etc, but with the 3rd ed book it would be too confusing for my opponent.
1) i love this
2) they aren't squatting non-humans in Cities anytime soon. The faction's core mechanic revolves around buffing different races during different phases
I disagree with most of your opinion (about the tomes), which made this video even more fun to watch! Thanks a lot Rob!
and thats why slaanesh, nighthaunt and sylvaneth are my favorite armies, the play and feel like how they look and what they are. they are the perfect example of how to bring the lore of the faction into the actual game in a creative way.
When Nighthaunt's book came out, I'd have put it in S tier for creativity and uniqueness. Then every other Death army got everything good from that book with heaps of extras, so I'd say NH book ended 4E in C or D tier.
Nighthaunt scare mechanic should have rolled against bravery. Ghosts scaring demons is ridiculous
Temptation dice were a great, creative mechanic on paper with maybe the worst implementation. 95% of the time your opponent would say no to all of them to keep you off your army’s special rule so until you got depravity via other means you were just playing with no army rule.
I’m interested if Rob will do a tier list based on what was fun to play or what army actually felt like their lore on the table top. In both aspects I would put most of chaos factions in the D tier (Khorne, Slaanesh, S2D, and Tzeetch all missed the mark this edition imo)
Really nice to see a creativity Tier list! Super interesting video (I love game mechanisms in general)
Definitely need a ‘living’ tier list for faction focus as they’re released
I am BOC player, so v1 was short, v2 was long with v1 battletome, v3 was that damn awesome and v4 will be sad. That’s all folks
Love your work Rob, this is one video where timestamps would be super helpful
I feel so seen with your thoughts on Cities. Before the book came out, I used to consider my main army (amongst many strong contenders), but after release it hated the gutting of all of the Johnny elements of listbuilding the book used to offer so much that I literally haven’t played a single game with them since. Which is super sad, but there you have it.
Hopefully their 4th rules are way more up my alley, but in the meantime, I’m just grateful that I am also super psyched for the numerous armies I now have for The Old World!
Thanks for all the content you make Rob 👍👍👍
This is great! Thank you
Feels like you’re doing all kind of ens of year review, feels like the holydays are coming
Great video! I'm a sucker for tier lists. I disagree with you about Nighhaunt! I think you make some solid points about NH thematically, but mechanically I'd put NH in D tier. Not because of effectiveness (which has fluctuated), but in actual design. 2 of the processions encourage single unit spam and one deals anywhere between 0-80 mortal wounds across the game with no meaningful play or counter play from either player. Scarlet Doom encouraged oops all bladegheist lists, but with their fat bases and 1" range they were remarkably fiddly to get a full unit of 10 attacking any target and remaining in coherency (this was fixed, but only just earlier this year). Wave of terror is a fun and flavorful ability, but after I played 4 games in a row without a single unit rolling a 10+ on any charge, combined with the above problems, I switched to only playing 40K for the last couple years.
New faction focus has me stoked though! They've more or less revealed that they're addressing all of the problems that I had with them between the wider AoS rules and the NH specific rules. Actually finished painting a unit or two that have been sitting in storage the very same day as the faction focus!
Once again, love the content and I'm excited to see you cover more as we jump into the new edition.
I hope they put much more effort into the 4th ed tzeentch tome. Im on the FEC train now because that book was so exciting, but would love to get hype about my first and now neglected army
Another thing that is very unique about the BOC is that they are the only faction with a sub-faction specific unit in the Morghurite Chaos-Spawn
Can’t wait to see what’s they’ve done with Skaven! Might be left behind in the power curve as the edition progresses, but at least it won’t be a copy/paste job!
Skaven codex was my first lol got it for Christmas along with the Vanguard box (haven't looked back since)
Fyreslayer rallies work, it’s been a common mention since AoS1 they’re so resilient that they get up and keep fighting from wounds that would kill a lesser warrior, and then go collect their pay. Plus they’re shrewd mercenaries that don’t want to die and leverage runic protection to prolong their lives which fits.
Their tome should get an extra point for the new Path to Glory alone. A slow and steady grow of honorable merc work with better Reputation to bring more warrriors under their Lodge vs having your Fyreslayers fight for chaos coin which soars their vaults to bursting instead but all their territories wither and Reputation plummets is such a awesome concept for the fiery mercenary monks.
Hope their next wave gives them the Warcry treatment and we get more lava dragon Hoplites/cavaliers & fire egg guardians. 🔥 🐉
I hope Fyreslayers get more model/role diversity and the Ur Gold Runes stay but without the roll. Units should get the effect and heroes get the extra bit and balance accordingly. Choosing which rune to use and when is great for skill expression, hoping you roll 6 (or 5+) on a die is bad design
No flannel? Must be warming up across the pond.
we are getting even more simplified flavour reduced battletome in 4de edition based on how empty the new warscrolls feel sadly. i rly hope the new tomes will contain some as of yet un named special rules additions.
So hard to not bring power or play into this list
I mean trees all day every day, but do love my ghosties!
I dont know Rob, but i feel like he's just a good ass dude.
Hopefully they move those BoC rules to Kruleboyz.
You've said the Ogroid Theridons are just the new minotaurs a couple of times, but Ogroids have been a thing in the game/lore for a long time and they've never been Minotaurs. Look at the face, it's not a bull at all!
They're allied to Chaos because the orks destroyed their empire and they wanted power for revenge.
(It's also kind of ironic that in the lore they hate being called Minotaurs)
PS. Mutalith Vortex Beast is a Slaves to Darkness unit! >_
Yep, Ogroids deserve more respect as their own unique race that had its own civilization, laws and master forge works.
There’s a reason they rise so high in everything they try from being top disciples of Tzeentch to conquering the gladiator rings and leading them instead.
The Goroan Empire shall rise again!! 💪
Zombie bites are infectuous. So that damage on death actually does fit.
And in Ogors the new Mawpit subfaction is very good and thematic. Play it. It is truly great. Great Maw.
Excellent video, of course. Just adding.
There is a tithe mechanic in OBR .. for Path to Glory
cities of sigmar feels the way it does as the same problem that 40k imperial guard have. they reasonably have to pick a "look" if you will. Imperial guard always feels like Cadian vibe. hence AoS is going start feeling like human "castellan" shield wall vibe going forward. not sure they could reasonably do al the variety we think of.
Really hoping that Ephilium's Pandemonium gives us a glimpse into where they're taking Tzeentch in 4th. More cosmic horror and board state mechanics
Fyreslayers really need some more models added to the range.
But isn’t it iconically tzeentch?? The army desperately needs change, which is the point of tzeentch. Haha
Been gone for a bit. What happened to AOS Mondays with Nathan and the guys?
Does anyone feel like we need a ‘normal’ dwarf army?
Also best models tier list! :D
I managed to complet my SCE second half of 3ed, and it was really not fun to find out that for some reason the units l got were never fixed for real. I thought that GW would either give my dudes a big rework in 4th or give them a separate book. GW decided to "fix" the problem in a different way.
Fully agree that the Tzeentch and Lumineth books were quite unthematic and boring to play, though I found Lumineth way more palatable than Tzeentch. Tzeentch in particular felt very slow and clunky, it would take up tons of clock time to do like d3 mortal wounds or shoot with horrors that amounts to like 2 damage. I was sad that I wasn't in the game when people were doing the Kairos & Belakor combo and when Kairos could change charge dice, that would have been such a fun blue/black control deck to play!
OBR are may tax colectors BUT there army is THE best army possible to make out of bones ans souls reknoted and cut away how ever suits them best.
They are very disciplined and there for there army i think is quite on track on how they should be played
Just started the video i assume gitz will be S tier
I think B tier woulda been a better fit for Nighthaunt. Yes, some fun ghosty things, but with no run and charge and no reliable deep striking...they didn't feel fast or ambushy. I was honestly very jealous of the Beasts of Chaos rules in terms of fun/theme/coolness.
After seeing the Darkoath release, I wish they would’ve just combined BoC with StD, and an all BoC force could’ve just been one of the 4 battle formations. They could’ve still squated a good chunk of the BoC range and warcry warbands. Instead I feel like we are going to get a very uninspired Darkoath formation that is going to be ignored for the most part.
Perhaps naively im looking forward to seeing where DoK goes in 4th.
Imagine having 4 models max and having 1 attack each, AND hitting on 4's? Thats bait
Having gotten into AoS via 2nd nighthaunt, I would say A tier.
I really disliked their sub factions as two them forced you to spam one unit. Which then makes taking those units in the other sub factions feel worse. It heavily reduced their list diversity.
I really liked playing the skaven battletome, it was way better than 2.0 - that one was so bad it put me off playing AoS for the whole edition immediately after buying and building the Carrion Empire box
For Khorne as a god of war needing tactics...disagree. The Greeks had Ares as the god of war AND Athena as a god of war. Athena was the strategy and tactics form of war while Ares was the blood and fury and chaos form of war. So Khorne can fill in for Ares and one of the Order gods is probably a better fit for Athena.
Really hoping the GSG tome in 4th is decent
Seraphon on top
based shirt
I disagree about Orruk Warclans. Kruleboyz were consistently the lowest winrate army in third edition. They basically had no mechanics except mortal wounds which was a very repetitive playstyle (dirty tricks is beyond horrible and an absolute nothing sauce). And the playstyle you were forced to play was so castle-y the only thing they were missing was a book of grudges. Both Ironjawz and Kruleboyz suffered massively from the Big Waaagh, as they were both nerfed and played around to make sure that it works. I really hope they break up up the Orks in 4th and give us proper mechanics and subfactions. Sorry for the salt and thanks for the content!
I would like to add the fact that we somehow got the best gitz unit in our roster, the sloggoth, who just doesn't mesh with what the army is trying to do.
Also, speaking of gitz, can we talk about the hobgrots? They exist by themselves as a unit: every kruleboyz unit who have little friendo have a proper gitz. The only hobgrot who isn't in the slittaz unit is a model in Mannok's kunnin krew.
Shout out to Thondia ✊️
Lol seeing hedonites in S is a bit triggering as a slaanesh player. Agree there were thematic elements but awful to play.
Being a player of several factions my favourite age of sigmar 3 battletomes were Skaven and slaves of Darkness , the shear scope for army creation were huge in these books, the ogors were the worst book, literally feel like they threw a new cover on the 2.0 one which was a better book than the 3.0 book
Fyreslayers are NOT slayers of old reimagined, Rob. The aesthetic is somewhat similar (barring those freakish helmets) but the concept is actually very different
They fight to avenge fallen holds while looking for some minerals
“Some minerals”
Literally pieces of their destroyed gods(both Grimnir & Vulcatrix). That’s underselling too much xD
Also the holds are closer to shrines since every volcano in the Mortal Realms was made by their gods exploding(since planes can’t naturally make a volcano without a molten core) so they take them to continue their worship
There’s a very unique religious monk and monster allegiance mixed with a mercenary society to uphold those worships.

I disagree with almost everything xD
We have had it confirmed from people actually working on the model that at no point was Kragnos intended to be anything other than what he is.
That's a lie
@@thehonestwargamerstreams I don't think youtube allows me to post links, but if you google "Kragnos beasts of chaos" there's a very good reddit thread with information about it.
I am sad BoC is gone as much as anyone, but there wasn't a repurposed range. The Ogroids have been in AoS from early on, long before TOW was even announced, much less released.
Im still kinda mad that they removed the ability from the Gothizzar Harvester to also harvest the bones from enemy models to heal your troops via FAQ shortly after release. that was a huger flavor loss, in my opinion.
Gargants are easily the laziest AoS army GW has put out. GW could have done something really interesting by adding more units, like terrain & cheap minions to support the big boys and add some variety to the aesthetic & playstyle, but no. It's literally a minimum effort book to sell a single kit. 🤦♂️
It's 2 kits, that's a 100% increase to the product line
What? Nighthaunt S tier? WTF just happened?
I'd have said
1. Beasts of Chaos - ambushing.
2. Nighthaunts - really felt like ghosts.
3. Megagargants - counting as many models and shooting objectives around the board.
4. Sylvaneth - strike and fade, less interesting ambushing mechanics.
5. Slaanesh - on paper, temptation dice were really cool. In practice, it pigeon holed the faction into shooting lists, which made no sense for a melee army.
And at the bottom, Kharadron Overlords - They took the army with the most unique playstyle and mangled it beyond recognition.
Why does my brain instantly click anything with a tier list? Am I... BASIC??? Seriously tho, awesome analysis - the rules guys have REALLY tried to make some fluffy stuff work with like Noble Deeds or (40k) Sagas; they haven't figured it out yet but you can tell they're trying
We know Kragnos wss never intended for Beasts of Chaos.
I think your own explanation of what happened with BoC and the old world is what makes the most sense. And it does explain the time line. The BoC book would hsve been written near the start of 3.0 where the studio civil was would not have been raging. 2 years in, ToW studio is pulling rank and taking their IP back and management is letting it happen.
I know it was
@@thehonestwargamerstreams Vince says he knows it wasn't. So.....lol
@@markpandelidis2079 Doesn't change what I know to be true but does change your statement as you dismissed my source and took another on faith. So your statement is, I prefer to believe the story about Kragnos from someone else
@@TheHonestWargamer that's fair enough.
@@TheHonestWargamer To be fair to them, you never talked about a source (just said 'in my personal opinion') whereas Vince has said he spoke with one of the lead designers and they said it categorically wasn't intended for BoC, which gives it a bit more weight (and imo is backed up looking at the design language between Kragnos/Kruleboyz/destruction generally)
Obviously you worked for GW and are probably closer to people behind the scenes, so if you say you know then you know, but I wouldn't be surprised if you're both correct in some aspect and the miniature was changed partway through the design process where its current iteration wasn't intended for BoC but the initial concept was.
I must play this game at some point, watched content for years and painted 100s of models yet I still feel I don’t have the mental energy to play. Sigh.
Visit a local shop, it's great and don't need to play at full scale to have fun
