- In this episode, I’m going to show you how to adjust the Rear Suspension on a Honda CBR 250R and why anyone would want to do this.
A softer suspension setting increases riding comfort so that your spine absorbs less of the energy transfer from bumps, but takes less additional load for the shock absober to bottom out.
On the other hand, a stiffer setting will be capable of taking on a heavier load before the suspension bottoms out but will provide a less comfortable ride.

Been looking forever for an explanation on shock adjustment, and you answered my question perfectly with the explanation of the 1-5 issue. The manuals and other videos all used technical or confusing language, you NAILED it, THANKS !!!!!!!!!!
The reason they say adjusting directly from 1 to 5 can cause damage is it is too large a jump. To adjust from 1 to 5, go 1-2-3-4-5, in that direction. Not the direct 1-5 opposite direction.
sorry to be so offtopic but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot the password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Damian Melvin instablaster =)
@Axel Arjun thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Axel Arjun it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
@Damian Melvin No problem :)
BTW, i learned a lot from watching your Videos MR BrownBrady. I like the way you make those and it really helped me in many other DIY stuff.
+Nazeer Hussain That's great. I'm glad my videos have helped. Thanks for watching.
Hey man ya need to post another video soon. I got the same bike and I like learning more about it. love your Chanel hope to see more from ya soon!

Stumbled on this channel... Nice work,... Subbed!
we need more videos from you buddy!!
great man ! is a really easy job. Well done :) I have a Repsol 250CBR-D
awesome video...this is what i was looking for
thanks for telling me to make gradual changes. good tip!
What they mean by 1-5 is that 1 to 5 is a big (4 points) difference and will compress/decompress the metal too suddenly without allowing it to tolerate and get adjusted to the new load settings. This big of a jump can damage the suspension spring as it will strain the spring suddenly. So the adjustments should be made in steps such as 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 and vice versa giving it enough time (a few hours) in each setting to be able to adjust itself.
Just adjusted mine on the cruiser a few days ago. It was on 3. I cranked it down to 1 as I am not all that heavy and the roads I ride are smooth. Made a difference for me. However, should I take on a passenger, I will adjust my tire pressure and suspension according to the manual.
Thanks for another great vid. I always look forward to them.
+lmdetect I was actually thinking of doing the opposite on my Nighthawk because sometimes I find it too soft that I'm afraid the rear tire might skid during emergency braking. Thanks for watching.
looking forward to the next video! thank you for your effort :)
+Stefan Sago You're welcome!
Thnx brother. This vid was a big help
Thanks man, very helpful.
Thanks Brown great video!
Had no idea what that tool did...thanks!
Thank you very much for your excellent video
Very helpful video. Thanks
Hi, by softer suspension setting, do you raise your lower the suspension?
hi brady my cbr is jumping too much will this help me if i tight it...
Hey, that's pretty good.
Please make a video on how to adjust rear monoshock suspension of pulsar 200ns
@BrownBrady Do you know what is the difference in the seat height between the 1 and 5 setting?
wow thanks a ton bro
it really helped me , thanks once again. keep coming with more videos .
+Aniket Karvir You bet. Thanks for the suggestion and for subscribing.
how to adjust nitrogen gas filled reservoir rear suspension on zxr 400?also the front ones.kindly upload video.thanks..i just cant get that H and S also learning about damping and all that is kinda hard. I want to increase Ride height from back and front both cz my 400 looks like 250 in size.
It says in the manual:
"Always adjust the shock absorber position in sequence (1-2-3-4-5 or 5-4-3-2-1). Attempting to adjust directly from 1 to 5 or 5 to 1 may damage the shock absorber."
What they are saying is don't wrap around because it's shorter, only go to the next highest or lowest number. If your shock is at 5 going to 1 or vice versa won't do any harm as long as you do it the right way.
+Raymond Dowe Ah that's what they meant. Good point and thanks for pointing that out.
i think it just means you shouldn't wrap it around the circle, but rather go other way incrementaly.
Raymond Dowe why they cant just write do adjustement one level at a time however if u skip levels in between may affect shock absorber similarly if it means what i understand from ur comment
So if I’m on the left side of the of the bike & I want to bump it up one. Do I turn it towards me? Or towards the other side ( exhaust on right I’m on the left) to go up one I turn it away from me?/ to the muffler side, not towards me,right?
Thanx.
@@SGK23TV Looking from above the bike, turning clockwise will add preload.
I have same bike but my suspension are make wired sound from last to day can you give same reply for those problem

I have issues with sag, but don't think it's the same kind...
I'm getting weird sound like cct. At rpm 5to6k rpm in 1st and 2nd. Just wanna know is that common in cbr 250r?
Hi there, where can i buy wrench exactly as that one.i need for hornet 900

This was so helpfull!
Thanx homie. I think my ninja is a bit tight stock, but we’ll see. Peace & blessings
Your english is so good, wow.. 😲👍
Need more vlogs man!
does adjusting it affect the seat height
I had the same question earlier. How to soften the riding position on my Honda CB Unicorn 160(released in India). They did not supply that Wrench/spanner with the bike though. i got it from other user and lowered the spring. i mean changed to setting 1. I feel my bike is soft now (minor difference). My bike has only 3 settings. 1Soft, 2 standard, 3 Hard. i never put extra load on my bike. 98% times its a single ride only. so, its work for me.
+Nazeer Hussain Same here. I have never had a heavy load on my CBR or a passenger so I keep at position 2.
can i raise my back seat hight by doing this?
will this also lower the rear
cheers wondered what that tool was for
does this also lower it? or not?
does the seat height go lower or higher?
love your bike mate 250cc
+Brendan O'Carroll Thanks.
Thank you for this video......
A good amount of sag for street is around 35mm. Find two points to measure from that will increase as all weight is taken off the swing arm, have someone lift the rear to take all the weight off the swing arm, measure your two points, lower the bike, sit on it and bounce to settle the shock, measure your same two points. Tighten the shock if you drop too much, loosen it if you drop too little.
+Timothy Krainik Excellent contribution. Thank you!
Thanks! Also, make sure that you adjust the travel along with your rear tire pressure should you decide to take a passenger or do some light touring with luggage on the bike.
With the addition of front spring preload adjusters, you can repeat the same procedure on the forks. I'd really suggest looking into them, as at least to me, the CBR250R is pretty squishy in the front end.
Nice job.
Very good video, no b.....t just straight to the point, thx.
liked and subscribed. thank you
+Navishkar Sadheo You're welcome and thanks for subscribing.
Nice! Thanks.
Will doing this lower my bike a bit I'm the back end ,,I feel that the height at the back is pushing me forward on my bike
im subscribid in your channel
this video is amazing bro even years later i have a cbr250r and you just helped me save my new fender eliminator
I'm glad it helped! Ride safe.
By Doing this Can we reduce its Seat height?
This guys great
Thank you.
Where ya been man? I finally have my m2 with a used red cbr250r a.k.a sissie waiting in my garage and you disappear?! We PM me if you want to ride in Toronto! XD
Another reason to adjust the shock is for the weight of the person riding the bike so the suspension works properly and adjust the weight that's being carried
How to suspantion ns 200 upgrate
Your channel really help me i love it. one question for you if you don't mind answer it
do you know the air filter lid that secured by two bolts. Some cbr rider left it open to gain more torque i wonder is it true or false
and will it damage the bike? cause i plan to do it thank you
your channel is the best : )
+ted2ar I'm not that sophisticated a bike mechanic, so I can't really answer that for you. Sorry. :(
ted2ar do as honda manual book said not to open or use Chinese copy product your bike will fuck up. ?
Thanks Smith i didn't do it, i'm too scared to open it anyway
Do you have an manual. ? If not you can download honda 250r 2011 the manual tell you everything.
softer setting translates to higher saddle height or lower saddle height??
Depends on your weight. If you set it real soft, the forks are gonna be longer (or higher rear) at static (no rider) that means the bike, pre-mounting, will be higher up. When you mount it, however, the travel distance pre-mounting to post-mounting will be more. When suspension is hard, basically the suspension is already tightened up like you’re sitting on it, so it’s holding it down more without your weight, but is a lot more sturdy and less springy. FYI your question applies more to forks than rear shocks since generally speaking forks move more and carry more weight under load (braking, turning, etc) :) hope this helps
I bought a CBR 250R 4 months back. But now, I do not feel the the amount of pick up the bike had few months back.I sent the bike for servicing but it didn't help that much. How to increase the bike's pick up?
+Pranay Vaka Wait until all the free services are over.. [first 3 services] after that you will feel the increase in power
Ok. Which is one and which is five? Which way to turn it to harden the ride and which way to soften?
Same question i have
Can you be more specific about direction i.e. cloclwise rotation is softer or harder
harder means tighten it , where as softer is loosen it,
pratik bhosale in the manual said the higher number the harder
1 is soft 2 ok 3 hard 4 harder 5 hardest.
6 hardware 😆just kidding
is this applicable to my CBR 140 v3
sorry! Honda CBR 150 v3
Prise rear shock
+BrownBrady Which setting is softer, higher or lower one?
+Sahil Nanda Lower is softer.
+BrownBrady Thank you
Sorry if you answered this question before, but still, have you ever thought about buying a bigger displacement bike?
+MrZedelijk It has crossed my mind, of course. But I really have no more room for it in my garage. :)
Dude, y u no upload more vids? U have something good going on here.
Cheers.
Sorry, I've been lazy :( I will try to get it going again soon though.
BrownBrady you are alive! 🤗
Your comment has been featured in my December 2017 episode. Thanks for commenting.
BrownBrady Cool. (Where? 😀)
Keep doing good work!
My bad, Oren, for some reason I skipped over your comment but I do remember it was your comment that I replied to last before I started making videos again. So for that, I thank you for the extra push.
The shock absorber doesn’t need time to “gradually expand” when you adjust it.
It does that multiple times a second moving down the road…
this is only adjusting the preload, it will not affect the soft/hard feel, that's the compression and rebound damping.
Good vid again, the annotation link share didn't seem to work.
Most manuals have a recommended setting for single and with passenger settings for a person of average weight (though no idea what they consider average). My bike has a page that has a table for all different recommended settings in the manual.
A bit about performance and suspension settings. Many people think stiffer is better for performance. While this is true on a smooth racetrack, cranking it up for a firm/sporty ride can make for worse or less reliable performance. Too stiff, and your tire just bounces the whole vehicle off the ground instead of dampening the bumps. Result, if you got a bit of roughness in the road, you will get that "skittery" feeling.
For some reason, people combine this with high tire pressure for even more "handling" Which is a potential for another video. Tires!
In the case of tires, most manufacturers have a pressure range they recommend. Thing is, the tires are the suspension for all your "unsprung" weight. So if you have a high pressure, then the unsprung components are more likely to bounce as well.
All combined, This is why on our beautiful sask highways, typically have more control and performance with my nighthawk than some sport bikes have when on our rough and bumpy pavements. Dampen the bump, not jump the bump!
+MarkusReese The annotation won't allow me to link to an external website that I don't own. So I put it in the description instead. Great contribution about the consequences of extreme suspension firmness. It's all about balance. :)
Does it lower the seat height on cbr250r?
I don't have my CBR anymore but I think it can affect the seat height.
@@Brownbrady I bought my CBR almost 7 years ago and used to watch your videos and learned so much about my bike . I still have the CBR although I have bought a couple more bikes since then, just don’t feel like selling it off…. Every time I think of selling it of and go for a last ride… I come back and vow never to sell it 😂❤
Totally relatable. The CBR250R is practical, affordable to own, and a wonderful bike that my heart broke a bit when I let it go. I still think about owning one again in the future.
will it reduce the height of the bike?
Same question I have in mind.
It will adjust the preload of the spring-Everybody's different so you adjust to set your spring sag to suit you.
same question
Yes it definitively will...
We're did you get the rear bike stand
+Phazer 88 You can get it from Amazon: amzn.to/2259sRm and I have added the product link in the description.
THANKS when will you make a new vid
+Phazer 88 I'll try it to make one this weekend. :)
tanks you my friend
1:40 I didn't know you guys didn't know this! Spanner is also a funny insult. to us brits, everything is an insult if you use the word "absolute".... "you absolute spanner"... "you absolute melon"... haha
Removing the right foot peg assembly let’s you access the spring if you have problems getting enough room for the wrench. The assembly comes off easily by removing the 2 large hex bolts.
Hey, where'd you go man? :0)
ikr :(
+lmdetect Been busy over the winter doing house renos, went back to school, and got a real job haha. I'll make another video soon.
Bohemian
I feel like my bike is too high in the back. I slide forward on the seat always having to adjust positioning back again.
Unfortunately this method of adjustment will not help you, the easiest adjustment for you to make to correct your seating angle is to raise your triple tree height on the forks. Simply support the weight of your bike from a centerpoint, loosen the clamps, and pull your bike further up the forks. Keep in mind that this will drastically alter the geometries of your bike, increasing your rake and thereby reducing your turn in ability, but may in fact increase your stability mid-corner. When making adjustments of this sort it is very important to make only small changes, and to take a period of time to get used to the effects.
I think you need to replace your tank pads, i got the same problem now that my pads are worn threw
In the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa we don’t have wrenches! 😂😂😂
so, a spanner is a wrench, a bumper is a fender, and a fanny is an arse/ass - I think I'm getting the hang of this.
Point from up to down steps means height increasing
Point from down to up step means height decreasing
Am I Crt bro
ADJUSTING THE SHOCK BACKWARDS FROM THE 1 NOTCH DIRECTLY INTO THE 5 NOTCH….
They don’t want you to do that…
