Whenever Canada would play Russia at hockey in what was the USSR at the time they always brought they own food and guarded it (and they beer lol) like a precious resource. I'm sure the Soviets did they same when they came to Canada as well. It only takes one rogue cook at a hotel to bring down an entire team, let alone what the Soviets were known for at the time.
Any big match or sporting event where you're travelling somewhere else you have to take care of your own food because this type of thing is really common. Sometimes it's honestly as basic as people who live somewhere having digestive systems that are used to things uniquely local that will cause huge issues to people who have never experienced them.
food poison is not a new when you are playing in another country. That is why most teams that can afford it have their own cooks that bring food with them.

To answer the important question: it was the CONCACAF Champions League last year (and for 15ish years before that). This year, they changed to Champions Cup, which was the name used in the early 2000s. I don't think they ever announced an official reason, maybe nostalgia?
At the same time, they also killed the CONCACAF League, which was more or less a version of the Europa League. That one was probably because the travel and costs involved were too high for many of the teams in it, as MLS and Liga MX only compete in the Champions Whatever.
Actually good changes though. They made regionalized continental cups which could have been cool for a 3rd tier Asian competition but the challenge league cool too

Crew fan here: i loved seeing their run in the cup. And To go out like that 3-0… it was honestly to be expected… I mean we were playing a decent Mexico side team. And to play at an elevation that our players aren’t familiar with is hard… and our team have pretty damn good endurance. But to play at that elevation and a stomach bug exactly fun.. but it was one hell of a run.!🖤💛

The water here had a different set of bacteria that the locals were already immune to but I wasn't. It could have been as simple as that for these players if they decided to use tap water to prepare their meals without boiling it or by just drinking it.

Americans have a fixation on altitude sickness and I don't understand why. I've worked in ski resorts all around the world and the only people that ever came up to me and acted like they were dying from altitude were all American and wealthy. Regular Americans, no problems, rich ones = weak lungs apparently.
That is not to say that there are not adverse effects from being at high altitudes, of course there are. I guess in most of the world we sorta just consider that normal, and 'altitude sickness' is when you actually... get sick from it. Whereas in the US any adverse affects from altitude are 'altitude sickness'?
Same as peanut allergy and its aversion during childhood but maybe it's similar for europeans too. Never have I personally known someone with peanut allergy here.
