In Rhode Island's second-largest city, Cranston, sits a set of old 19th-century ruins, hidden in the woods just beyond Route 295. These ruins, which do not appear to have an official name, are known as the "Cranston Foundry Ruins", towering above the rushing waters of the Furnace Hill Brook below. Unfortunately, not much is known about these historic remnants; the only definitive information I could find was that this was once a foundry (a workshop that manufactures metal castings) and it was founded in 1812. Based on this information, my guess is that this foundry produced some form of iron or metal products. Otherwise, the Cranston Foundry Ruins are an obscure piece of Rhode Island's early 19th-century history, and stand as the centerpiece for a public recreational forest.
The ruins themselves, while small, are quite fascinating. Made entirely out of loose stone held together by some sort of cement or mortar, the ruins have apparently crumbled and decayed over the decades, with only the front façade of the structure truly left intact. However, there are still some cobblestone walls built-in to a small earthy hill close by, alluding to a structure that was once built-in to the hill. The most standout perspective of this mysterious foundry, however, is its view amidst the Furnace Hill Brook. My assumption is that the roaring waters of this brook once served as a source of energy to power the foundry or other nearby buildings, but again, I could not confirm this. Still, while not much is known about this place, the Cranston Foundry Ruins were an intriguing site to explore, and I implore more New England history lovers to check it out!
