At the very top of Anniversary Hill Park in the former industrial city of Holyoke, Massachusetts sits the crumbling ruins of an observation tower, overlooking the city. Known as Scott Tower (officially the Walter Scott Memorial Tower), this decaying structure was once a glorious beacon of Holyoke's prosperity, built in 1940 to commemorate the city's 50th anniversary, alongside the donation of the land for the aptly-named Anniversary Hill Park. The tower was named for Colonel Walter Scott, the original owner of the land, as well as its donor. For decades, the tower would serve as a popular city landmark, up until the construction of Interstate 91, which cut through the tower’s primary access point. Shortly thereafter, visitation declined and the tower slowly fell into ruin and neglect; by the 1980s, Scott Tower was effectively abandoned by the city. The tower soon became something of a “blank canvas” for local graffiti artists to show off their street art and graffiti, as well as more sinister vandals. While there appear to be hopes of refurbishing and improving the tower as recently as 2023, Scott Tower nonetheless sits in neglect and ruin; an abandoned relic of Holyoke’s heritage.
Scott Tower had been on my list of abandoned places to explore for many years now, so I was hyped to finally check it out in person! The structure stands at 56 feet (17 meters) tall, and it is primarily made out of stone and concrete. Luckily, the tower’s observation deck is still accessible to the public, so I was able to climb up the stairs to the top. The tower boasts gorgeous and expansive views of Holyoke, nearby Mount Tom, and the Berkshires. However, the stairs are in pretty rough condition, with many of the steps broken or completely gone-proceed with caution! Overall, Scott Tower is a relatively low-key, yet worthwhile, abandoned ruin for any urban explorer to check out. It is easily accessible and open to the public, wish a short walk up from Anniversary Hill Park’s parking lot. I loved checking this place out! Excellent presentation! My Dad was born and raised in Holyoke and often mentioned the Scott Tower. Thank you for researching the tower and sharing.
Thank you so much, I’m glad you liked it!
THAT INTRO WAS ICONIC
Hahaha thank you!
Finally got around to watching this!! Bro this video was OUTSTANDING 🤩 Good work brother!!
Thanks so much bro, I appreciate the love! We gotta link up again soon bro! 🔥
Pretty damn cool video - I never knew about this place. It's a shame that the town of Holyoke let it get to such a state of disrepair. I loved the drone footage at the end, well done!! Cheers!
Much appreciated man! Agreed, it is such a shame that this place was left to decay… I’m hoping the city moves forward with any redevelopment plans!
Love the theme of your channel my guy. Used to do some urban exploring myself back before they called it that. If you haven't, check out the "Holy Land" in CT. Was still basically all there 20 years ago, just old. Was not "ok" to be there then. Town of Glastonbury in VT was our old pink unicorn, never found much other than the corner of an old cellar hole, rail road tracks, a horse shoe, and some guys property with a hunting camp-10 years later searching hunting grounds with my father we found out we had missed the old encampment for workers by about 5 years but the town itself had been gone forever. You prob have plenty of things to explore yourself, but I have a few more(more popular albeit) if you ever need ideas, and it would be cool to see a video of the holy land now. Rock this channel on my dude!
Thanks so much man, I appreciate this! Also, you’re in luck… I actually have a video on Holy Land USA on my channel already! I filmed a video there last summer, but I’ve been many times before that. Such a cool place!
@@j-mass no way! I’ll have to check that out! TY. Keep filming what you film man. Props from Agawam.
I was there today with my dad
Omg amazing video man. Super entertaining
Thanks so much man, I appreciate it!
You should explore the Springfield Walmart after midnight!
Probably the scariest place I could ever possibly explore! 😂
Oh hey j-mass 👋 great vid as usual
Thanks so much man, I appreciate that!
Love the skit J-Mass
Thanks, it was fun to film!
Good vid man. I live in holyoke. And walk to the tower often. I have heard that there is a preservation/ restoration in talks for it.
Must be cuz they cleared out all the land and it looks like they’re fixing it up a little
When this tower was built in 1940, Holyoke had more people than it does today
Yeah, it’s wild. 53,750 in 1940, and 38,247 in 2020… textbook definition of deindustrialization and suburban flight right there.
Methinks we need a JMass urbanX video game!. Blonde princesses and keg bowling gorillas... wait Nintendo did that lol.
LOL 😂
@@j-mass jmass coins and mushrooms!

Hey, do you know any large abandoned mills or factories around the northwestern mass area?
J-MASS did a video on the Ramage Paper mill in Monroe.
Yeah, the only one I’ve personally been to is Ramage. I know North Adams used to have a big one, but I think that was recently refurbished and renovated just a few years ago…
@@EDVERSiTY so did I, on my main account
@@j-mass is the one that was refurbished the blackinton woolen mill? I was planning on heading there
Yeah, that’s the one! As far as I’m aware, it isn’t abandoned anymore, but may still be worth a visit.
There’s a drive in movie theater in Leicester and unfortunately I found out it was abandoned so can you explore that one?
Yeah that place has been on my list for about a year now, I wanna check it out soon!
@@j-mass I just found out it was abandoned and I’m upset
@@j-mass but I can’t wait to see it in a video
@@j-mass how did you find out it was abandoned
