  • Former Maple Leafs icons Lanny McDonald and Darryl Sittler share memories of the late Börje Salming. McDonald remembers him as 'a guy that meant so much to so many people' and Sittler says he 'was good as it gets' as a player.

A little known fact on Borje Salming. In 1987, when no one else would, before the IIHF would even sanction women’s hockey, he gotr to know that the team had no funds to go ,he decided to fund Sweden’s women’s team to travel to Canada for the first ever women’s international competition, the World Women’s Hockey Tournament.

@@mckessa17 earlier this year he was a part of a TV show called ”Who do you think you are”. On that show he was tracked all the way back to year 1250 where he was showen 2 Heraldic placks of arms being stored in the House of Knights in Stockholm. He was part of 2 different lines of noblefamilies. He was also given a knights armor to try it out and when walking in with the armour on he, with a smile, said : this gear would be perfect when meeting Philadelphia especially in the corners. I have a picture taken from TV while wearing it.

When I was in Hawaii on our honeymoon, we were seated next to a couple from Sweden at a luau. It was a little awkward since neither of us could speak the other's language. I said Toronto and he said Uppsala. So I said " Borje Salming " and he came out of his chair with a huge smile and gave me a high 5. Twenty years later we are still friends on line

I was a young boy when Borje Salming came to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs my family had season's tickets and so I had the incredible opportunity to watch him in action
Very quickly fans took to this tough yet modest man from Sweden.
The fact that when he played in Toronto in the Canada Cup for Sweden, he got the biggest standing ovation of any player including ALL the Canadian players. And that was only after just 3 season's! His passing is mourned by millions in Toronto all of Canada and world hockey community.

That he had the strength to go out on the ice one last time seems so fitting for a warrior like him. I know his family said he had a fast progressing version of ALS, but still, diagnosed this year, went public with it in August, lost his ability to speak, and eat unaided, in October, and now, already gone. I was diagnosed with ALS in January. I'm only 43. It is a totally devastating disease. A year ago I was at work, at a very physical job, when I started having pains in my hamstring. I thought it was just a work injury. I had to leave work early and went to see a doctor for testing. I went for the results by myself thinking it was just a pulled hamstring and ankle injury, that's when they told me it was ALS and statistically I had 2 years left. I'm now mostly bound to a wheelchair. I'm in pain constantly and worst of all I have to figure out how to tell my 6 year old son that daddy won't be around much longer. I know what Borje and his family went through and I'm so sorry it has to happen to anyone.

Some may disagree, but it's a gentleman's sport...and a Canadian gentleman at that!
You go out on the ice, beat each other up to get that black disc in the other net, but after the game, you line up, shake hands, then you'll go out for a beer with the guy(s) you tried to beat up (or a hot chocolate if you're a kid)!!
It's skill acknowledging skill (of all positions). There's a mutual respect. Sure there's the odd hothead and hotdog, but they don't last. It's the gentlemen that endure, and represent the sport. Think of all the greatest that have played, I'd wager to say most, if not all, are stand-up people! RIP Borje.
