I watched this video when it came out and the cueing around hip position relative to the rear axle was something I’d literally never heard before. Since then I’ve been giving it a shot on the trails and it’s like hitting boost pads in Mario Kart. This video totally changed the way I look at trails. Thank you for that.
Thats so awesome! Glad that it helped :)
it's funny, because the first tutorial I saw was Lee and Alex's from Joy of bikes, and they explain this as a row-counter row motion. however, the end result of the counter row is essentially the same, it moves your hips back when it's time to pump. and the other advice here to not go too far back is addressed with the row motion on the upward side of the berm.
I moved from a small 27.5 inch bike to a medium 29er and noticed immediately I wasn't as fast on the track. i wonder if the linger chainstay on the larger back is just far enough that my hips aren't going back enough. I can still pump and accelerate, just not as easily.
I've seen several tutorials on pumping, but, yours is the only one that gives enough detail to 'get it.' The best by far- thanks!
Wow, thanks! I love pump tracks and pumping trails so much and I just wanted to help you guys learn it. I hope it is easy to apply :)
This is it! What bebovito siad. I started riding this year.. I watch tons of skills tutorials.. like really tons.. all parts of the world.. great youtubers often amazing riders.. they know how to ride and make videos.. but K&A tutorials are godsend! Your have something special to this.. and I mean I understand and catch some details better.. it is explained better.. in order.. I think it is really April, her trust in you.. but also you being really careful with her and the blend of your explanations for her and simultaneously for us.. the only thing that can beat you is real life instructor taking me for a spin.. directly correcting my riding.. with years of experience and tricks that they rather not show on internet. Great great stuff!
100%
Agreed. The slow motion, stopped frame explanations really offered something better than the generic "just pump with your legs" - explanation that similar videos usually offer.
Yeah, thanks for this-I hit the local pump track with a another video for guidance but didn’t get beyond simply maintaining speed… your additional detail and explanations about the weight transfer are clearly what I was missing. Looking forward to trying it out on the track!
I think I see a lot of comments saying how great of a teacher Kyle is(which he is), but what about the fact that April is such a great student!!
I totally agree! She is the best student ever :)
@@AprilRideMTB she is a great student because she trusts you and she is not afraid to fail.
Amount of subdivisions in the video really demonstrate how much this guy actually ares about the quality of his videos and the viewer’s experience watching. Appreciate it.
Thanks Owen! Yeah we are trying to really help people out and not just make stuff for views. I am really glad you can tell :) Thanks for watching!
Hope you guys enjoy this one! Pumping is seriously my favorite riding skill and teaching April how to do it on the trail had me so stoked! I actually learned by building a really tiny pumptrack in my yard as a teenager, has anyone else ever built a track or do you have any plans to?
Kyle & April - Ride Mtb nope I live in the UK where it’s boring
pumping but on flat ground
I live in LA where open space doesn't really exist, plenty of curb cuts tho!
Curb cuts are actually such a great training tool!
My husband & I are actually in the process of planning to build 1 now 🙋🏼♀️ I can’t wait to get it done & start practicing
I'm in my mid 40's and having a blast mountain biking, your tutorials are making things safer for me as I'm trying everything out trying to use technique vs just holding on for dear life.
Thats so cool to hear! Thats our goal for sure, just help people feel safer, ride more, and have a positive outlet :)
yeah I'm in the same age group and learning from scratch too lol, we don't bounce back up like we used to lol
Me too mate, in my 40's but learning a lot from these videos. April is picking up these skills so fast, it's fun to watch,
Yep. Same here too. Have the videos ready in my library whenever I go to work on a technique.
Just dinged 51 and these videos are super helpful in teaching good technique while 12 to 25 year old me remembers BMX and mountainbiking.
My 8 year old daughter (Akaylia) LOVES you guys! She is just starting mountain biking and said, quote, "I want to be as good as April one day and then become the best mountain biker in the world". Thanks for your vids, you're an inspiration for Akaylia. :)
Wow that is so awesome, thank you for sharing!!! I am glad that I can be someone that she can look up to and learn from :)
My 7 year old daughter also loves you guys! She went from training wheels last summer to a geared mtn bike this year, and is already practicing manuals (and other stunts that make me proud but also terrified). April: Thank you for being such an inspiration to girl riders!!
Told a guy at work about your channel and he said he just found it himself. Right on... he agreed, you have such a great dynamic between the two of you. It really helps people see and understand better than listening to ProBro’s talk. Thanks!! 👊🏽
Thats so rad! Thank you for the nice words too! we are just trying to have fun and keep things value focused rather than another look at me channel. Thanks for being a part of it :)
Cracks me up that people can give these free videos a "thumbs-down". Kyle & April break this stuff down in a way that's easy to understand and apply when you go out. Great stuff.
I wish I had known you 70 years ago. I'm too old and brittle now! But I really got some good pointers on how to CORNER from you, so I'm still grateful for that!
Thanks Jim :)
Did Kyle study Pedagogy or something close ?
April is a gifted student for sure. But Man, this guy can definitively explain things and pass knowledge to someone like no one else #LovefromFrance #PassItOn
Haha thank you! No I actually even got kicked out of highschool for being a bad student because I was so bored in class. I really wanted to be a professional rider and studied the best guys so much along the way. Its funny because I am not naturally gifted as an athlete and needed to make sure I was doing everything perfect to have a chance at the races. So glad that people are finding these videos helpful though :)
@@AprilRideMTB Here in France, some say that there are no bad students just bad teachers.
I think you are very smart.
At least you made the best of this bad teacher teaching boring stuffs by making dope useful videos
Great vid as always...but I am blown away at the comment section. Most positive CZcams comments section ever - a reflection of y'all's outlook and content. Thanks for such outstanding work!
Thanks Kyle! Yeah we seriously can't believe how supportive people have been and I think its really just because we are trying to focus on providing value first and not trying to be fake or spammy. We just want this to be a fun place where people can learn in a positive environment and take a break from everything else. Thank you for the nice comment too! We will keep them coming :)
A good cup of coffee and a new Kyle & April video. What a perfect way to start of a Saturday morning and first day of vacation.
Time to hit the Stockholm trails.
Thats so cool! Glad you are enjoying the videos! Have fun on the trails!!
Best pumping tutorial ever…and I’ve seen a TON of them. Thanks Kyle & April!!
Great to hear!
Dang April u r such a quick learner...and Kyle u are such an awesome teacher.
Thanks Mel! We have been having a ton of fun doing these :)
These lesson videos are just fantastic! So insightful and clear. All the comments about you being a great coach are spot on, Kyle. What makes it even better is that you're a great demonstrator, April. I realise you both put a lot of time into your parts but in the edit the difference in April's body position is so clear to see and make it easy for the viewer to understand what Kyle has said. That's a real plus and it's not easy to do because people always think their movements are more dynamic than they actually are. It kinda involves exaggerating movements but not so much that it looks forced. Such a strong pairing for teaching. Plus you seem like really cool people. Well, fanboying over!! Thanks for the content, I'm already riding better as a result :)
Thank you so much for such a nice comment! We are so glad to be helping and even though its a lot of work hearing that it helps you guys makes it all worth it :) Thanks for supporting us and watching!!
I agree. This is the next best thing to doing a group class, where you get to see coaching of what others are doing right, wrong, correcting and applying in real time. Sometimes I think I learn as much from watching others learn as I do by practicing it myself.
Down at the pump track with my 13yo son. Watched the first 4 minutes (!) and it just clicked!! Awesome guys, thanks :-)
You’re a great teacher Kyle!
Glad you think so! Thank you so much!!
You guys are becoming my favorite mtb channel! Love the content, your style of coaching, and April's feedback!
Wow, thanks Marty! We are trying are best to make these things happen and its been so cool to see the response! Thanks for the support!
Best channel out there imo!
I need a trainer like him in person. Best trainer and its so easy to understand👌
Haha thank you Sharda :)
I have been working on pumping this year. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not. Now I know why. Body positioning. So well explained. Thank you. Nice work both of you. ...and watching Kyle pump through the track was crazy. I’ve got a long way to go. Challenge accepted.
Thats awesome John! Hope it helps next time you head out :) I am such a visual learner and once someone explained the how to me it all clicked so hopefully I can do the same for you :)
Great video! When I got a DJ and started going to my local pump track my mountain biking skills had a had a huge increase. Pumping is honestly the best skill for getting faster!
Totally agree! Pumping is a skill that unlocks so many things on the trail :) Thanks for watching!
I've been following your training videos and have really seen improvement in my riding. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Love your vids.
Love that! Thats so awesome Bob! Thanks for watching :)
April’s new bike debut! Great work! Kyle is a great instructor.
Thanks so much Dan!!!
These tutorials are the best! Kyle being a great coach who explains very well, seeing April improve through each video and the long run because of it, and also the input from her learning the skill on "what clicks" is a huge help! Awesome channel!
Glad you like them! Thank you so much for the nice words Brennan! Its a lot of work but seeing the response has been so cool and makes it all worth it for sure :)
ABSOLUTE BEST EXPLANATION OF PUMPING I'VE SEEN!
Every video you release I UNDERSTAND more about how to use my body on the bike!!
AMAZING! I've invested at LEAST 100 hours into video tutorials and learning to ride over the last 2.5 months and THERE IS NOT BETTER or there!
Thank you both so much!
GREAT job in helping us understand!
Seriously... Thank you!
8:45 - "Yeah it's going to be a little bit different..." - Kyle
but kinda the same. - Seth
Hahahha nice one
Drama!!!
thanks lots to be said about taking a student who has the skills to learn
over a rider who can do, but talks over the viewer's understanding
Thanks :)
Now I can finally understand why I gain little speed with great effort. Too much pressure into the ground, instead of forward. The hip movement example made all this clear to me, thank you!
WHERE ARE THE JERSEYS AND GLOVES?
I WANT TO PROMOTE YOU GUYS EVERYWHERE!
Seriously - AWESOME explanations!
Thank you!!!! Announcement next week for our merchandise! We just got the trademark stuff in yesterday! Thanks for the nice comments and always being so supportive :)

My mate keeps pulling away from me on the rollers without pedaling, now I know why. Thanks, awesome again
Hopefully you can surprise him now! haha
She just balled out on that jump randomly🤙🏼🚵🏻♀️
Haha she was so stoked and just decided to send it! Thanks for watching camron!
Man, I watched this video and PBed every sector on my fav downhill run. This channel is the best. So much fun!!
Glad you enjoy it! That is so rad! Nice work!!
I caught myself pumping my legs in my sofa while watching April going through the BMX park section. Wanted her to get it so bad! I had my head moving forward too when she was going up the slopes. Hahaha. Love the videos! Please keep it up. Going riding tomorrow AM!! Cant wait to find a ''pumpable'' section. :-)
Haha just like a video game!
My kids were pretty excited to watch this video as we have been trying to learn to ride our local pump track. During the common mistakes section my kids self identified what they're doing wrong. We can't wait to get out and practice. Thank You!!
That is awesome! That makes me so stoked! Thanks for sharing!!
You broke this down so well. I'm able to hold my speed over rollers but have never been able to accelerate, I'm confident that that's about to change.
And just like that I learned why I suck at pumping trails. I’m gonna git me some super shred now whooo! Thank you Kyle & April 🤟
Hope it helps Jose!
Kyle & April - Ride MTB seriously it has, tried your cornering techniques on my favourite trails and was shocked at the extra speed I picked up. Ended up hitting a few features faster than usual and even made some jump transitions I’ve never managed to hit. I’m so glad I found your channel and I hope it continues to be a raging success.
The best mtb teaching on CZcams
We appreciate that!
Kyle & April - Ride Mtb you too must be sick of hearing it from everyone. However, I also wrote this so other people visiting know to go check out more of your videos. It’s a crime not to.
Really love how you break down into the details of the body positions in every tutorial, which helps so much more compared with all the other video tutorials out there. Keep up the good work!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching and being supportive of us :)
The way April is progressing, she'll be a pro rider before long.
Haha that would be awesome! She is such a quick learner!
That smile on April's face says it all! It clicked, and she got it!
:)
Wow you guys! This is the best pumping tutorial video I have seen on CZcams and I have watched a lot. There was so much good stuff in the video I'm going to have to watch at least five more times before I even take it to the trail and then watch a few more times after that. I love pumping on the trail and I'm not bad at pumping but now I know I'm not good at pumping ☺️. I can't wait for the follow-up video on pumping turns!
Wow, thank you! It was a lot of fun to make this one because pumping is my favorite thing and kind of a specialty haha. Its so fun and helpful to learn how to carry speed through rough sections and over bumps on the trail! Hope this one helps you out! Thanks for watching!
The video was even better the second time through. I noticed Kyle's heel and toe position. Heels down when pumping the downs and toes down while going up.
I used your tips today on a flatish/semi technical/ swervy section and I hand no necessity for pedaling to maintain adequate speed. On my second round, I actually had to brake as I took more speed then I could handle due to the pumping.
Thanks for the awesome tips and vids!!
That's awesome! We love to hear about immediate improvement!!!
Holy damn, this is the best pump track how-to I’ve seen so far. Love the trail applications. I have a “pump” section on my favorite trail that leads to a nice gap jump. I’ve always taken the B line because I could never get enough speed on the pumps to clear the gap. Can’t wait to try this out next time. Keep up the awesome videos you two 🤙
Thanks for the nice comment J.L! This one was really fun to make and I hope it helps you guys out on the trail :)
Just bought my first mtb and your videos are so awesome for learning and understanding technique!
Great to hear!
Kyle is a natural teacher. Excellent descriptions, corrections, examples, and graphics. Best MTB training on CZcams.
Appreciate that! Thank you so much for the nice comment :)
I love the way you guys break it down so well. Makes it so easy to understand!
Dude, April RIPS. Sick tutorial you two. Thanks!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching Joe!!
These are the best coaching videos I've found. You explain things really well :)
Thanks Matt! Glad you are enjoying them :)
Another video with great tips..thank you both!
All of your tutorials are definitely the best for beginners, it really helps seeing someone else in the same shoes and watching them progress.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching Ryan!!!
All of your videos on repeat! Thanks!
I lagged on watching this video because I thought I knew how to pump. Then of course Kyle blew my mind by having so much more to add to my understanding. You guys nailed it again and I can't wait to practice this!
Thats awesome! Thanks for watching and I am glad you enjoyed it!!
These tutorials are so legit. I’ve seen people use these techniques in person and thought “How the heck do they do THAT”. Super understandable break downs. Thank you!
Happy to help! Thanks so much for watching!!
It‘s a pleasure to see, how focused and concentrated April learns all these lessons. She‘s a talent, my wife never learns so efficient 😬.

OMG! This video is the clearest and easiest to understand I’ve ever watched. And you kind of pointing out what problems I have and confused. April is really a quick learner! That’s really awesome!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for watching Kelsey :)
You must be psychic. Just got back from doing a pump track for the first time with my kids. This video showed up right when we got back. Thanks for the videos! They are always really well explained.
That is awesome! Thanks for the comment Walter, hopefully you guys can watch and then apply it sometime soon! Let us know how it goes!
Honestly thought this would be worthless...but this was incredibly insightful 🤯
Happy to surprise you! Thanks so much for giving it a chance and watching!
Pumping is probably one of my favorite things to do on the trail. Definitely adds to the fun. Keep killin it you two.
Thanks Shaun!
Kyle & April, great to see your continued growth and support from the biking community in what your are doing. Have commented in the past and reiterate that the way you are breaking down the skills, showing and comparing body positions, drawing lines, explaining cause/effect, highlighting common mistakes, and watching the progression has been great for myself and to pass on to my son. Watching the 'how to pump' tutorial revealed more key tips, particularly those hips just past the rear axle (more than just legs pumping down!). Look forward to some jump tutorials, and also help with progression handling transition from blue to black (steepness) jumps in the future. Best wishes, Stuart
BRO YOUR VIDEOS ARE SO GOOD. I just bought my first mountain bike (A Giant Talon 1) and I'm hooked on the sport. Sadly I let out too much air and my bike pump broke so I'm stuck not riding this week but your videos are helping so much.

Went out today and found my two rollers about 5 miles down the trail. Used your advice, my 4th set was great! Thanks for your educational videos. 🚵🏻♂️🚵🏽🚵🏻♀️
Nice work! That is so awesome!!!! Congrats!!
Kyle & April - Ride Mtb it’s only because of you guys! There’s another trail, tougher, when weather cools down I’ll do those rollers also. It’s almost all downhill with S turns, rollers, hairpins. Too hot here right now.
Your videos are god like man. Your clear and very detailed, your teaching opposed to showing people this cool thing you can do and your super encouraging to your gf. The subtitled and audio is also great. Thank you. Apparently I've been pumping wrong all along, I'm BMX now MTB but same concept. I would push down my front end more than rear axle. Also your jumping has videos has helped me try and get more comfortable. I don't have it down yet but, I'm trying. Having difficulty driving my body up. I watch your videos every time before I try though.
Glad to hear our videos are helpful for you!
April seems so sweet! You are lucky to have met her.
Yeah she really is, I feel super lucky to have met her.

Hearing April squeal when she really starts making the rollers work 😄 ...it’s actually crazy how quickly you can flip the switch, April! Kyle I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who can so clearly demonstrate how well these techniques work. Brilliant work as always you two!
