I was impressed with how you were able to demonstrate how to jump incorrectly for comparison without breaking your neck
😂
Lol
It takes a surprising amount of skill to be able to consistently demonstrate how to do something incorrectly.

Thanks Joe! Hope it helps you :)

I'm an older rider (67) who grew up racing XC and still rides a 2008 26" XC racer with all that implies for geometry. I never really learned to jump (drops, yes, jumps, no). Been trying to use the compress the forks and drive upward method for a while and never got beyond the sense of impending doom. Watched your video, went out and used the pop method and with one time sessioning with my son I'm jumping that old 26er feeling totally comfortable. KUDOS TO YOU, Kyle!
That’s so awesome to hear Richard, thanks for sharing!
@@AprilRideMTB thank you for this usefuln and engaging video i like it very much
That is awesome! I'm not far behind you in age. I started on motocross. I ride clippless and use my legs to lift the rear. I think it is holding me back on progressing.
@@TCJACJ2000 point those toes!
"your bike is a fraction of the weight of your body". Well said. Also the tyre pressure tip. You are on point. Great video
Thank you so much! It was a lotta work on this one haha!
@@AprilRideMTB This is the best of your videos I've watched. The structure & production of this video is much higher quality. I'm not suggesting your other videos aren't good. They are. This one is just so much better in my opinion. Good job!

@@iowabass306 honestly same I literally bought a new hard tail and it weighs 45 pounds but it’s all I could afford. Unless someone buys a mountain bike the price of a car it’s just about impossible to get a good, light one.

Hope you guys enjoy! This one took a lot of work but was really fun to make. Let us know if you have any questions at all :)
I want to build a hardcore hard tail. I was planning on using a San Quentin frame because I heard it was amazing and a Nx drivetrain. I’m not sure what fork to use. I was thinking a fox 36 or a pike. I have a XC bike so I want a bike I can take to bike parks, I will also be doing normal trail riding on it. Let me know any parts you recommend and a good fork, I will be doing a lot of jumps and want to keep it under 2k. Thanks James.
You guys are amazing!!! You always explain things so clearly.
Kyle , April. Nice work!
hey, great video as usual
could you cover all unusual and different jump types as you only covered the main 3 and im interested in what the other jumps even are, like shark fins or anything
All the work was worth it. I've learnt an awful lot. Got a lot more out this video than all the others I've watched. Thanks so much!
"Instead of going fast and hoping for the best..." LOL, that's totally me. Thanks for this!

Great to hear, thanks for sharing!
Finally, a straightforward explanation!
Hopefully it helps some people out! Thanks for watching :)
Thank goodness!
I can see why you were saying that this video was a lot of work. All of the different clips, diagrams, transitions, floating fonts, and moving arrows. You did an excellent job! It is also one of the most comprehensive, and well explained tutorials on Jumping that I have found.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much!
@@AprilRideMTB just for me, I somehow lift my rear wheel too soon even though my pop timing is pretty much perfect. How can I improve this? (on mild kicker)
PS: I know, I could just write a normal comment but didn't know how to @ on a normal one.
Thx in advance
As MTB newbie in 50s, your instructions are the only ones I felt comfortable trying. Because you cover every possible scenarios, and makes me feel like I really understand the mechanics in detail. I've watched plenty other videos before I found your channel, their instructions are vague and just give you the basics. I felt like it's a trial and error instruction, and I can't afford many errors in my 50s like in my 20s haha.
I feel exactly the same way for the same reasons. Thank you so much Kyle & April.
In one of your previous videos you explained how to do a wheelie, I'm 40 years old and since my first bike always dreamed of being able to do one, as soon as you mentioned to look up and not down, I managed to finally do my first ever wheelie, although it was a small one, I'm so grateful for what you do, and I will be forever thankful 😊
That is so great to hear Lee! Keep practicing and we hope you will get it dialed 😊
I was always listening GMBN to learn mountain biking and basics, but never able to do a bunny hop or pop until I see your videos, You explain very well how to avoid crashes during jumps, which is very helpful to beginners. Thank you for doing such a detailed video
Honestly, this has got to be the single most helpful mtb video on youtube. Your clear explanation of what causes that dreaded nose dive on jumps is absolutely excellent. The way you break down the different approaches is tremendous.
Glad you think so!
Watched literally hundreds of jump videos. As a beginner, this video is the only one that gives me a plan I can work with.
Great to hear!
I’ll tell you what, I sure had no idea all of this went into jumping😳. The fact that you guys have taken it apart and laid it all out it’s pretty impressive. 👍🏻
Watching April when she first started and watching her now she is doing an awesome job. She has come a long way and she is a much more confident rider. Great job April!!!
I totally agree, thank you!
Brilliant explanation. I’m loving this series of how to videos. Husband and I are in our 50’s, and since we found this channel, we’ve a new found love of riding - we’ve started searching for drops and jumps, and have been hanging out at the local jump skills park. Keep up the great work.
Glad to hear, that is awesome!
Love this comment..more power to you :)
Another terrific video guys, I can't get enough. You have really helped me understand so much more about MTB riding and I've improved enormously in s short period of time.
I built a manual trainer after watching another of your videos and been practicing in the garage, feeling a lot more confident and riding better and safer thanks to you guys, please keep up the great work, your videos are outstanding.
I’ve seen tons of how to jump videos, but this one is by far the most comprehensive and easiest to understand. Thanks!
My struggle exactly. Was soo focused on the bunny hop that when I translated it to jumps, on some it worked and on some it was too much sending me into dangerous flight. Had to assemble the right technique from bits and pieces here and there, took me years literally. The most expected video from you Kyle, THKS a LOT!!!. Btw, its really nice to see that you listen to your viewers. Certainly we recognise that this video took a lot of energy from you to make, but please don´t dismay in these efforts and keep them videos coming, we your viewers appreciate it inmensely.
Thank you so much for appreciating the hard work and we are so glad that it was helpful for you! This was the most requested video and we were the most unsure on how to do it, so we are glad you liked it!
What exactly did you do bc I have kinda the same problem. I can bunnyhop pretty high etc and tried to translate it to jumps and on some I just got sent into nosedive . So I started watching some tutorials and got so confused bc everyone said something else. One tutorial says bunnyhop the other one says just stay stiff etc.
ugh, so it isn't just me then. It actually _does_ take years. It's just the most frustrating thing to learn. It doesn't help that I live in the most jump averse area in the country. sheesh
You're the best couple on CZcams
Haha thank you :)
Two nicest people I've ever met
You two have made my confidence skyrocket. Thank you for everything.
this is perfect i've been looking for something like this, love how you explained how to handle each jump type rather than just explaining the race or boost style on one jump.
April is killing it! Thanks for these it's a nice refresher course after not riding for 10 years (moved to flat land). Now the kids are riding and asking about jumping and this was perfect.
Thank you, glad it was helpful for you and your kids!
Kyle, You've become one of my favorites! Your explanations are really clean and thorough. You cleared up most of my confusion related to jumping!
Thank you and glad to hear it was helpful!
Kyle is so encouraging and gentle! I can't wait to try these techniques.
This is by far the best description of learning how to jump, that I have ever watched!
You guys are so enjoyable to watch thanks !!!
These tutorials are the best out there. So many details that answered all my questions. Keep up your great work :)
Glad you like them! Thank you so much!
I've watched a lot of videos on jumping and this is the best one I've seen! Really great explanations! Sharing this with my friends before they come here to Arkansas for some sessioning 😎
Thanks Joe!!
You are such a great teacher....I am trying to come back from a very serious motorcycle accident, and you and April have been just the boost I have needed...please keep up the information videos and have a wonderful time doing so.. ....again thank you very much..
Wow!!! I haven't tried to put this into practice yet. Sometimes I feel like I can jump and sometimes I mess it up. This explanation has just nailed it in my head. The difference in needing to use the two different bunny hop methods for the first two types of ramps. No one has explained it like that before. Massive thanks.
Just wanted to say, I love your videos, always appreciated and I always learn and feel more confident. The video on drops improved my riding so much and helped me gain more confidence after a couple of major injuries on the bike (collarbone, rib, torn acl). Thanks!!
That's great to hear Mark, thank you for sharing! 😊
I love this lecture that so comprehensive, scientific, beginner friendly humble education. Thank you so much. This is my first season mtb and I have been anxious and lost how to jump. You are the savor of my anxious problem, at least I understand clearly in my head, I am going to see you lecture unlimited time watch thinking as Bible and master. Congratulations on very good job on this lecture and I appreciate.
Glad it was helpful!
I was watching this as I was out on a kicker trail and let me tell you your explanations were so clear and concise. I was able to get it down on the first try. Awesome!
This is just brilliant. You explain it so well. I can’t wait to get out and try out some of your advice.
Massive thumbs up for Kyle and April.
👍
I just recently got into mountain biking this past summer and watching April’s progression gives me so much confidence! Thank you two for the amazing tutorials they are seriously the best out there🙌🏻
That's awesome to hear Kailey!
I love your videos Kyle and April. Thanks for making mountain biking and trail riding so much more fun!!!!
Thank you, that is our goal!!! 😊
Brilliant explanation, love the calm aura this content has 🙏🏼
Thanks for this! It's easily among the absolute best jumping tutorials I've seen on YT. I'm working through a plateau in my jumping skills and your concept of "the pop" speaks to me.
Best jump tutorial out there! After 9 months of nose dives, mild kicker instructions have given me executable steps and consistency- much less fear and more fun. Thanks!!!
Great to hear!!!
thank you *sooo* much for this. I have tried many vids but none of them work and I usually don't have fun on jumps, but after I watched this I can finally jump. you guys make the best learning content on youtube, hands down. Thank you again for your awesome content!
Thank you so much, glad it was helpful!
really? Congrats. I tried this pop method with some ramps I have. Still feels weird. I keep clipping my rear tire on the end of the lip and getting tipped forward a bit. I'm gonna have to try it at Ray's Indoor Bike park in Ohio the weekend after next. How many tries did it take before you got the timing right?
I actually made my first trip to a downhill mtb park a couple weeks ago and again this past Sunday have to say using lots of things i learned from your videos had me making really good progress during each visit and i cant wait to go again next spring i feel mixing things up between trails and this is helping my overall riding bigtime!
I really like the way Kyle explains things. He keeps it simplistic and doesn't over word things. Plus he shows video examples while he's explaining things. There's another guy on CZcams who I'm not gonna name names but he complicates things because he's using too many unnecessary words and it's just him talking and not showing illustrations while he's explaining things. Keep it simple.
Your tutorials are by far the best ive seen..thats a talent in itself...
Haha thanks Dan!!
I really like your method for explaining how to jump. The description of the forces and mechanics was very helpful for me!
Glad it was helpful!
I've watched a few of these jumping videos this morning. This one is by far the best. Thanks!
Love it how you guys share all these techniques with such a passion 🙏🏼
Yes finally a how to jump vid, I find jumping a full suspension bike a lot easier to jump especially on those bigger tabletops and I was surprised that I was clearing all of them
Thanks! Thats awesome you find the full suspension easier!
Those clips of April looking like a boss jumping and dropping!
Thanks JB! She has improved so much this year, its been really fun to watch :)
OMG Kyle, your teaching technique is getting so much better! I'm so impressed. And April's jumping technique is night and day from the last video I watched. You guys are a force to be reconned with I tell ya! Well done!
I want to explain you that i saw lots of jump videos and your video is, in my opinión, the best. I’m a beginner and now I’m learnig how to jump. The "pop" jump is really incredible because, like you explained in your video, you can almost do all jumps. Thank you so much for your videos. I’m very grateful to you. Now I am enjoying every moment with the MTB. Thank you from Barcelona (Spain).
Really struggling with clearing jumps. I feel like I’m going fast enough but my momentum stops once I hit the jump. This video helped a lot and I will be applying this information on my next practice jump session. Thanks Kyle for explaining so well for the newbies 😎
Hope it will help you when you give it a try!
Hey, I just wanted to say that this video was extremely helpful and I've only liked maybe 50 videos in the past 3 years and now its 51 so thanks for the help. I'm definitely gonna use this to help me.
Well, I didn’t expect a heart but thanks lol.
Thank you so much for the like :)
Kyle & April - Ride MTB no problem, have a good night. 🙂
By far the best video on on this topic I've seen on CZcams. I find the examples of wrong technique combined with an explanation to why they are wrong almost more helpful than explaining the correct way.
This is the most valuable how to video for me personally. Thanks
And, strangelly, I found it more clear what to do, when I consistently done wrong in every tipe of jumping.
I like how when he demonstrates the poor technique he still lands it / is in full control.
Hi Kyle and April👋👋👋.I learned to do bunny hopping from the GMBN channel, but thanks to Kyle I learned how to do it. I'm very satisfied👍🙏. His explanation with the trajectories (⬆️↗️Arrows➡️↗️) helped me. And forgive my English, I'm still learning it)😊
Thank you, that is great to hear :)
Best coach ever. Best team as well. Kudos to you guys! You make a cool couple
This is the best description of jumping I've seen so far. Gonna practice this as soon as I can get to some jumps.
The best overall summary of jumping I've seen. Seems like an interesting combo of what Ryan Leach and Fluid focus on (the pop) vs what GMBN focuses on (the bunny hop).
For most jumps seems like the pop with right speed is the easiest way to go. Do you have any advice on how to make sure your rebound speed is adjusted right too? Or do you think most of the videos advising slower rebound speed are ignoring the bigger problem of having your weight to far back (which was my problem jumping which I'm working to correct).
Is the pop basically a strategically timed English bunny hop, with the focus being on pushing down into suspension to create lift instead of pulling up on that bike?
Hey Benjamin! Thanks! Yeah i think most of the time technique will overcome any issues with rebound speed but we will do a video on suspension setup too :). Most of the time when people get kicked its from being tense and letting the bike really get kicked off the end.
You knock this one out of the park Kyle. I’ve been dirt jumping for 25 years and have always struggled communicating to people how to fly their bike. I’ve told people to “pop” but failed to explain what it means. Nice dissection
Thanks so much Dustin!
lol. I always ask that after someone tells me to pop. I'm always like, "Okay. Sure. But what does 'pop' mean though? How?" It's meaningless without an explanation. Some people say to push as hard as you can into the lip. Others say to pull hard. Some say just bunny hop. One year trying to learn to jump properly, and nothing has clicked. Me and the wife literally spend 8 hour days on weekends just hitting jumps over and over again. Is it really supposed to be this hard to learn? It still feels like pure luck whenever we clear a jump. ugh...so frustrating.
By far my favorite "how-to-site". No latent bragging, just teaching. Thank you so much!
Glad you think so, thank you!!! 😊
Yesss. Finally you guys did a jump vid. Really excited when this popped up and you didn't disappoint. Another one for the library to refer to. I now know i am one of those who lean back trying to create lift, needless to say I am so glad for your help. Oh and can I just say a big thank you for making your videos 'ad free'. It makes a huge difference for concentration. Hope April wasn't hurt too bad after the little crash in this one. So grateful to you guys. Cheers
Haha finally i can learn to jump!!!
Haha Hope It helps!
She is dialed now, couldn’t believe that was her jumping... thank you!!
Thank you! 😊
Loads of slo-mo! So useful. This is the jumping video I've been wanting to see for ages! Thank you Kyle and April.
thanks thanks! im on hardtail with a 60mm leaf spring fork and just want to do jumps in parks . this tutorial has good visual and step by step tips! thanks kyle
Key to learning is finding a mild kicker you’re comfortable hitting over and over. If there’s one thing to keep in mind is: hard legs. You’d be surprised how much you are soaking up the jump.
So true!!!
I'm interpreting this as you want "hard legs"?
"your bike is a fraction of the weight of your body". Well said. Also the tyre pressure tip. You are on point. Great video
This. Whenever I watch my own footage, it always looks like I'm absorbing the lip with my legs. But then if I try to focus on keeping my legs stretched out as I go up and off the lip I feel like I go dead sailor. I've been practicing regularly for a year now, and I still can't get it right. I feel like whenever I clear a jump, it's just pure luck. I'm not used to sucking at something so bad. It sucks. What kind of drills can I do to ingrain the proper technique into my muscle memory?
Okay, I’m ready all I need is a mountain bike now.
Haha hope you can get one soon!
Great tutorial as usual. You covered all the bases. I've been always afraid about my feet leaving the pedal and you addressed that nicely in this tutorial. Your a great coach Kyle!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching wilson!
I was able to get some air on my HT for the first time! Didn’t have to go fast, just tried to remember all the stuff you explained here about the right technique. Awesome video guys! More power to your channel 💪

It was pretty entertaining I can’t lie
As always, excellent tutorial. Of all the videos out there yours are the easiest to follow. And I love the bullet points. Thank you.
Kyle, you have a great ability to break things to the basics and build up from there. Thanks for sharing this video.
I'm no expert with jumping, but I thought people tend to nose dive when they lean back too much and the rear shock pops up the rear wheel and makes the bike start front-flipping (hence the nose dive)?
I need to work on the pop though. I usually think about pumping into the kicker/takeoff and forget to pop... But I do notice if I don't pump into the kicker at all, then I get absolutely no height. I also noticed that it's waaay easier to jump if you set your shocks to the highest compression (or lock them out). I heard faster rebound helps, but I think if it's too high, then it doesn't work well with larger kickers, where you need pump "longer" into the takeoff.
Lastly, I tend to push the front bars out during the jump like a bunny hop (but I don't bunny hop from the takeoff), otherwise I tend to land rear first into an accidental manual. Is this because I'm not popping and only pumping into the takeoff?
Or is that all the wrong way to think about it?
Hey Hobbes, great questions. I think some of the stuff you are experiencing is from some small issues with technique. It sounds like maybe you are staying a little far back on the bike and not doing much of a pop forward. If you have correct technique none of the other stuff with bike setup really matters too much. It can make a huge difference if you aren't using proper technique though.
My husband learned how to bunny hop because of learning how to do jumps. I think jumps are actually easier than bunny hops because of this. Admittedly, jumping is a bit more dangerous than bunny hopping in the driveway.
You guys are ace, thanks for putting this out, really useful! My 8yr old has started hitting jumps and now I don’t have to teach him my sloppy technique from an early age. Keep it up, you absolutely rip without any of the bravado
Is this place in boise? Im driving to boise right now, and i want to check it out. If so, whats it called
Yeah its just called the fort boise bike park!

Once again, Kyle this was an awesome video. The graphics (arrows, notes, etc.) that you attach to show the correct position are invaluable. You're efforts are appreciated. Thanks April for being humble enough to allow the display of your crash.
Thanks Steven, glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Great video! This is the best jump tutorial I've seen. I've never had good enough technique to do much jumping but you've given me a much better idea of how to start practicing properly.
Watched a bunch of videos on this topic and this was easily the best. Thank you and well done.
I have watched loads of other how to jump videos and I keep coming back to this one. So simple and clear with seriously good production. Thx K&A!
Glad you keep coming back 😊
This vid is one of the best ever out there on the interwebs to cover this topic. REALLY dig all the drawn descriptions coupled with real world examples to show off every do and don't. This is one to save to Favs!
One of the best videos out there for learning jumps. I've been learning for a while and sort of figured out the 'pop' method for myself as it felt safest, but hearing from someone who knows what they're talking about *when* it's the right thing to do, and also really importantly why, is so useful. I'm gonna hit those jumps so much more confidently now.
Glad it was helpful!
Have consistently found your videos to be the most helpful. Just adding the little bit of toe movement made an immediate difference in my confidence cuz I felt like my feet were much more solidly on the pedals.
I love your guy's videos! Soo helpful.. detailed and love the slowmos with the arrows and descriptions!
I've read the book on mtn bike skills by Lee McCormack and Brian Lopes and it's amazing, but this video is freaking outstanding!!! Well done and thank you so much for demonstrating the "wrong" way to do the jumps, that was immensely helpful.
Great video on jumps, thank you! Cannot wait to go out and try those out.
Thank you guys! You are both very inspirational please keep on spreading positive motivation.
watching this video since my challenge for my third season of Mtb is to master mild kicker jumps and some gaps. I cannot wait for the Mtb season to start here in Qc, Canada. Thanx for your time and knowledge
Brilliant teaching as always. I‘m happy that the coach I hired this summer taught me the correct „pop“ technique. Now it‘s time to master the flat takeoff jumps that make up most of the jumps on my home trails.
Thats awesome! good luck on flat takeoffs! Thanks Christian
Lots of jumping videos out there. This one is easily in the top 5 best category. Well done!
Hey Kyle & April. Thanks for putting this together. I have been applying your video to my local dirt track over the last week. Your explanations have allowed for me to literally transform my jumping. My directional control has improved with my timing (no more dead sailors). I am now gapping 5 foot mild kickers without casing. Cheers!
That's great to hear!
