Welcome back to Casually Competitive MTG! We are a group of friends who enjoy playing fast-paced, semi-competitive EDH / cEDH games. In today’s game we have some guests on the channel from Playing with Power, Play to Win, and The Spike Feeeders to play some Magic: The Gathering. Mike here, I misplayed big with Orvar, on the turn I cast chain of vapor I should've sacrificed a land, copied it to target Tergrid. Then when you replayed Tergrid and activated Liliana, I couldve used Orvar's third line of text to make a copy of Tergrid and get your permanents instead >:) Was still new to Orvar and missed a fairly obvious line there. Oh well, great games!
I was so excited to see Orvar’s discard effect after you bounced him. Perfect opportunity vs Tergrid. But that Frantic Search discard :(

Really glad you didnt do that lol. Sounds like I wouldve gotten blown out super hard.
You would've missed the first round of discard, but you would've robbed everything else. Tergrid gets destroyed by clone effects.

It was so painful to cut out pieces of paper to write all the cards out every time lol.
@@Sliver_Boi I can't recommend infinitokens enough. Just played against a Tergrid over spelltable last night, and they were super helpful for the Tergrid player.

I'm not surprised at all. I built her as a troll deck just to mess with everyone. By the time they had their commander's out and a semi board state. They had no hands. Then shortly I took what was on their field. To say the least I no longer have friends. Tergrid is worth it though. Tergrid is prescious. >_>
Just goes to show what a commander like Tergrid can do if left alone. Great game though!

I could not believe it when Liliana survived the first round she was out. That was brutal.
Perks of having a giant 4/5 butt on a commander but yeh that made me hurt
I'm interested to see how Tergrid pops off with less combo-focused decks. She is extremely strong when she gets going and I noticed there weren't a whole ton of removal or control effects happening this game (besides Tergrids side of course)
That was an insane showing for tergrid. That probably was among the best showings you could even hope for.

So... Tegrid is a target on sight commander. Not a surprise at all, but actually seeing it in action confirms what so many people said about it when it was spoiled
Yeah I really want to build Tegrid but she is going to be a top 5 kill on sight commander for sure.
It all depends on how the player created the deck. Plus this is the only of the four games that saw Tergrid as the winner (iirc)
Tergrid + Deathcloud Is a dream play.
Pox, Smallpox and Memory Jar are all great too
This just shows why I love this game so much. I've had desolation for what seems like forever, don't remember how or where I got it. Sat in the bulk box as a dead card forever. Here we are in 2021 and now a mono black legendary creature has made it like a 10 dollar card. Great showing guys.

I built Tergrid and took it apart yesterday. Tergrid isn't just the kill on sight commander, you become the kill on sight player. In 5 games I played, I got killed by turn 5 on pretty much all of them and Tergrid got countered or removed the turn she came out literally every time.
You should keep it and add more protection...it's a deck that makes you a big threat at the table, but the deck is capable of controlling the game with ease even if Tergrid isn't on the field

Maybe i'm missing something but how does Jan survived to liliana's activation when he only had 3 life and no cards to discard?

I like how the alt line of the consultation win, which people aren't a fan of, is a poison counter win, which people aren't a fan of

I JUST finished puting together a Grixis discard deck, with Tergrid in it. This video got me so damn pumped to play it!
Cards like Thoracle still make me question if WotC actually had a mindset of banning "counter or die" spells.
Granted, Thoracle by itself is not the counter-or-die, but there are so, soooooo many ways to make her that.
If I ever build tergrid I’ll have to buy a pack of salt. At least half kg 🤣
The wincons on these decks other that Tergrid seem pretty narrow / unsupported by the rest of the deck design.
Would actually be curious how they would fair against a 6-7 deck table.
Honestly all those commanders kind of op just that people don’t run much removal.
You can't answer everything and that's part of the problem.

You mean like... one of the top mono colors? Because we already knew that on account of all the tutors/card draw, removal, big rampy effects for each swamp you control, and now hatebears (see: Opposition Agent).

Do you think tergrid is a better commander than tinybones?
I think tergrid provides a better threat while you look for the win con, a good one is tinybones. A big menacing creature that really makes people think about their plays because of the implications of what could be sacked or discarded and then stolen.
yes, I turned my tiny bones into a tergrid deck and didnt change any cards.
Yes, Tergrid is lightyears ahead of Tinybones.

Everyone tells me Chainer dementia master can't be cEDH. But I win tournaments with it. I can swap it with k'rrik and it's even worse.

Not surprising... I mean, everyone knows It That Betrays is a "kill on sight" card, and a commander that has that same effect PLUS stealing discarded permanent cards? Either you deal with it or it will spiral out of control.
The fact that it's ITB but better and for less than half the mana is ridiculous: even at the FOURTH CAST, it still costs less mana than ITB!

Oh ffs, I was going to let it pass, but seriously, I'm pretty sure it's a 'y' sound in Jorn's name, like Jan is traditionally pronounced in it's native lands, ironically enough. Same with Firja I'd assume.
Man, it’s almost like a 12 mana win condition should NOT cost half of that and be accessible at any moment as your commander... pretty broke

Why is she auto banned? There’s many other commanders far nastier then her.
My best guess is that people don't like when they have to discard/sacrifice their toys and then someone steals them.
Also Tergrid usually doesn't win on the spot like other more problematic commanders when their combo is online, so playing against it is just a long slugfest where hardly anyone is having fun

Only to some extent. Whenever I hear people actually defend bans against cards like Uro or Oko, I just can't help but question if they understand what should qualify as "ban worthy".
@@bobby45825 past examples help. Take primeval titan or prophet of kruphix. Both were banned in edh because they became the single revolving point of a game as soon as they: were cast, resolved, hit a graveyard, got copied, got countered, got stolen, you get the idea. Tergrid is not doing reasonable things by any means. Plus with 2 modes that win you the game upon resolving A. A sac effect or B. Oops all infinite mana. IN THE COMMAND ZONE is even further justification for ban
@@Slapthatham Power levels have shifted immensely. I can't agree with prime time or sylvan primordial being banned anymore. Blink strategies were a thing many many years ago. The answers to the those strategies are various and maindeck worthy now.
Tergrid is really strong but not so much different from It that Betrays. Also, i'm all for creating dual edh formats of EDH and cEDH, specifically known as "Restricted" and "Unrestricted". In Restricted, Infinites can occur but are capped at 15 (x) of whatever the loop is and then just stopped. Combo players have been dominating and causing anguish to both edh players and the design team for a long time now. It needs to stop and infinites is the perfectly fair line to draw the differentiation at.
@@bobby45825 we're debating 2 different things and that's not constructive. Tergrid is unreasonable as a commander and deserves a ban. We can justify our points in circles forever, we're magic players lol.
@@Slapthatham "Unreasonable" is NOT a valid position most of the time in commander, given any one single card. Tergrid can be killed, exiled, transformed into something useless, stolen, etc. It's not a hexproof, indestructible, 10/10 infect creature with Sire of Insanity's ability stapled on to him. Quit acting like a 5 drop with menace is completely destroying all of your decks by itself. Also, if it is, perhaps include answers to stop cards like Tergrid.

My playgroup has already shied away from tergrid. It’s too strong and too easy to win in our opinions. Even in the 99 if it lands, you usually are gonna win.
