  • There are a few steps that you need to take before tackling this project. You will need to take off the dash pad, then remove the dash panel and disconnect the wiring harness, then you can remove the upper cowl air intake and lower heater box. I have a few videos that should help out with getting to this point:

    Great attitude working on a CJ, the REAL Jeeps. Doing same thing myself,1981 CJ7, 304 V8 with 300,000+ miles on it. Thing is with a CJ, it's so damn easy to work on, once you take it apart the *first* time. Been Jeep'in for 30+ years here, and I'll never get rid of my CJ.
    Good vid with a little humor/attitude. Wish you good luck putting it back together, which is easier once you have done it. Cheers...

      That video is for the 84. Finished that up last year. Almost done with the second one, 79 CJ7 Golden Eagle in Olympic white. 98% OEM. Plenty of differences between the 79 and 84. :)

    Figured out a trick to reinstall the heater box today.. put a small floor jack in the passenger floor space under the heater box as you align the hoses and studs

      @coolguy_CJ7  Před 3 lety

      Oh, I like that. Keeps it in place while you connect it from the engine side. Brilliant!

    @Cool Guy, What order do you recommend reassembly? And did you find that some of the cowl vent cover screws were not secured into the shroud piece? In other words they were too short and just served to secure the vent to the cowl sheet metal

      Sure could. I picked up a basket case of a jeep and am trying to avoid taking things apart more than I need!

    I have a 1985 CJ7, looks to be the same exact color as yours. Previous owner painted it that color with rattle cans 👎. I noticed the original color of my Jeep was gold. I can see gold paint on my fire wall and some other spots through the Jeep. (Wish it was still gold) It looks like your Jeep might have originally been gold also, at least by the looks of your firewall?

      @coolguy_CJ7  Před 4 lety +1

      You are accurate in your assessment. I'll look up the original color name. I believe it was called cinnamon. The paint that was put on there by POs was a combination of primer (brick color) black undercoating, what looks and seems like tar, fiberglass, epoxy, silicone sealant and good old fashion spray paint (gold). It was been completely sandblasted and repaired. I'll post a video about it soon.

      To further build on that, my wife loved the primer color and effect. Had a beat up jeep look to it (severe understatement). So I had to figure out how to replicate that as best as I could. What I did is pretty damn cool in my opinion. I put down Dusk Canyon Copper by Eastwood and then top coated it with their rat rod matte clear coat. Really impressive! Look for that to come in the next week or so.

    I get a very little coolant on my passenger floor sometimes. Is this perhaps from the heater core?

    • @coolguy_CJ7
      @coolguy_CJ7  Před 5 měsíci

      There is a small 3/4” drain pipe that goes through the firewall that serves as a drain port for the heater box. Slide a piece of tissue paper in the and see if it absorbs anything. If it does, there is your sign. Could also be coming from the 2 hoses that connect to the heater core on the engine side of the firewall.

      @@coolguy_CJ7 Awesome, thanks! So coolant runs in and out of the heater core? don't think I knew that.

    • @coolguy_CJ7
      @coolguy_CJ7  Před 5 měsíci

      @@davebrown5403 yep. There are 2 hoses that come from your intake manifold that connect to the heater core on the left side of the engine bay fire wall. Should be 3/4” hoses or 5/8”. I can’t remember…

      May not be my best shot video because it was early on, but when I did most of the videos, there was nothing on CZcams. That’s why I videoed everything, so you could benefit from my failures and successes. Not everything that I’ve done or did was because I knew what I was doing. I learned as I went.
