  • Yet another Spider-Man Video Essay, this one is actually a Spider-Man: Homecoming Video Essay. This Video Essay is titled why Spider-Man Homecoming is a Bad Spider-Man Movie. This is the 5th Spider-Man Video Essay HiTop Films has done, I'm losing my mind. Spider-Man 2 Chocolate Cake, Civil War v. Justice League, Fixing Spider-Man 3, Fixing The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I don't know if I can take it anymore. What did you guys think of Spider-Man Homecoming? How many times can I type Spider-Man in the description before you notice. What is your favorite Spider-Man Movie, mine is still Spider-Man 2. Will the algorithm notice HiTop Films yet? Does anybody even read the description of a video essay. Well, anyways...

I feel like the consequence point is one of your best. Spider-Man is a series built on the idea of taking action, and the consequences of those actions. Spider-Mans entire journey originates from the idea that he made the choice to not be a hero, which cost him his Uncle Ben. His actions had consequences, and that’s why he became the hero that we know him as.

The dude is a teen trying to make money, teens are edgy and insecure, that's why he was relatable. It's what keeps him from being Iron Man 2.0. It's also a key part of his character. You lose a lot of his development when you forget that teens AREN'T happy go lucky, that they CAN be impulsive, that they DON'T look up to authority. Especially when they're poor and working outside of the law for money. That's what his creators thought was a cornerstone of his character.
Him getting into the Avengers took years and multiple attempts (I think he wasn't official till the 2000s), in the meantime he had grown significantly so by the time he finally joined he wasn't a high school student brushing shoulders with Vietnam vets. @@Aiasmor Even as a 15 year old, Peter is supposed to be someone who grows up fast and has many responsibilities to take care of. If you've seen Spectacular Spider-Man, he's also in high school and is around 15-16 years old. Yet he has to worry about helping Aunt May pay bills and getting a job to do that. The whole reason Spider-Man was made as a 15 year old superhero as opposed to an adult one was to show him handling adult responsibilities as a kid. To show that a kid could do all the stuff only adult superheroes did back when Spider-Man was first created, when teenagers would only ever be sidekicks. The world isn't supposed to go easy on Peter because he's a kid. That takes away a huge part of what makes his character special from his high school days.
MCU Spider-Man seems to be headed in that direction now from the looks of it though so it seems that even they've heard the complaints people have and are taking steps to correct that.

now that no way home is out, the mcu trilogy of spiderman movies feels like a cohesive character arc for this version of Peter Parker. Each movie brings him closer to the reality of the consequences of his double life. First with how miserable he made Liz, second with Mysterio betraying him, and now finally making him grow as a superhero with SPOILERS
the death of Aunt May in no way home. Even more so with losing both Ned and Michelle with Dr. Strange's spell at the end.
The issue with homecoming is literally because they backed themselves into a corner by having Stark bring up Peter in Civil War. Because of that introduction, Peter was now a significantly carried Spider-Man, which they got rid of in far from home as Stark's death leaves Peter with self-esteem and identity issues. Mysterio's contingency plan makes Peter the most vulnerable he's ever been, which makes no way home the ultimate Spider-Man film, building the Peter Parker we know from the comics and other media over the course of 3 movies, culminating in a finale that really blows the MCU since Endgame, out of the water.
Not to say that no way home invalidates this video, but I feel like they definitely capitalized on their rough intro with Spider-Man in the MCU.

This is true but only if you assume that Toby Maguire Spider-Man is comics-accurate. Spider-Man Homecoming is adapting the Spider-Man comics, not the Toby Maguire films. In the comics, Uncle Ben is really insignificant. He doesn't even say "With great power comes great responsibility", that line is just narration. And although responsibility is why he becomes Spider-Man, it isn't why he keeps being Spider-Man. Arguably Homecoming captures Spider-Man better.

To me, the _most_ defining characteristic of Spider-Man/Peter Parker is that he is responsible. More than his life being miserable, he's responsible; it informs all of his behavior. Peter has had moments in which his life goes well; maybe happily married, but he's still responsible. Peter has briefly given up at times, so his most defining characteristic isn't that "no matter how many times he's knocked down, he gets back up". Pay attention to what motivates him when he goes back to being Spider-Man; it's due to feeling the responsibility of being able to help and not doing so. Peter Parker is relatable, but he isn't defined by being "the everyman", he's defined by learning the lesson Uncle Ben tried to teach him too late and constantly trying to "save Uncle Ben," whether the "Uncle Ben" in question is Aunt May, his best friend's dad, Gwen Stacey, or a stranger due to knowing that this stranger is "someone's Uncle Ben".
People are who they are when they are in the dark. When no one knows and therefore no one can hold Peter responsible, he still holds himself responsible. It's easy to be the hero when you are rewarded for it. Some heroes don't get rewarded, but they get indifference; their praises aren't sung. Spider-Man often does the right thing, but doesn't get rewarded and doesn't even get indifference, but instead, the universe kicks him in the teeth for it, which of course makes him want to quit, but he knows that when he doesn't do anything, "Uncle Ben dies all over again". Even when Peter is crippled, he still tries to help in one way, or another, due to having had a lot of experience being a hero by that point that he feels he can do something, even if it's not the full Spider-Man schtick.
I love and relate to Peter Parker due to his nerdy, intellectual side, but I respect, admire and seek to emulate him due to his steadfast responsibility. Spider-Man is the kid who, due to his difficult experiences, manages to be more responsible than the adults around him. He lost his mentor, feels lost and inadequate, but actually manages to outdo pretty much everyone in being a good, responsible, caring hero, even though he usually takes a long while to realize it; living in imposter syndrome until he does.

If anything he's a great Spider man for ditching the chance to be cool in order to catch some bad people. Endangering his friends at Washington helps the Vulture realize that Peter is Spider man, thus putting his and his family's lives in danger. Ditching Liz makes her break up with him and stop hanging out with him, and Peter ditched her in order to stop her dad. I see everything you're talking about, but, for some reason none of it really bothers me. Peter may not be suffering life-altering consequences but he still struggled. I don't need every single choice in his life to be a severe cause-and-effect. He still struggles and has to bounce back from stuff, and is clearly just barely holding the dual identities thing together. He's flying by the seat of pants, and that feels very Peter.
Him having such a technological suit is a byproduct of them forcing him into the MCU when/how they did. If we didn't want him to have that suit, then they should have waited until after Civil War to introduce Peter. It was already introducing Black Panther after all. Peter felt like an afterthought in Civil War, as fantastic as his scenes were in it.
Also, hard disagree on Michelle. I have a huge softspot for snarky broods who aren't really threats and actually mean well. The fact she has a crush on Peter makes her behavior really endearing to me; she's afraid to open up honestly, as we see in her final scene. Also, I don't have much experience with Mary Jane beyond Raimi 1 and 3 (never saw 2 lol), but has she ever been a super deep character either? Not to besmirch her character in the slightest, but the biggest trait I've ever garnered about her was that she has red hair. Ultimately, Michelle Jones and Mary Jane are clearly two different characters, even if they do both fill the same spot of being Peter's "MJ."
