Hi Shinosuke 😂
I saw this before getting burned, now I will not get burned 😌😎.
Keep it that way my back is covered in blisters and I have no option but to cry
As a GenX we were raised to worship the sun. Hours lying without protection, sometimes using just body oils to get that burnished copper look. It’s only these last few decades that we’ve learnt how harmful sunbathing can be.
Now I always follow a simple but effective routine when on holiday in the sun.
1: I apply sunscreens on my naked body and face at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Making sure I get my WHOLE body covered including the backs of my ears, my hair parting and in between fingers and toes. Only getting dressed once fully dry.
2: Reapply every couple of hours making sure areas like my nose and my buttocks are thoroughly covered as the sunscreen easily rubs off due to sunglasses and sitting on towels. Reapply inside of swimsuit hems by at least an inch in case of swimsuit slippage exposing unprotected skin.
3: Drink lots of water throughout the day and a good drink before the end of day shower when you get home.
4: After a nice cold blast at the end of the shower, pat skin dry gently before applying aloe Vera, food grade vitamin E oil and aftersun that has been stored in the fridge all day.
5: Another long cold drink before chillaxing.
Following these rules I’ve managed to reduce the sun damage as much as possible and remain youthful looking for my near half century of age. Although I am still a little regretful of my childhood bad habits of long days of sun exposure sans protection. I wonder how much better still my skin would be…
This is honestly such good information, love the recap/guide at the end. Love what you provide for us with all your videos, thank you so much!
I come from a sunburn avoidance family. My mother was a nurse and treated too many bad sunburns in the 50’s. When clear sunscreens started to come out in the 70’s she was an immediate purchaser. She also taught me early that covering up was a great option! So many people I know are suffering from skin cancer now and it’s a real killer! Never had a burn that peeled until I was 17 and it was the very top of my shoulders! I’ve carried it through to my own family. We are still nice and tan looking but apply sunblock, long before we are outside and reapply very often. Loved your tips and am pleased to hear a Dr’s take on sunburn care. Same thing my mama did and always made myself and my family feel better even if people thought I was wrong to use cold wet towels, tons of moisturizer, gallons of drink and ibuprofen.
This is convenient given that I transformed to freaking tomato bisque lobster yesterday.
You are soo lucky. My mother would burn me 3 times a summer since infancy. All so I can have "cute" freckles on my face.
Always love y’all’s videos! Would be awesome if yall made a video about estheticians working in the derma office. Also how estheticians can help contribute even though we are not dermatologist. I would love to show our esthys students at the school!
Thanks for posting. I got so burned yesterday, first time in 20 plus years. Wasn't expecting to be outside. Im sooooo pale and now glowing red shoulders
Same, but with my neck 😢
Same (all these months later). I'm so disappointed in myself for even letting it happen, but here I am and, like you said, my pale skin is glowing red. I honestly never knew I should be using vaseline to soothe the damaged skin.
Very timely video, thank you! My husband just got a peeling sunburn on vacation!
Love how well you both explain things. Im.a sensitive skin gal and you've help me tremendously on finding products that I can use.
I has an extreme sunburn 3 weeks ago. My face, neck, chest and both arms and hands. I used aloe after about 3 hours which helped a lot. I then bought Emuaid Maximum strength because it said its good for sunburn. I got instance relief from the pain and swelling. It also took down some of the redness. I applied 2x/day and recovered nicely. I still peeled, of course.... this was a very informative video. Thank you!
After you peeled, did you go back to your initial skin shade or got darker?
I stayed darker until it faded a couple of months later as my skin shed naturally. I don't normally spend time in the sun or outside without sunscreen.
In 1996 my husband and I went to a Sarasota, Florida beach. I was chilling under a sun umbrella while he was floating on the waves for 2 1/2 Hours. He had fallen asleep on the float. By the time we got back to the motel he was very red, and starting to feel sick. We were young I didn't know what to do to help him. In hindsight we probably should have gone to the ER because of how sick and in pain. He was also very dehydrated because he passed out on the bed and I couldn't wake him for hours. I was only burned on the toe side of my feet and just a little on my shoulders. Something to remember about beaches is sometimes
the sand works like a mirror and reflects back to you.
Something else I don't think a lot of people realize is that Florida is much closer to the equator than northern states. I moved down here from Michigan, and I knew it got hot down here because I used to visit all the time when I was younger. But it didn't occur to me exactly how much stronger the sun would be here. A couple years ago, I didn't reapply sunscreen like I should have, and I got sunburned so badly that wearing clothes hurt. Certainly nothing close to what happened to your husband (I'm so glad he turned out to be alright!), but still really painful! I learned my lesson from that moment!
(But I have to say, falling asleep in the sun like that sounds like something I could do. When you get warmed all over like that, and the waves are just lulling you...yeah, that's the real siren's song. 😅😂
My best friend and I fell asleep on a beach in the Caribbean and we were absolutely miserable the next day. But fortunately we weren't that sick. We just looked ridiculous. I'm glad your hubbie was eventually OK and that you were spared!
Thank you for doing that google search example! I never know if I should trust what I see on google, and I truly appreciate context from a medical professional!
Just watched this with my 8 year old! This deeply helped. He gave a thumbs up at the end and became friends with the aloe gel and water bottle I had prior been begging to get him to use!
Very informative! Thank you for the good information, especially your detailed timeline on what to do.
As an ocean lifeguard, thank you for posting this! Im slightly burnt right now, and needs some skincare tips!!
7:43 My niece has dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa and gets blisters very easily--when we have to lance the blisters and help them heal we always use Vaseline. Significantly speeds up the healing process!
I was diagnosed with a sun allergy nearly 60 years ago and I'm a California girl. I started out wearing zinc oxide. I went to a lake for water skiing, and got badly burned, because I forgot it. I broke out in herpes, I probably should have been in the hospital. I said never again. And now at 74, no one believes my age. So glad you beat the drum for sunscreen
Thank you for posting this video! Very informative
For symptom management of sunburns, my dad used to keep a bottle of aloe in the fridge. :) It's ice cold at first but then you get both the cooling and soothing benefits. I got so many sunburns as a kid obsessed with swimming lol
I make sure to take sunscreen literally everywhere with me now lol I got little bottles of it in the car and every bag and I put some on before heading out.
You’re videos are my absolute favorite!
Not sunburned, just early 😉
Love all the info. I always wear SPF 70 and up even though Im olive skinned.
I saw a study on aging when I was like 15(28 now) and have always worn sunblock ever since. I had a sunburn only 3 times in my life, never to this damage, though.
Hey there! Would y’all consider a video about seborrheic dermatitis friendly skincare? While I’ve developed a routine that works for me, it took years and it’s a real challenge finding products that don’t cause flares or irritate an existing flare. I’m loving your channel!
Perfectly timed 🙌✨ had a beach day yesterday!
Going to the beach all day tomorrow! I needed this! Thank you 😭🤍
I love your videos! Thank you!!!
Thank you for including allergic-to-aloe options in the guide!!
Great video right before summer!! 🎉 Those VIDEO EDITS THOUGH. 😂
This was so informative. Thank you.
This is a fantastic video! Sent it to my husband and friends.
Oh boy back in the day baby oil & iodine, who knew about wearing sunscreen 😢now my life living in Florida sunscreen 365 days a year. Great video 🤗
Hey, since your talking about sunburns, could you do a video about choosing the right sunscreen for your skin?
Maybe explain what types are available and how they can affect the skin.
Thanks for your videos they are really helpful! ❤
There's a whole bunch of videos on this channel about selecting the right sunscreen
Great info. Many years ago, I fell asleep on the beach at the Jersey shore and ended up with a severe burn on my thighs. The pain was so bad, I ended up at the Dr's office. He prescribed Silvadene cream. Though expensive, it was amazing how well it worked. Is that still a good cream to use nowadays? Thanks for the great vids.
Love you guys! As always, thanks so much. ❤️
So...Vaseline and Saran wrapped around my head. Got it. Thank you!
Please make an in depth video on microneedling and laser treatment for the improvement of acne scars.
Thanks much ,interesting info ,well needed ❤
I went sailing with my friends yesterday. Lets say this video comes at a great time 😅
I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!
Greetings from Greece 🙃❤
Years ago I had a derm tell me to keep some sunscreen with Zinc Oxide in my fridge, and to put it on if I ever got a sunburn. The fridge provides the cooling, and the zinc oxide has antioxidants and soothing properties for the burn. Luckily I haven't had to resort to using it, because I try to make sure I don't get burned to start with, but I still keep it in my fridge just in case. It actually seemed to feel better than the aloe products did, because some have alcohol in them to help it dry faster, but it also drys out your skin. So, sunscreen for the win!!
Or you can use Avène Cicalfate. It contains zinc/copper complex. Ideal for irritations and sunburns.
@Doctorly I have been binge watching your videos all night!!! but I havent seen anything about skincare for athletes..... could we get this video sometime in the future??? Thanks!!!!!
Very useful 👍🏼
You guys should have also mentioned UPF rash guards more strongly. UPF 50 rash guards don’t wash off and you don’t have to reapply them!!
When I was a kid buttermilk or plain yogurt was great relief on sunburnt skin.
Great tips my husband burnt last year in Greece 🇬🇷 hopefully the first and last time and the itchiness he couldn’t cope with , when we googled it hells itch kept coming up
can you please do video about saunas ? I visit dry finnish sauna twice a week and I am not sure if I am doing it right. Does it have some beneficials for skin? And how to protect my skin in that hot and dry environment? Love your work guys, watch your videos everyday! Thank you for sharing your skin wisdom!
Thank you so much for this video 👍
can u guys do a video on chemical peels and POST chemical peel care? espically for POC. U guys mentioned Vaseline for sun burns and how there is a misconception with its use and burns i heard the same thing when the skin is sloughing off after a chemical peel, some say not to use it with peels for a similiar reason.
Hydrocortisone helps to reduce inflammation and still reduce the itching that comes as result of the sun burn. Tomato (Lycopene)helps as well as aloe Vera.
I’m extremely fair. In the 1990s, despite my use of sunblock, I totally fried after a day at a lake. You haven’t lived until you’re crouched by the toilet, barfing while your skin is too hot and tight to move. Had to get prednisone and painkillers and missed a week of work. I still radiated heat for two weeks! 🔥
Was waiting for this bad badly
Thank you for making us laugh while educating us! 😂
I like the way you show the product the we need to get
Hey guys 💖 You posted a video about the best sunscreens and you mentioned the well-known Elta Md UV Clear Tinted Sunscreen. The problem is that I have found a video that claims that this sunscreen doesn’t have great UVA protection. Which would of course be problematic for skin with hyperpigmentation. If possible, could you find out the UVA coverage of this sunscreen so that people can be more sure about their skin being protected?
Thanks guys!!
The most effective treatment i've ever tried is "Hyperici oleum rubrum"(in my opinion it should not be made with olive oil, but jojoba or almond oil that can then be mixed with vaseline).
It is highly effective in helping healthy tissue regeneration and preventing or can even undo scarring especially in 3. degree burns it can make a diffrence between 15% healthy tissue and 85% healthy tissue after healing as a study showed.
It is very important though, that it is phototoxic, so under no circumstances the skin treated with it should get any sunlight/strong UV for at least a day.
In my last Red Cross first aid class, the instructor recommended covering burns with Saran wrap.
You don't have to reapply sunscreen on normal fays you are inside, at your home or office... But you MUST reapply when you are under the sun for many hours. Following the every 2hour rule is ideal if you are between 12pm-4pm, in the morning the sun is a little less intense and the same applies to after 4pm.
You do need to reapply sunscreen inside if you work or spend time close to a window as most of them only block the UVB rays. UVA rays are the ones responsible for skin's aging.
Love your videos. Have you guys done anything on EGF?
Hi doctors,
You are both my trusted skin doctors on youtube- thats why when i have questions, watch you guys. I enjoy the question and answer videos.
I hope you can accommodate my request for a review on this popular Hada Labo whitening set. It seems so popular but when i googled it it said that it is not fda approved. I am really looking forward to it because I plan to try it soon but not without your go signal.
Thank you
❤❤❤PLEASE do a video on strawberry legs for the summer!! 🙏🏼
Please do a video about periorbital pigmentation...is it cure permanently?
The la roche posay cicaplast baume is my holy grail for many things including sunburns. Do my best to avoid them but if it happens that is my go to.
Doctorly could you please do a rejuvenating videos please?
I found vit c and vit e topical. This decreases symptoms very quickly. I live in New Zealand sunburn is a common problem even in the winter.
I had a painful burn I took a Tylenol or Advil can’t remember which one but it did really help with the pain. But made a promise to myself this will never happen again.
The cerave itch cream is also indicated for sunburns.
Can you please make a video about small Cosmetic procedures, like lip blushing, microblading, Botox
Could you talk about the risk of sunscreen ingredience? It seems to me that only TiO2 and ZnO2 are classified as by the FDA. And i would just want to understand how problematic all other ingredients are, as most products without a white cast contain them. That would be really informative and awesome!! 🙇♀️
Love from Somalia ❤🎉
I always get sick in the summer especially right after lots of sun exposure. As someone who burns super easy (blonde and blue eyed), I totally think aloe is crucial! I like to take a shower in cooler warm water day one, then hotter the next day. I'll have an advil, and if I remember I take emmergen-C and astaxanthin (works better if taken before but oh well). The first couple days are critical to how many layers of skin I end up losing. If I can get hydrated and moisturized ASAP I might not peel, or very little.
Question 🙋♀️: can you use after sun as an everyday moisturizer? My mom uses the la roche posay posthelios after Sun gel as everyday moisturizer and swears by it. We both have dry acne prone skin with rosacea and after using the after sun gel for a couple weeks I can really notice a difference in her skin (way more radiant and less irritated). What are your thoughts?
I’ve used a bunch of stuff for the symptoms and Vicks vapor rub it’s what works best for me.
I appreciate the D&D reference at the end. It tickled my funny bone. x3
I don't understand how people go to the beach without any sun protection. great video 👍
Thanks for your content, do you have advice for infrared Sauna usage.Thanx😊
Would love to hear what you think of treating rash caused by sun sensitivity.
Growing up, I lived in the southwest and only once I had 2nd/3rd degree sunburn that involved blistering. My mom found some Solarcaine and it was the best stuff ever.
Twice in my teens I was sunburned to where I had blisters all over my back. I'm surprised you did not talk about blisters. I would soak in cold baths and slept in our basement as it naturally retained cold air. Had to sleep on my stomach. Should we have popped the blisters?
Thanks for the video! I would be curious to learn more about sun allergy in the future! For example is getting a rash or hives just as damaging to the cells as as a sunburn for someone who has a sun allergy? Are some of the same sunburn tips applicable to help heal a reaction caused by the sun? Are high value spfs worth it for the condition (since I've heard spfs above a certain degree doesn't really offer that much more protection)?
May everyone have a safe memorial day weekend
Are you guys able to make a video on the best at home lazer removal please 🙏🏼
Dr. Shah and Dr. Maxfield for the win! I love learning from you.
I was in Hawaii and put sunscreen on my arms and broke out in a rash. I wasn't sure if I was having heat rash or an allergy to the sunscreen. the rash only appeared where I put sunscreen on. Any ideas? :)
Please make a video about BABY SHAMPO FOR WEAK HAIR IS THAT GOOD??
Can you guys cover scalp sunscreen and how to treat scalp sunburn? Some people have very short hair (buzz cut or Dr. Maxfield on the sides), and others have thinning or bald heads. Seems like regular sunscreen lotions aren't easy to put on, and you don't always want to wear a hat (like when swimming).
My husband uses distilled vinegar when he gets a sunburned! It smells, but he claims that it helps with the burning, and heals quickly.
Please do a video on Dermatofibroma and how to treat it please please please 😊
Do you guys have any videos on Alopecia specifically on the face/beard? I need answers 😢
Question: how long after a sunburn can I recommence applying a retinoid? :)
can you make a video about sunburns and rosacea?
We appreciate you both DOC🌼💕🌸
What about Panthenol foam? The best thing for the sunburns (or any burns, really) EVER. Once my BF got really severe sunburns, we applied Panthenol foam immediately, and the next day he only had sunburns on the areas that we missed while applying the foam. Dunno, maybe you guys don't have it in the USA, but for those in Europe that's your #1 choice.
i’m in the us with horrible sunburns on my legs and i need this! lol 😭
Love from India ❤
Love from Indiana😉😁💗
Hello from the Caribbean. 🥵
I live in Europe (Belgium). we use much more Nivea from the bleu thin. Is this known to you ? Nivea is known as a very good thick cream for almost any problem, sun burn, scarfs, wound healing etc. is this known to you ? Thank you for helping uns in Europe ;-)
How about a video on PMLE? So many people don’t realize that’s what happens to them the start of each spring or summer after first sun exposure.
What is PMLE? 🤔
The fact this came up a day after I was asking about this on the Q&A! 😂
Hi can you do a skin routine for kids?
How’s Versed Guards Up? Worth it?
Right on time for summa baking😂💜💪🏽
My husband got burned and he wanted something to help with his burn and I put my lotions like cerave and cetaphil on it because i didn't have after sun :) thanks!!
That light and energy from the sun is so so good for you.. go out and get burned, it will do you more good than harm
