Amen Kian. I find it impossible to re-read a Holmes story without imagining Jeremy as Sherlock. He, and the Granada show as a whole, nailed it. Until something else comes along that's as faithful to the source material/character, he's permanently in my head cast. "Sherlock" and Cumberbatch are a lot of fun but the departure they've made from the source material keeps anybody in that cast from coming to mind while reading the original stories. Which I think would be fine with Moffat/Gatiss/Cumberbatch/etc as I don't think they were ever trying to replace the literary character or any other portrayal, just trying to create something new out of the familiar.

Admiral Tug Benson I've liked John Watson's modern update because we rarely understand the reasons why he became Sherlock Holmes faithful companion. Otherwise, I've loved Jeremy Brett and Ian Richardson as Sherlock for breathing life into ACD's creation.

My biggest regret is that I never got as into Jeremy Brett's version as I am now when my granddad was still alive. He LOVED Sherlock Holmes, and Jeremy was his absolute favourite interpretation. I was only young and thought anything set in the "olden days" was boring. Then I randomly found myself watching an episode one day, and was laughing more in the first ten minutes than I ever expected to laugh at any part of it. An absolutely AMAZING performer with the perfect blend of intensity and eccentricity. Ah, well. I hope wherever he is, he's watching and can see how I miss him and how much I now love JB. 💖

I share your feelings for Jeremy, his portrayal of Holmes is beyond amazing, he was an incredible man, a great actor and when he died my heart was broken, I had read he had health issues but I didn't know he was close to death. I am happy that Jeremy had a son, David Huggins, Huggins was Jeremy's actual last name to carry on the bloodline. I'm now watching the entire series of Sherlock Holmes from 1984 to 1994, I find myself laughing and crying as I watch his performances. The show was so well produced, the cast was expertly picked and the modified script only added to the original stories. Everything, the railroad cars and engines, the horses and buggies, the old architecture, the in era clothing and so much more brought life to each episode, it led you to believe you were watching scenes from the late 1800's or at least it visually looked that way. Jeremy gave me an appreciation of how a self respecting man should behave, with class, how to dress and present himself. I realize he was just playing a part but I believe a part of Jeremy's own personality was incorporated into ACD's Holmes which only enhanced the character. I will miss and admire Jeremy until I pass. Rest well Jeremy, you are loved and missed by millions, God has you now.

These Granada Productions were very faithful to the stories. For decades since the beginning of film Holmes fans were waiting for these superlative expositions. Jeremy Brett was everything needed and more. The production values, the sets and the other actors Burke, Hardwicke et al brought the stories to life perfectly. The beauty of all this is that now any director or actors hired to have a go at the Holmes stories do not have to compete as it has already been done. So now they are free to experiment. The Benedict Cumberbatch/Martin Freeman productions were great. I hope they do more. Long live our appreciation and enjoyment of Jeremy Brett, we were lucky to have shared time on this planet with such a great actor.

Good compilation. For me, the two best Jeremy Brett moments are the end of "The Copper Beeches" after he tells Watson that he defers to his taste, the look on Holmes' face is hilarious; and the end of "The Six Napoleons" when he shows such depth of emotion wordlessly as Lestrade tells him that Scotland Yard is proud of him.

Every actor expresses well some aspect of the Sherlock Holmes mythos. Jeremy Brett focused on the character himself, the darkness, the pain of a powerful mind, the torment that the only serious use was in tackling evil - giving him only bleakness and horror to look forward to. I think Brett showed that the seven percent solution was not just the mundane aspects of life but that Holmes' every waking moment was spent in a nightmare or craving one because the pauses were worse, and that the nightmares were devouring him.
Under such conditions, what's a little irritation? Particularly as nobody becomes a doctor or a scientist if they're not quite capable of observation, deduction and differential diagnosis. Indeed Conan Doyle based his methods on the practices of both. His bumbling detectives are products of his experience with actual detectives who attempted to destroy his career by slander, threats and intimidation, so we can take it as read that detectives of the time deserved every bit of his venom.
As such, all the detectives and both the Watsons are superb in themselves. Watson has his moments and is portrayed as someone who conscientiously tries to practice what he has been taught, albeit not that well. Holmes' frustration comes from knowing Watson could do better. The dynamics between the actors shows this tension magnificently.
For these dynamics and inner workings, Jeremy Brett and the remainder of the cast are absolutely superb. The writers and producers, not so much - Jeremy Brett had to put them in their place and threatened to quit a few times if they wouldn't stop interfering. His strength and presence make those interventions possible and gave us a rendition that was infinitely superior to the watered-down amateur dramatics version originally planned.

    4. Peter Cushing
    5. Robert Stephens

Jack McCullough Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Rathbone's portrayal immensely. Before Brett, Rathbone's Holmes was largely considered to be the definitive take on the role, which is an opinion shared by many - even the writers of Sherlock. To my own personal tastes, however flawed they may appear, Rathbone was too warm, too friendly. The vision of Holmes I took away from the books was of a character who was strange, aloof, cold, and blunt. Something that Cumberbatch captures, at least in the first two series.

I loved that! Jeremy cannot be beaten as my favorite Sherlock, in fact I only think of him usually, if someone mentions something about Sherlock Holmes. One of my quotations from him is when Dr. Grimesby Roylette finally storms out and he says, "What a very amiable person!" and "Thank you Mrs. Hudson, just another client."
Then there's "Watson, you have a blazing talent for stating the obvious." "I feel you have erred (the way he pronounces that, as if to rub it in on Watson for the way he writes up their adventures). I love it when he asks Dr. Huxtable to forgive him for rummaging through his pockets while the good professor had been passed out,,,, then he says, "It is not often that so notable a person as yourself is beached upon my hearth's rug."
And finally, in The Devil's Foot, Watson says something to Holmes, like "I'm sure the police will be in attendance and have begun to form their own conclusion." to which Sherlock says, "However erroneous they may be." that one cracks me up.
