  • GIMP 3 is going to be releasing... eventually, I'm not even going to try and make a prediction anymore but when it does happen Fedora Linux has got a pretty odd plan when it comes to shipping the application.

    When I hear things like GIMP 3.0 is on the horizon I get excited, but then I remember it has to be good enough that professionals switch as many did for Blender because it offered a rich feature set comparable to 3DSMax/Maya without the hefty price tag. From what I understand, GIMP 2.0 is way out of date, but then again I don't use any Adobe products as I don't have a need for them. Most photo editing I do on my phone as I think most basic users do. So the real market for something like GIMP is for people with a specific use case and professionals. But, even though I'm not a graphics professional and just familiar with the software and have some experience with their products, I know Adobe has more than just Photoshop and Premiere. Adobe also has After Effects, Illustrator, and Flash, all of which are cross-integrated. It seems like the year of the Linux desktop is going to be when either Linux has enough tools that will satisfy basic user needs (which it may already be there) or when there is a compelling suite of tools for professionals, which there probably wouldn't be without integration between disparate open source/free software projects.

    GIMP and its functionality is now more than two decades old, and even basic functions have not been implemented. These include non-destructive adjustment layers, smart-filters and a less destructive approach, which has long been standard in many other programs. At the same time, development is progressing at a snail's pace and there are now far better alternatives. The version is lagging behind just as much as the range of functions. What is the use of a 3 as a version number if the status somehow remains stuck in the early 2000s?

    The problem on Fedora is that they keep everything inside the same package. They can just do the same with moving the Python2 part to COPR, while maintaining the main part of GIMP2.

    • @guguludugulu
      @guguludugulu Před 4 dny +3

      Especially considering GTK originally was "Gimp ToolKit".
      But I wouldn't call it insane. Funny? - indeed. Ironic? - probably. But migrating a huge app with >20 years worth of legacy to a new version of a toolkit it uses for most of it's features is no easy feat. I'm not sure when the migration process started but I assume it's in the works for >5 years and given the size of their team it's more "duh" than insane. They probably could've tried to switch from GTK3 to GTK4 mid development and I'm sure they've considered it but decided that they could move to GTK3 faster with less pain (jumping two major versions is also often a lot harder than just migrate to the next one. Introduction of GTK3 is a step towards GTK4 just by the virtue of it being an intermediate version).
      And GTK3 still has lots of features that will benefit GIMP3 when it comes out, the most important one for me being wayland support.
      I've migrated several projects to new versions of toolkits or other technologies. None of them were as huge as GIMP (although they weren't small either 50k-100k loc generally). All of them were a PITA to deal with and a major time sink. It was worth it every time though.

Hobbyists could just as well use Gimp instead of Photoshop, sure, but if you're a professional and your workflow is based off of Photoshop, there's a huge can of worms being opened if you start making such a transition, if it's even possible at all. Also, it's not even necessarily about the money, it's about the work-hours you loose during the time of transition, which you couldn't spend on your regular work. Suggestion in 11:30 is what should be done, in my opinion. Ship gimp as meta package. And make it depend on gimp3 and gimp2. Then it will work for most people. And people can be suggested to uninstall gimp2 in the description in gimp and gimp2 when they think gimp3 is ready.
    And so should every transaction be done, with less confusion for users. Which is what should be cared for and made easy for. Developers doing this for the users, so if they have to think a bit to get it right, so let it be that.
    If you don't agree, go and ask Linus Torwalds about how Linux is managed. Basically, uses should be left with so little surprices as possible, and developers should see to that. Even if it means lots of work. That is, explicity not like in systemd. There are a video where they discuss the differens and Linus explain how Linux does that.

    Make a new package called gimp3. Rename the current package to gimp2. Have gimp-latest be an alias to whichever one is current (which would be gimp2 right now and through all release candidates, but would change to gimp3 later). And if you try to install gimp with no suffix, you are told there are three such packages.
    The gimp package should be renamed gimp2, so as not to automatically upgrade and kill old workflows. Instead, GIMP itself would inform users that version 3.0 has been released, ideally quickly linking to be able to install it. Upon first launch, GIMP 3 notices the lack of gimp3 user configs and creates them from the gimp2 config (or uses defaults for what doesn't exist). On subsequent launches, if the gimp3 config exists, it just uses that.
    Oh, and if python2 is only by gimp2, put it in the gimp2 package.
    Later on, you can kill gimp2, but not remotely right away.

    Back in the late 90s and early 2000s we had Powermacs and Sun Servers as a backend for preprint and print (no, I'm not talking about your inkjet printer, I'm talking about offset presses and the early stages of digital offset. Google HP Indigo). Then Sun was no more and we used Apple Xservers until those where no more,
    For some 20 years we are at 10 bit per pixel Adobe, HKS, Pantone certified CMYK colors and GIMP will never be able to do this. Still Macs as a frontend but now with Windows Servers as a backend.
