  • Speed limits spark debate all over the United States. Do lower speed limits make for safer drivers? Does faster drivers mean more accidents? Or do lower limits save lives? We go back to the first speeding ticket ever written and trace the evolution of speed limits to how they’re instituted today.
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

Theres a flip side to that also. I was steadily passing cars in the overtaking lane (in the UK) and there was maybe a 5 to 6 car length gap between each car, so I was in the overtaking lane for quite some time. However I was using the lane the way it was intended, I was doing the 75mph speed limit while everyone else did 55-60mph. Then a guy in a Kia SUV come up behind me, rid my ass harder than a prison inmate and started flashing his lights trying to get me to move. No. Fuck you, I'm using the lane the way it's supposed to be used, there's not enough of a gap for me to pull over so I'm not going to take orders just because you want to drive 30 over with your family on board.

There are some roads in California, specifically highways, where having a speed limit makes no sense. I went on a trip to Mammoth mountain last year and we drove on Highways 58, 14, and 395. all three of those highways had virtually no corners and had nearly nobody on them. The flow of traffic on the 14 and 395 (what little of it there was) was 115 mph. No problems, no police, barely any other cars. Just open road and arbitrary signs that said the limit was 70. Its highways like those, out in the middle of nowhere with long straights and no traffic, that shouldn't have a limit.

You forgot to mention a few key facts about the autobahn:
    1) only certain sections are unrestricted, between major cities where you’re less likely to encounter on/off ramps
    2) the cars are designed for it, and vehicle licensing is closely scrutinized to ensure only vehicles that should be on the road are allowed (btw, that level of gov’t oversight costs real money)
    3) commercial vehicles have placards posted on their backend indicating the top speed that they’re legal to drive, and they do NOT drive in the left lane
    4) unrestricted sections of the autobahn itself are designed such that insane speeds are safe - sweeping curves with gentle banking, deep and resilient road-bases (they last MUCH longer, but cost a boat load - we can’t even keep our current infrastructure up to par, let alone generate the political will to raise taxes for autobahn-depth road bases), expansive visibility, etc
    5) the autobahn is kept meticulously clean with massive street sweeper vacuum trucks to minimize the chances that road debris will cause a crash at unrestricted speeds (again, expensive!)
    6) German driving culture - Automated road signs will warn drivers of an upcoming traffic jam “Stau!” and drivers in all lanes will turn on their hazards (go figure!) to warn drivers behind them as they slow down (because as we all know, brakes lights don’t indicate how hard you’re hitting the pedal or that you’re not going to let up soon, because there’s a “stau” just over the hill that you can’t see yet). Also, related to their driving culture, when in Germany and especially on the autobahn, you don’t eat or drink ANYTHING while driving. The culturally acceptable way to satisfy your hunger or quench your thirst when road-tripping, is to take care of it at the service station. They almost all have small high-top tables inside the convenience store or on the patio between it and the fuel pumps, where you can enjoy your beverage and snack before getting behind the wheel again.
For all these reasons and more, unrestricted speeds make sense on the autobahn and comparing them to American interstates only exposes your ignorance.
    And NOW you know!

EU drivers are not perfect, some places are crazy but I’ve never seen that level of blissful ignorance. By the time theyre legally able to drink, they will have years of experience behind them. In most parts of the EU, its 18 and 18. As in 18 to get a driver's license, and 18 to start drinking. What a great combination that is, being an inexperienced driver at 18 and already being allowed to drink right away.
But I digress, I'd much rather have the American way of doing things, its just more logical.

As long as everything is going appropriately, speed isn't an issue. If you're doing 100mph down a city street it really only becomes dangerous if something unexpected happens or there's a mechanical failure.
The point of driving more slowly is that if something unexpected does happen, you've got more time to react and less momentum/ energy to dissipate.
As noted in the video, people tend to base their speed on a given stretch of road based on their sense of safety. Having landmarks closer to the road increases the sense of speed and will tend to lead to drivers driving more slowly.
And most states have a rule that the listed speed limit is the maximum limit on the road, so if conditions change, you may get a ticket even if you're going the limit.

Stay in the middle lane. If someone is behind you and they put their left blinker on, just move over. The culture of driving is SO much better.
The backroads through, there are essentially no speed limits and passing happens everywhere. I remember passing people on Amalfi drive which was one of the best roads i've ever driven. But there are scooters and motos everywhere so you need to be mindful. Loved it. Just watch out when driving in cities. There are areas where if you drive through it you'll be automatically ticketed if you drive down during a certain time. So you'll need the hotel to call and have them kill the ticket. That part was really annoying.

Farthest to the right is the slowest to allow for people getting on and off the highway, and passing is always done to the left. On a three lane highway, you can drive in the middle going the speed of traffic, stay to the right if you're going slow, pass on the left if you're going faster (and then get back in the middle lane once you've passed who you're passing and it's clear to do so ).
Nobody should be in the far left lane unless they're actively passing someone to the right of them within a mile's distance of travel.

But there will be a sports car or three that will blow my doors off...on the open I interstate at 70 mph I was slower then most traffic. The fastest cars only 20mph faster. In autobahn the fastest was 40 mph faster. (Interstate, in the 90s. Autobahn, in the 100s)

I think that your experience also has a lot to do with the place you were driving. I've driven a dozen of times in Germany for only about 10,000km total. So, I'm not that experienced, but what I've noticed is that the removal of the speed limited gives drivers more responsibility to determine a safe speed and almost everyone seems to take that responsibility well. Therefore around cities and on more congested roads traffic usually driver between 100km/h (65mph) and 130km/h (80mph), if that's not already the speed limit in those areas. However on the quieter roads traffic flows are often faster. Most traffic then drives about 130km/h (80mph) to 150km/h (95mph) and while I often drive about 170km/h (105 mph) to 200km/h (125mph) I feel that although I often overtake other cars there are still regularly cars overtaking me. And what I noticed is that due to the lack of speed limits I take a more responsible approach on determining a safe speed and at the same time also can keep more focused on the road as I don't have to watch my speed-o-meter for possible speeding.
And most modern cars, even with small engines, can manage 160km/h (100mph). I've done that speed consistently with several 1.0l engined cars.

The 85th percentile method is flawed for one simple reason - it's rarely measured on a road that doesn't already have a speed limit in force.
As a result, many people won't drive to a speed they think is safe, but will simply drive slower in order to obey the speed limit in force (perhaps out of fear of prosecution) and so you'll end up with an estimate of the 85th percentile that is too low.

It's not the mistakes we make while driving (we can assume drivers crashing their cars is a statistical certainty) but rather wheat happens after you've done your mistake. Would you rather roll you car as 65 mph or at 85 mph? The 85 mph crash has about double the energy, hence double the injury and damage. Just a 5% increase in highway speed results in a 30% increase of deaths.
Then there is city speed limits. Almost every pedestrian survives when hit by a 20mph driver, but only 1 in 10 survive if hit by a 35mph driver.
Higher speed limits doesn't work to stop people crashing, it just works to mitigate the damage high speeds cause. US drivers kill about 40,000 people per year, and no one has ever been killed by being bumped by a shopping cart.

Can't raise speed limits unless you raise the requirements for driving licenses.
In the US, most states at least, you walk in and get a free license pretty much.
In Germany you have to take a ton of classes, practice and theory, and the total cost adds up to about $2k. If you don't pass it, you have to pay most of it all over again. Guess what that means? It means that people give a shit because if they don't pass they burn money and time.
And this applies to most of Europe, some countries are worse, others are a bit less strict (I live in italy and the cost of a driving license is equivalent to about $1k, again, if you don't pass it you have to take classes and pay the test again.)
edit: and let's not even mention the fines... I saw a superspeeders video where mr. Spaghetti was whining about an $3k fine in Switzerland "for an u-turn" - those people did a u-turn IN A TUNNEL on a highway (or at least 90kmh limit road) CROSSING DOUBLE WHITE and he bitches for 3k fines? What the fuck? It's good enough they didn't get their licence revoked and cars impounded on the spot. You want these people to be on limit less roads? Fuck no you don't.
The US has some of the worst drivers in the world, you can't raise the speed limits or remove them with such a high number of idiots on the road.

I remember i had one lesson late in the evening where i had to go up to 160 kmh one single time, that was it. After recieving my licence my dad sat me in his Merc E350 d and told me to go flat out, i hit 255 kmh. That certainly was diffenrent to the 160 kmh in that driving-school-VW-Golf. After more hours on the Autobahn i started to understand what it means to have no speed limit. When you are the one going fast, pay all attention and look further ahead. If you are the slow one with other fast drivers on the road, fucking use your mirrors and respect fast drivers. I don't know how many times i had to brake hard because some ignorant dumbfuck just pulled onto the left lane, even though he could easily have waited to let me pass. @@vilkku792 I never cruise cruise control in my vehicle. Speed management keeps my mind focused on the road. I make quite a few 6-12 hour round trips throughout the year, and just steering gets way too boring too quickly. I also come from an area with some of the worst road conditions in the US, so speed management is a skill you have to hone in this area. Not as in "stay at 25 miles per hour cuz the sign says so" but like "here is an extremely sharp, blind turn on a cliff side with no guard rail, so take it at 15mph or you might die" where as after that may be a relatively smooth straight stretch that you can easily hit 60 on with no issue. Maybe it's just natural selection, but people where I'm from tend to be better at measuring the safety of their speed for the road their on. It makes a one size fits all speed limit ridiculous to me. Some people are just able to drive just as safely at higher speeds than others.

@@TheAwesomes2104 I agree with the OP's statement, and yours also. I find I focus more when driving faster on the motorway, and when not using cruise control. I actually don't like cruise control after actually using it, as I find it makes me zone out as I don't have to manage my foot work to keep my speed. Also you lose the ability to release the accelerator to slow down without braking, and if it's not adaptive you have to change the speed or turn it off (either by braking or the switch) when you catch up to the slow and inattentive driver that won't move over. I use the speed limiter function more, as it stops me from speeding but allows me full control of the vehicle. But I try to avoid using it as well.
I learned the hard way about reducing speed at corners and not just doing the speed limit. I once almost span out in a Honda Accord because I thought I could keep up with another car on a sharp bend. However, driving a CLK 320 later, I realized some cars are better at high speed cornering than others, and rear wheel drive ones are generally better than front wheel drive, for cornering speed. But you also have the risk of unintentional oversteer (drifting). Intentional drifting is fun though, but best avoided on public roads.

    • @terminhaider9695

After getting some years of experience driving, I also have straight up turned off cruise control in my car. (tbh I hardly used it to begin with and would be even less likely to use it in a manual car). I find it better to have constant access to direct and instant control on how much throttle I use to drive at highway speeds... considering I go into the passing lane a little often to overtake slower drivers and semis.
Another thing is that I've seen and moreso hear of people using their damn cell phones on the highway like wtf. People who know me tend to think I'm the reckless driver always averaging more than the speed limit- yet I've never been the one to get into an accident because when I drive, I drive and focus only on that. I vehemently argue that speed limits in most places should be a little higher. People would be less likely to use their phones while driving.

Germany has it not right. Its not really safe driving on German Autobahn. Most people drive around 80 mph. Lorries and semitrailers are allowed to drive only 55 mph. Then there are speed limit free Autobahn segments like the Freiburg to Karlsruhe, which I drive on daily base, where lots of people drive their rep station wagons and SUV's up to 124 mph. The speed differenced are too big which makes it a dangerous place to speed up.
Saw a lot of accidents in 2 years. Lots of traffic jams because of them.
Mostly Swiss people are totally nuts and speed a lot until they tailgate very close to the slower car.
Its a myth, German Autobahns are safe. I'm for a speed limit of 80 mph (130 kph), would be a lot less stress on the streets.

In the really rural west areas they’re usually 65-70 (or 75 in states like Texas and Nevada). However, I do know that states like Arizona (which I’ve only been there once like 10 years ago FYI, I just know from internet) have 65 on 2 lane roads and I do think it should probably be higher there.

i did a 2k word research paper in college about why speed limits are irrelevant. there are 2 main factors as to why they are. 1: no one drives the speed limit, i've been on the road countless times when the limit is 55 and everyone's going 80, I've even see the average speed of traffic be around 90. this implies that the word "speed limit" is clearly only about a legal limit not anywhere close to actual limit any can physically drive their car. if everyone is driving 90mph and thats what they feel comfortable doing then they can totally drive faster if they needed to. 2: the solomon speed curve. this is a curve showing the amount of accidents relative to the average speed of traffic. the least amount of accidents occur 10 mph over the average speed of traffic. so if the average speed of traffic is 90 mph then the safest speed to travel would be 100, but its not that big of a difference. and at that point you would be going 45mph over the limit. according to the graph the same number of accidents occur at the average speed of traffic as they do going 20 mph over the average speed. which would be 110 which is twice the speed limit. speed limits are dumb and only a way for cops to bring in money. if the majority of the population is more worried about being caught speeding than by any safety risks of actually speeding it shows how irrelevant speed limits actually are

Yes, if no one drives the speed limit, then they are irrelevant. But here in Finland pretty much everybody drives the speed limit because we have automatic speed cameras on many highways. I think it's a good thing that there's some kind of a rule on how fast you are allowed to drive. When everybody is driving approximately the same speed, it leads to smoother traffic and all in all safer driving.
I don't think the problem is with speed limits existing, it's with people not respecting the speed limits/the speed limits being set too low.
_"the least amount of accidents occur 10 mph over the average speed of traffic"_
This doesn't sound convincing to me. If you are driving faster than most of the traffic, you will have to worry about overtaking all the time. Well, maybe that keeps you more focused on driving... Depending on the road, overtaking can be dangerous. Sure, if it's a wide road with many lanes and the lanes going to the opposite directions are separated, then it's not a problem (though some idiots who don't pay attention may still make it more dangerous than just following the speed limit). But if you have only one lane and the lanes going to the opposite directions are not separated from each other, overtaking is definitely more risky than just following the speed limit.
BTW, I just checked out the Solomon curve, and you are incorrect. The curve says that the safest speed is 0-10 mph above the average speed of the traffic (not that 10 mph above the average speed is safer than the average speed). Also, I'm not sure how reliable that curve is. It's based on pretty old research (from the 1950s) and there have been more studies conducted since. According to Wikipedia "Subsequent research suggests significant biases in the Solomon study, which may cast doubt on its findings." For example this study casr.adelaide.edu.au/ruralspeed/RURALSPEED.PDF says that driving even 10 km/h faster is twice as risky than driving the average speed.

I moved over to let him pass me and he then stayed in front of me, would speed up to way over 200mph just to slow down again to let me catch up again. He did that a few times, the fastest I could go with a bit of downhill (tuned RS6) was about 194mph. It was fun to have him there and going back and forth for a while, especially since both of us were abiding by the rules and not getting into other lanes with other cars, endangering them.

If you know your car (or motorbike in your case) then you should feel the need to drive how you feel safe.
90-100mph isn't an issue at all on the motorway, especially if there isn't much traffic and visibility is clear.
The problem I've seen with people is they don't know how to drive safety which includes getting speed blind so you'd speed/creep up to the car in fronts bumper then change lane the very last second where you either perform an F1 manoeuvre or slam your brakes and gasp for air like you've seen a hairpin corner travelling way too fast in a very foggy road.
If people knew to look far ahead and change lanes maybe 5-7 car lengths before they actually do, we would have a much lower accident rate and much more efficient motorway.
