Look at this beautiful axe! With the heavy blade, that eye catching shoulder, that nice swing in the handle. this is a pice of art, that wants to be swung! And so you do buckin.... another day, another expirience. Mr. billy ray, i learn everyday something from you. thank you for this. Greetings to all buckin army members. Love wins, stay kind togther.
From about 12 years old I split firewood for my grandparents with my grandfather's axe, a '62 4lb Welsh pattern Elwell like this, on a 28" handle. I have that axe now and it is one of my treasured possessions and a memory of my childhood. I take it out to split now and then. Happy days. I can only imagine how much effort goes into chucking 7lb about. They are not really natural splitters so getting results needs a bit of forethought to make each swing count.
Those Elwell welsh pattern were used mainly for "rounding" big trees before felling with a cross cut. They are a good felling axe although the 7lb is a trifle heavy ,but the 5 and 6 pound are more manageable. My grandfather who was no more than a rasher of wind would swing them all day.

An old time carpenter rehandled a hammer for me once and the last thing he did was to drill a 1/4" dole in the butt end of the handle and fill it almost to the top with linseed oil and then glued in a 1/4" dowel about 3/4" long. This will keep your handle from drying out in the future. The handle he did for me is close to 40 years in the hammer so far and still going strong.

I really enjoy watching you split fire wood. What makes it even better is knowing with 100% confidence that you could easily outrun someone with a hydraulic log splitter. Peace
Great to see the Elwell 7lb'er getting air time. Long time since I had one of those in my hands. Used it splitting big Elms killed with Dutch elm disease back North England in the 80's. Great memories, thanks Buckin'
There is a whole lot of love from this. Billy Ray your are a special breed of a man. Love everything you do and say on here. Like to have some of them pickle cucumbers too bet the make jack rabbit fight 2 bears and come back for a 3 bear if he wants a piece of the jack rabbit. Have a great day be safe.
Finished an axe this weekend. Thanks for all your videos. They have been very helpful. Now I have the best axe I've ever used and enjoy it to no end. But now I need another. God bless, Brother.
It just goes t' show ya that silliness and fun has an important role in the grand scheme of things. And the yard of chopped wood is a beautiful display of color. I'm appreciative of the grains of each handle on those axes. And the metal that they're attached to. The details of the edge, never realized how much I didn't know. But i do know that i will be more kind today than yesterday. And will search out a jar of homemade pickles.
Absolutely love your CZcams channel. Love your axe and would love to build one! Watched a video of your on how to sharpen a chain on a saw and was awesomely surprised on how much better it cut. I will sharpen them this way from now on. Keep up the great videos and can't wait for the next one!
Hey Buckin', After watching you eat that garlic, I'm glad there is no such thing as smell-o-vision. . . . LOL. Love ya brother & blessings to the True Blues, All the Soldiers Of Kindness and all the new comers too.
Buckin that Elwell looks massive even from a distance😂 the head is almost as long as the pieces of wood😳 those pickles look fantastic! Love to you and the family❤️
Been digging and searching your great vids to find and sample just the right axe hits that are closest matches to an old Yamaha snare I want on my next cd--though I'm a singer and guitarist-- I think I found them here with the Elwell! And all those those fast AND slow falling giant tree groans make superb percussion transitions... and ALL the McCulloch idles make fabulous rhythm gurgles... You're a dynamite drummer. Your sense of rhythm and nuance is totally righteous. You could make just for kicks and giggles(have you already??) a great sampled comp from all the sounds your saws, axes, and fallings you create.... Just sayin'. Love ya down here in Santa Barbara. Have been a tree man myself. Got two big California Oaks that have to come down soon. Mac 10-10. Addicted to your channel~ btw: would never officially record your sounds without asking you first...
I am SHOCKED! I know this may seem weird, but the proof is in the video! Buckin is not a kindness MACHINE, he's actually human! I've never seen him eat in any of his videos! Here I thought he just ran off of kindness and love that he emits and receives from all of us! HAHAHA! Love ya brother! Take care!
I've got a beautiful Ewell 7lb axe, it belonged to the gamekeeper from the local estate from a time before power saws, even has the original handle with the gamekeepers name branded into it, sharp as a razor and just as buckin' did, you let it fall under its own weight and it splits like butter!
Friends, That axe is so big I believe the Buckin Editor is using CG. Those pickles take me back to when I was 6 years old. Right handed and left eye dominant, I ate pickles to become eye ambidextrous. I am sure that I made the same faces as Mr. Smith Haha Thank You
@Buckin' Billy Ray Smith - each and every time I watched you work in the Bunker, that Elwell caught my eye and I wanted to see it in action. I'm delighted to see it being used. (I missed one of these at a local auction before Covid19 kicked in...)
My Grandfather worked in the factory making tools for Elwells. They made fine tools and always treated their workers exceptionally well.

There used to be so many good axe makers in England. Sadly they've all gone. Keep hold of any that come your way because the steel is remarkable.
I had to watch this one that axe just falls through the wood seems effortless 👍
